The Most Interesting BAD SEASON of Dale Jr.’s Career

Спорт

The 2007 NASCAR season is remembered for many things in the 15 year hindsight that we possess today. One of the major themes is that it was the end of many eras to end in this time was that of Dale Earnhardt, Jr. at Dale Earnhardt Incorporated in the red #8 Budweiser Chevrolet. With family turmoil, on track struggles, free agency moves, and racing to get into the coveted 12 man Chase for the Nextel Cup his 2007 season was one for the storybooks as there was not a dull moment throughout the campaign for NASCAR’s Most Popular Driver. This is the most interesting bad season of Dale Jr.’s career.

DEI was supposed to be a dream come true family venture for the entire Earnhardt family. Teresa drove DEI into the ground and basically crushed her own husband’s dream. Dale Jr left DEI because he could no longer put up with Teresa’s disastrous management of the business his father founded. 2007 was when Dale Jr’s frustration finally reached the boiling point.

Dale Jr.‘s 2007 season is nearly identical to Michael Waltrip’s 2005 season, performance wise. Both ran well enough in the first 26 races to make The Chase each of those years, but had horrific luck that cost both of them wins & Chase berths in those seasons. Very ironic that two of DEI’s biggest faces had horrific ends to their DEI tenure.

I always remembered this season when I was younger and was always left in disappointment because he would have an engine failure or some type of mechanical failure. It’s not like these failures happened when he was mired in the back but when he was running top 5 so that made it much more heartbreaking. 2007 felt more of a transitional season leading up to his arrival at Hendrick.

  • @polycube868

2007 in general felt like a transitional season, 2006 was the last season of the Gen 4 whereas 2007 they ran Gen 4 on all 1.5 and up tracks and the Car of Tomorrow on the shorter ovals and road courses, then 2008 came and the racing sucked, the cars drove horribly, tires were controversial nearly ever fast oval and then 2009 comes and most of the issues with the cars were ironed out and the racing in general got better.

2007 I was so excited that Junior announced that he was going to Hendrick! He was like Christmas came early, and then Christmas was going to be 9 months long the next year. But I think him and his cousin moving together was in the long run a bad move cuz they had such bad habits they developed over the years. The communication was just horrible between the two of them during races. I think I've even heard Junior comment about it that it was just as much his fault as it was his cousins. Although he may not have gotten all the wins the first three or four years once he moved, Hendrick Motorsports and his teammates taught him a lot of stuff. Like how to train to be a champion..

If Teresa just would've given him majority of the ownership at DEI idk if dale jr would've won a championship as a driver but definitely would've gotten that organization championships with other drivers. Like that video you made "what if dale jr stayed at DEI?" I think drivers like Brad keselowski, Matt Kenseth and maybe even Martin truex Jr would've won championships for DEI. I think looking at truex jr 2007 season he proved that he had what it took but unfortunately truex suffered a few more years at that team and couldn't show what he was truly capable of because DEI at that point was on life support. I remember once dale jr missed the 2007 chase I didn't even wanna watch for the rest of the season but obviously I did. I was just ready for 2008 at that point because he was going to hendrick. 2007 should've been a season similar to his 06 season just with more wins. Should've won 2-3 races that year and made another run at the championship.

Just remember that in exchange for getting Dale Jr. and keeping Casey Mears, Rick Hendrick gave Kyle Busch to Joe Gibbs on a silver platter. Jr. would wins 9 times in 10 years and didn’t win 5 and a half seasons (2009-2012 and 2013) while Kyle Busch won a title and over 40 wins in that same time frame. No argument that KB outperformed Jr by far on their respective teams, but this was no accident or blunder by Rick Hendrick. He HAD his winning drivers in Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. By hiring Dale Jr, he hired the sport's most popular driver and it wasn't even close. That means a lot more sponsorship money, merchandising and advertising money. KB didn't have that kind of pull even if he was a nice dude.

He had 4 engine failures from race 20 - Brickyard 400 to Race 30 - Dega Fall Race including the 3 that he had prior to the Chase that essentially knocked him out. I WAS a jr fan since the AC delco days but that all turned.. As much as I hated that Teresa strained Jr's. career with DEI, it absolutely disgusted me the moment I heard him going to the Rick Hendrick organization. Because of this I immediately stopped being his fan. To me Gordon and Johnson was thee enemy and then having to see him join "the dark empire" totally pissed me off. I felt totally betrayed. Any memorabilia I had of jr, I sold. I rather had him form his own cup team, I mean he had Chance 2 so why not bring that team up into the cup series and associate himself with Truex? He would of been his own boss. Sponsorship wouldn't of been a problem because of his name and the sport was still popular at the time. Fast forward to now despite with the great equipment that was provided from Hendrick, Jr. still couldn't manage to win a championship which makes me wonder how is he in the HOF before other legendary names is beyond me. Although, I have alot of respect for him because how much he still dedicates himself to motorsports, to old school racing, and in helping preserve racing history however, I'll never get over how he did that one thing.

Dale SR. Had it set up that JR. Would take DEI. Someone else had other plans. Dale going to Hendricks, was a wise choice. Dale Dr. Would Appreciate that. Darrell Waltrip does because he cares for Dale Earnhardt Jr! Like all of us. Daytona! Let's go Racing boys!!!!!

I was pissed when he left DEI for Hendrick so I thought all those blown engines were just desserts. However, Truex had blown engines as well that season that ruined his Chase run, so I think the engine program was just garbage.

4 engine failures towards the end of the season? I feel like Sabatage might have been a key factor at the end there. Think about it, he announced he was leaving at the end of 2007, and then issues started happening. I Also think It's kind of funny how when Dale Jr. wrecked kyle busch, no big deal, when kyle busch wrecks Dale Jr. in 2008, "KYLE BUSCH IS EVIL!!! FUCK HIM!!" I personally was a fan of both drivers but this did kind of tick me off, I get Kyle Busch was not many people's favorite but dang... that was just unfair.

The real winner in this is Joe Gibbs. He basically had Kyle Busch fall into his lap out of nowhere and Kyle Busch has been way more successful than Jr. Hendrick also looks bad in this cause he let him go for a marketing machine in Jr. I think him going to HMS was the biggest mistake of his like, he was never going get better equipment than Johnson and Gordon. Should of gone somewhere else.

I remember Rusty Wallace saying something along the lines of "I thought with all of the sweat and equity of Dale Sr. put into this company, "Don't worry, It's all gonna pay off. When you're not blood that's huge. And Dale and Teresa aren't blood".. but in retrospect, 15 years later (damn, I feel so old) I think he did the right thing by moving to Hendrick... buy the best part is... Dale Jr got the last laugh, by winning 3 Xfinity Championships in 4 years... with JR Motorsports....

If it's a high profile name, you cannot tell me that there is no internal sabotage look at this and look at Kyle Bush in 2022 unheard number of engine failures in a single season in a lame duck season. Don't know who at JGR but you cannot tell me that Teresa was not behind the engine failures i call bullshit

Dale jr by far most overrated driver when he went to hms in history he never truly competed for a championship with hms sure he was good in 2014 and 15 but was knocked out in round of 12. I give him a pass though in 12 and 16 due to concussions. I'm glad jr sucked at hms after costing busch a shot at the title in 07 and jr fans whining and complaining when kb got revenge at richmond in 08 and jr shouldn't be a hall of Famer didn't consistley put up good numbers or win enough races to get in without a championship for the hof I only look at what you did on track

During the 2000s the NASCAR sure rigged and tried to fix a lot of races for this joker, some worked others didn't. It speaks volumes when you can't even win a fixed race!
