The most remote island on earth is looking for employees

Tristan da Cunha is situated midway between South Africa and South America and is looking for farmers- well an agricultural advisor to be specific. Report by Sarah Duffy.

    I visited Gough Island and Tristan da Cunha in April 2011. I explored Tristan da Cunha and nearby islands. There was a shipwreck with debris nearby the island a few months earlier. The islanders were respectful and cordially. The island has a rugged volcanic landscape and cool temperature year-round. Their food growth is potatoes, lobsters, fishes, and few winterized vegetables from their greenhouses. Everything is imported to the island. They are dependent on tourism and exporting precious lobsters for the island's revenues. There is no first-class hospital on the island. If you are sick or critically ill, it will be your painful nightmare. The last time the volcano erupted in 1961 when the island's inhabitants were forced to evacuate. When the volcano subsided, the inhabitants returned to the island. In the future, the volcano will erupt again. You will not like to live there forever, but only a few months or a year. It is not like the dream of Gilligan's island of the castaway living. Sorry, so many people like you are searching for sanctuary or solitude. There is no place on Earth nowadays because a growing number of people are spreading like a flea.

    Right. Like being a farmer is a dream job, right? Breaking your back, literally, every day. Peaceful life? As the one foreigner on the island? More like you're going to constantly be checking the words you say and your behaviour in general. It will be easy to rub people the wrong way, and you don't want to be doing that on an isolate island. No stupid people? What makes you think that? You seriously think they're all smart there? How many of them do you think go to university? What do you think the state of education in general is? Anyway, you're obviously not going there. You're just imagining something that isn't real.

    BayviewFinch what a friendly comment, it almost seems like your angry 😂 I would love to be a farmer if industrial farming hadn't taken over. I mean stupid people like you causing drama, taking my words literally, toxic, as if I was 100% serious about this plan.. maybe that island is full of those people too, who knows. good thing I'm not on a boat sailing there right now...

  • @BayviewFinch

    @BayviewFinch

    7 жыл бұрын

    Joe H. Whatever. LOL. Who said I'm angry? I'm just pointing out some basics. It's always people like you complaining about life as it is with these rose-tinted glasses looking at some other situation like it's all great. Give me a break. If you could talk to any of your ancestors who were pre-industrial farmers, I'm sure you would quickly learn that it's not easy. Why do you think all of those people left for the Americas when they had the chance? Why do you think farmers anywhere on the planet leave their farms? Obviously I know you're not 100% serious, yet you're the one calling ME stupid? LOL. If you were serious, you wouldn't entertain thoughts of going there, because you'd actually realize life wouldn't be any better there. Just the fact that they're looking for people to farm tells you something.

    Beautiful place amazing views. Should open up a guess house or B&B. The soil must be very rich you could grow more then potatoes there. They do organic farming, produce imported salts getting someone that is not a farmer per say but knows other ways of cultivating would be of great value to this community.

    Well, I'm no farming expert, but if they're only growing potatoes, it must have something to do with the climate! I didn't see any satellite dishes in view, and how come there's no landing strip? Still, it seems like it could be a great one or two year gig for either someone just out of university, or somebody close to retirement age!

    Calling it a volcanic island is an understatement. Last eruption 50 years ago. Even a bad storm could be a nightmare. It would make an ideal retirement community, if they have a doctor. The residents could never escape. How about a prison colony? I bet a bar would do good there.

    Wow only meat and potatoes? They could do better than that, growing for that amount of people would be easy. I used to grow a full acre(by myself) of all sorts of foods that fed at least 10 households year around. I planted,made and added compost, weeded plus watered. My neighbors if they weeded the row they picked from it was free, if they didn't weed, it was $1 a pound for everything including flowers. I also had an herbal garden, that I grew along with asparagus and artichokes. I mean this stuff isn't hard to do, they don't need a big crop farmer, they need several small specialty farms. They need to import small farmers to grow seasonal foods. You can feed a lot of people a wide variety this with small farms. Start a co-op, produce honey, cheeses, soaps...you name it. There some good advantages to being isolated from distant trade, for one knowing how your food is grown is a big advantage to your health.
