Speaking of non-red tomatoes still seeming exotic to some people: I gave a friend a few of my surplus "Cherokee Green" tomatoes that are green when ripe. It wasn't easy to convince him and his wife that they shouldn't be fried.

I have found that the trick to getting the best flavor from the purple cherry tomatoes is to let them get really, really ripe. When you think they're ready, wait some more. The skin starts out kinda brownish, but wait until its dark. It'll look almost like a muscadine.

That’s what is nice about you. You are about 6 weeks ahead of us. I have 14 varieties in, Hosinator, Red Snapper and Roadster. My recommended one in Michigan is Mortgage Lifter. Otherwise Brandywine and Madame Marmade is the ultimate. We may not have a wet a season as the last 2 years which blighted out everything. Pickles are my 2nd love. 3rd, Easy fun to grow onions. 4rd is Okra., peppers of some fermenting variety. And sunflowers. And my watermelons at the stores have been delicious!

Mortgage Lifter! I grow them in Georgia zone 7b. They have to be babied here with frequent spraying of copper but those things taste better than any other heirloom tomatoes I have ever grown. Fruit set when it's very hot is sporadic but when the weather cools a bit they get right back to it.

Jeff from East Tennessee. I am going a ton of tomato plants this year. I am trying to get tomatoes all the way to the end of summer. I planted a ton of red snappers. I have most plants loaded getting ready to turn. But I have a more red snappers just little more than a foot tall. It’s been a hot summer for East Tennessee so far. Most days in the 90’s. Just had 95 the other day! And it’s been bone dry. The other tomatoes I am going is a small row of beef stakes, lemon boy, brandywine, and a yellow Dr. wyches. Everything is loaded up.

I grow Kellogg every year for a great yellow tomato flavor. I grew Wyche this year for the first time. Very similar flavor to Kellogg. I will definitely order Turkey Creek when seeds are available. I grew Cherokee Carbon a few years ago. I like Cherokee Purple better but it has ultra thin skin and is susceptible to disease. The Cherokee Carbon survived until frost. Most of the recently introduced heirloom crosses turn out to be duds in my experience but the Cherokee Carbon is an exception. It's hard to believe it's vigorous down there. It will likely set more fruit if you can keep it alive until the temps moderate some.

Hi Lazy Dog Fam! I also grew BHN 871 this year, though I grew around 100 plants. I was impressed by the fruit size and taste, but the yield and days to maturity were not worth it from a commercial standpoint. If I were a home gardener, BHN 871 would definitely be my go to for a yellow determinate. I think they taste better than the standard yellow determinate called Carolina Gold, though Carolina Gold is considerably quicker in my opinion. Travis, i'm in zone 8b and I have grown Cherokee Carbon. There are a few other indeterminate tomatoes that perform really well for me down here, to where I actually grow them commercially. Try out Lemon Boy and Hot Streak from Johnny's, they both perform as well as Cherokee Carbon in zone 8b. I promise you those two varieties will not let you down. Another good indeterminate for the south are those Berkley Tye Dye tomatoes. They have horrible shelf-life though. Try Hot Streak if you chose one! You will not be disappointed. They are as good tasting as they are pretty. They fly off the farm stand. The picture Johnny's has for that fruit does not do it justice. It is an iridescent red when ripe, at least when grown in the southern sun.

Used to do this in Arkansas between 60" rows of sorghum or tall corn for early shady cool spot then cut the sorghum and they would stay pretty healthy. You could maybe take a cutting from the turkey creek and still try it out.
