I remember hearing about this when it happened and I was attending a private school at the time or had just graduated can't recall. It was a point of discussion among our school because we knew kids like that. Had all the money in the world, would often push the crazy too far and end up in the watch house overnight. Next day back to being a crazy person. Wrap sheet as long as your arm yet they always seemed to land on their feet. There was a very famous case here in Australia where a teen got off when he was speeding in a very modified rx7 Mazda..... He was traveling at very high speed and the road was a dead end. He launched the car into the air off the berm at the end.. killed 3 people and almost himself. He got off with a slap on the wrist because his defence proved the road sign that indicated it was a dead end was knocked over and he didn't know it was a dead end. We couldn't believe it and we knew the kid, he was a nut case behind the wheel and we all knew it. He went to a school that was a very expensive private school in the city. Money for sure has an impact on the justice system which is a real shame. The fact a jury believed that afluenza bullshit is mental to me. I don’t care if he’s 16 or 45, if he’s never faced a consequence due to privilege and then kills four people by being a reckless, inconsiderate idiot, then it’s time he face a consequence. The whole theory is that his lack of discipline and authority figure lead to him killing these people, so their response is to not discipline him or highlight authority in society with a justice system who will hold you accountable? So how about next time the guy drives drunk and hits four people, “he didn’t face a consequence for the first time he killed innocents drinking and driving, therefore he shouldn’t now” What a system. Eat the rich.

I had heard that the reason a judge would let this fly was actually to try to get a much much harsher sentence later on. If he hadn't, the kid would have gotten a light sentence anyway due to him being a juvenile. However the judge KNOWS the kid will absolutely violate that 10 year probation when he's an adult and itl be at the time the full hammer of justice would drop. Its a legal tactic by the judge to try to get this guy more time when his hands are tied by the fact he's a juvenile. Its a gamble by the judge, but to be fair, you had to know this kid would certainly violate that probation. Of course, no idea why he only got 2 years of jail once he did. Shame.

The legal system is a crock of shit. Juvie is a literal joke and these so called “kids” need to be treated like adults. Yes, I do agree that minors should be split from actual adults, but they don’t deserve to get less harsh punishments.

It's incredibly upsetting that after all the disaster this kid has caused, he'll only get 2 years. If this story doesn't say that wealth leads to corruption I don't know what will. At least we now know their reputation will forever be tarnished with all these incidents piled up, but justice has yet to be fully served to this family...

I wish I could say that I’m amazed that the parents were never held responsible in any real way for the numerous crimes they committed throughout Ethan’s childhood. That does not absolve Ethan in any way- he showed no real remorse for the terrible things that he did. He clearly was just saying and doing whatever he needed to in order to avoid a serious punishment. I’m so sad thinking about all the people who were killed or injured senselessly. It must have felt awful for the victims and their families to be denied proper justice. I also feel bad for all the kids who weren’t rich, or white, who couldn’t afford a team of lawyers and committed non violent crimes. all the kids who didn’t get a slap on the wrist but instead were “made an example of” or punished more harshly for whatever reason. the system is beyond broken.

So now we know how many crimes you can get away with if you're rich. You may commit affluenza number of crimes before the system starts treating you fairly if you're rich.

Not gonna lie, I thought "affluenza" was synonymous with "influenza" when hearing about this was a kid. But why couldn't the parents get any jail time anyway? And since seems like a generational thing, why not arrest the grandparents too?

"Hey man, my name is Ethan. I can get you out of all of this..." That single witness testimony completely obliterates the affluenza defense. The kid KNEW he had crossed lines, and understood that he had done so before without consequence.

Or someone just slipped that judge a hefty "donation" to just ignore how the world works. Smh. They just added to the kids affluenza. Morons. He'll never understand the consequences of his actions if no one ever gives him any consequences. 🙄

I got arrested for a .2 of marijuana at 16 years old in Massachusetts, charged as an adult, put on adult probation, sent to a "teen rehabilitation school" where horrific abuses occured, and came back to Massachusetts at the age of 17, homeless, and with no assistance from anyone and no understanding of how the world worked. I grew up poor, and that arrest forever altered my life in a way that, now at 33, I am JUST getting myself together. I wonder if it would have been different had I been rich?
