I had a chance to have a brief conversation with Max last year. He’s one of the most genuine and authentic people I’ve met. I admire the way he pushes boundaries in watchmaking but arguably more importantly I admire how he does business with integrity and true character

I couldn’t agree more. The entire company has such a positive and dynamic personality that is contagious when you interact with them. Despite their lower production numbers, I believe it is one of the most important brands in the industry as it continues to push us forward and I admire Max’s refreshing philosophy.

I mean he has chosen to make jewellery for the super rich, people who have so much excess wealth they can afford to blow 10 years average salary on an ostentatious display of that wealth. True art can be enjoyed by, and move, the masses, he makes possessions/trinkets. Sure it’s fun and cool but he has personally profited greatly and has not really used his obvious talents to help humanity. Does that make him a wonderful guy? Good for him for being successful and he is best placed to choose how he lives his life but to my eyes I don’t see these choices as admirable at all, quite the opposite: it seems self indulgent. If he was taking on the corporate giants and pouring his heart and soul into $1500 watches that like-minded enthusiasts could realistically save up for and buy then pass on to their children then i’d be more impressed. I’d be curious to know how much of the profit from these eye-wateringly expensive watches goes to him compared to his employees, he seems pleasant and polite but that info would give a much better idea of whether he is a wonderful man full of kindness and integrity or is this just marketing to justify the outrageous prices (or maybe you could ask how much tax he pays: is he paying his fair share or does he have offshore accounts in tax havens?) Edit: Quick google search tells me the guy lives in Dubai. I’m sure his gaudy watches impress the high class escorts (an oxymoron lol) over there almost as much as a Lambo.

  • @DanielTseng100

    2 ай бұрын

@@ArthurvanH0udt Jacob&Co is difficult to compare tbh. (I'm not a hater of the brand, first of all, just in case I sound like one, in fact I love it) but despite them being absolutely incredible technical marvels, I feel like they aren't on the same game as MB&F. Their watches are more of a status symbol, a flashy complex art piece to show wealth, sometimes covered in diamonds or doing collabs with other brands or themes that aren't horological, elements that don't add to the functional complexity of the watch. Many of their watches are aimed at very wealthy people that want to show off, proof of that is watches like the Bugatti, Oil Pump, Casino, LaFerrari, Mystery, Godfather... MB&F resonates more with people that is crazy about watches in the technical aspect. Their mechanisms and the engineering behind them. There's no iced out versions or excessive flashiness with superfluous stuff that doesn't add anything to the functionality of the watch. Sure, having a Bugatti W16 in your watch is cool and again, I love to see it and it amazes me that they achieved such a crazy complication, but what purpose does it serve, apart from looking really cool? It won't help you tell the time better, or more accurately, and last time I checked, an engine obviously isn't a watch part, so it's like it doesn't belong there despite both being mechanical marvels. MB&F is more of a "Here I have a watch, I'm going to make it 'watcher' and push its complexity without adding too much useless stuff to it" So IMHO, Jacob&Co is more of a Bugatti, Ferrari, Lykan kind of watch, a mix of crazy high luxury and technicality and MB&F is more of a Koenigsegg, Gordon Murray, Mclaren kind of watch, more focused on the technical aspect, but not leaving behind the good looks and luxury either, just keeping them in the right spot without going crazy ;)

A good story always has people in it. Behind every watch there are people. The greatest watches are great because of their story. The story of people who created them and those who wore them. This hobby is as much about people as it is about watches.

I love these videos that go in depth with the watchmaker and its brand. It's incredible what they do and the time it takes to design and create these masterpieces. I wish and hope you can get together with Felipe Pikullik which I believe he is also one of the greatest watch makers of our time as he is just getting started.
