Growing up in Calgary was good. I like where I live now though in the capital of British Columbia, Victoria. It’s a ferry ride over to the big city (Vancouver) but there’s plenty here too. (400k population roughly in greater Victoria) Calgary still really benefits from affordability where as Victoria, Vancouver and Toronto are the three most expensive cities to live in Canada.

I live in Brisbane, Australia and I personally feel that it is one of the most liveable cities and very peaceful with a low population but still has all the big city amenities. Probably what Sydney/Melbourne used to be 20 years or so ago. Its all about the branding on a global scale - that Sydney and Melbourne are the best cities in Australia so they're growing rapidly at 100k+ people added per year and that is contributing to rising house prices. Brisbane is relatively more affordable on that front and does have exciting places such as the Goldcoast and the Sunshine Coast on its doorstep. Not to mention the fantastic all-year round sunny weather. It is only lacking in public transport and infrastructure and a bit of entertainment/culture but that is soon to change in the lead up to the 2032 Olympics with Queens Wharf, Brisbane Metro, Waterfront Brisbane and Cross River Rail.

Toronto is only liveable if you have have generational wealth to rely on or if you bought property 5+ years ago. If you're among those poor sods unlucky enough to be born after 1985 or so then Toronto is just plain awful to live in, if you can even call the meaningless existence you'll experience "living." I mean, I guess if having a whole generation of 20 and 30-something-year-olds living paycheck to paycheck with roommates is your idea of "living," then all power to you. In my experience, however, the income to cost of living ratio is so off it'll make your head spin. I lived in Toronto for my entire life, including 10 years building my career after finishing up my degree. I finally left that hamster wheel of a city, and Canada outright, in April. I couldn't be happier living in Europe now. Canada betrayed its young people big time and I would never willingly move back.

Personally, I have a better life here because I lived abroad, brought my skillset here and am also ethnically Polish while also knowing the language. As someone fluent in English, you'd do well in Poland, especially if you brought a remote job from the Netherlands with you as the Euro goes very far locally in terms of purchasing power. However, it's a question of "What are you willing to abandon just to own a home?" Outside of a few major cities, Poland would be a brand new culture to most people, so one's happiness really depends on their circumstances.

I disagree. I was born & raised in Toronto during the 90s, my parents are refugees and came into this country with nothing. Services from the Public Library, and Toronto Community Housing helped me succeed in school, while Employment Ontario & OSAP gave me the opportunity to work and go to university. The quality of life that I had growing up poor was far better than what my family members had to endure in Australia, the U.S and the U.K. You are absolutely right though, young Canadians are getting robbed because of our speculative housing market. Absolutely ridiculous. It's the main reason why I'm living with my parents (saving money for a down payment). It's so sad to see the soul of a city that I love being sucked dry because of gentrification. I'm sorta optimistic now that interest rates are rising and the political will to rezone our neighborhoods, but right now is quite painful. Glad you're doing well in Poland, and that you're happy. I wish you the best :), cheers!

Don’t confuse “Liveable City” with “Cool City” This list is so subjective. Living in Frankfurt may be comfortable, but it’s just comfortably lame. A nightmare if you ask me. A city is enjoyed based off the energy it give out. Hence places like Mexico City, Bangkok, Nairobi, New York, Montreal, Hong Kong, Johannesburg, Medellin, Chicago, Mumbai and Shanghai are awesome! And none of them are perfect. They are thriving and vibrant, much more than Vienna, Zurich and Copenhagen.

I genuinely don't get how Toronto keeps appearing on these lists. I lived there for a year and couldn't get out quickly enough. It's unbelievably expensive for a city with no soul. The suburban sprawl is horrible, the public transit is just as bad, there's very little decent bike infrastructure and drivers are extremely hostile toward cyclists. This coming from someone who lived and worked in a Chinese megacity as well. Sure, getting around in a Chinese city can be chaotic, but at least nobody's angrily trying to run you off the road for just trying to get somewhere. Everyone's stressed and angry all the time, and I get it, knowing that my coworkers who spent an hour or more in traffic each way on their daily commute weren't in the minority. I never thought I'd be so lonely in the biggest city in Canada, but the people were largely cold and anti-social, which is the opposite of what I've found in other big North American cities like Montreal (where I currently live), Chicago and NYC. I don't know what metrics are used to determine that Toronto is liveable, but in my experience, it's a miserable place to be a human being.

These rankings are pretty wack to be honest.. Like i can understand Auckland dropping from top place, which was just a speculative ranking in the first place, & out of the top 10. But a knee jerk down to 34 because it had 3 separated snap lockdowns? But Melbourne, (& i love Melbourne i used to live there) kept 10th place despite having the worlds longest continuous lockdown & multiple major protests?. While Brisbane dropped out of the top 10, despite being barely locked down at all, relative to Melbourne & Sydney. And then Perth dropped too, despite it not even having any lock downs at all? While WA was cut off from the rest of Australia for a long time, through that entire time they had nightclubs open & no restrictions, plus a pumping mining office sector. It was life as normal, just with restrictions to enter. While the rest of Australia had various lockdowns. I would have expected Melbourne to drop out of the top 10, potentially even to the 20s, & Perth be the highest ranked Australian city, potentially no 10, & Brisbane be in the top 20 easily..

I think the one city that shouldn't be on this list is Calgary. It's definitely highly developed and great to live, but the long and brutal winters would make living there hard in the long-term. Vancouver is expensive, but the winters (while wet) are quite mild in comparison.

I've lived in both cities calgary and Vancouver and both cities have their beauty's. Vancouver is just so god damn expensive. The gas, hydro, insurance rates, property taxes etc we are talking about everythingggg. Calgary ya sure if can have Cold spells but they don't last wrong and we get warm Chinook winds that can melt all the snow in a few days during the middle of winter. Calgary for the win
