Hello, I am from India. And generally we indians don't use a specific word for hello. You would be suprised but most people do use the word as it is in English. We generally use mixing of english and hindi a lot so much so that most people may find it hard to converse in pure Hindi. Though to greet someone elder we generally say "Namaste" and it is generally said to elder relatives as a token of respect. Also India is very diverse and have a lot of languages. So Hindi is understood by only half or even less of the population. English serves as the language bridge for North and south states. There are 22 officially recognised languages that are used for respective states ranging from Hindi , Urdu , Tamil , Punjabi , Bengali , Gujrati, Assamese , Telugu , Kannada , Nepali , Sindhi , Konkani , Malyali , Marathi , Kashmiri , Sanskrit , Bodo , Santhali , Dogri , Maithili and Manipuri.
