The Most Football Obsessed City In The World

Спорт

One of the host cities at UEFA Euro 2024, Gelsenkirchen is much-maligned in Germany, due to it's perception as being poor, neglected, and unglamorous.
Whatever you say about Gelsenkirchen, however, you cannot question the city's passion for football.
From a population of just 260,000, Schalke 04 have almost 200,000 members, the second most in the Bundesliga, behind Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, and the sixth most in the world, ahead of Real Madrid and Barcelona.
In this video, HITC Sevens heads to Gelsenkirchen to speak to locals about their love for football, learn about the history of the city, and watch England's opening game of Euro 2024 against Serbia.

@@zellhaufen8583 Thats not true. Northrhine-Westphalia gets a lot of money out of the Länder-pot to this day. Yes, the east recieves more, but thats kinda understandable. Also try to have a train trip through the east. Apart from the big cities it doesnt look any different to Gelsenkirchen. Reality is, Gelsenkirchen and most of the east just arent economically that competetive for different reasons. Until there's an economic upswing in these regions, no money in the world will help.

17:02 That dude is making a parody of a German "celebrity". So there's this dude called 'Anzeigenhauptmeister' (high master of complaintments) who wears a uniform similar to the man in the video. He rides around on a bicycle and files reports on people for small misdemeanors like parking wrong in his free time and sends hundreds of them to the local authorities. He even reported his neighbor for parking wrong. He's really harsh, like he will file a report, even if your car is just two centimeters within a no-parking-zone. On his uniform he wrote POLIZFI (a misspelling of POLIZEI, police) therefore that dude wrote UEVA instead of UEFA.

If you want to explain to a German where Gelsenkirchen is located, the simplest way is to tell him "it's near Schalke." The city quarter is more famous than the city itself, due to the football team. A large part of the population has Polish roots, migrants who came in the 19th century to work in the coal mines. The Schalke team which dominated German football 1933-1942 fielded many players with Polish names. The two most famous of them were Fritz Szepan and Ernst Kuzorra. One of them played for Germany once, the other two times. The Nazis wanted their players in the national team to be Germans, and disliked Schalke. But the team was too famous and popular to undertake measures against them, other than ignoring them when the national team was selected, or rigging some games against them. Until 1942 that is; after the fall of Stalingrad, many of its players were drafted to the army.

Great to have met you Alfie and agreeing to having a photo taken with myself. You are a top bloke and just as nice as I thought you would be. Your work is great. This video is amazing. I came here in 2006 and it left a lasting impression. I described it as being “stuck in the 1960s” and I meant that in the nicest possible way. I remember that it was a small town centre - it seemed a lot bigger this time- very quiet with not much to do. And to top it all it had this amazingly modern and massive football arena. This time I ventured more and with my 2 mates we found this amazing brutalist building just minutes from the centre with a tourist information centre. There was nobody in and it seemed that there was a volunteer hub for the Euro volunteers. There’s a lot more to this place than meets the eye. I too found it very charming… I love a brutalist building…this is brutalist city. In 2006 I remember how great the public transport was and been telling everyone how great it was. I don’t know what’s happened this time. We went to the game and instinctively knew there were issues and it was apparent that it would not get better. We got to the town centre….it was empty. We got a Uber and thank God we did having heard the stories the next day. Keep up the good work Alfie….. And let’s hope England win… I would love for Gareth to win it…. He is much maligned for his style of play but that’s his trademark . I don’t expect anything different in our next game but we do look solid defensive and tight defences win trophies.

Gelsenkirchen being in the centre of the Ruhr area (one of biggest urban areas in Germany with over 5m people) probably also contributes heavily to Schalke's popularity. Just like the fan you interviewed many supporters aren't from Gelsenkirchen itself but from one of the many big cities around (Dusseldorf, Essen, Duisburg, Bochum etc.). Gelsenkirchen is more like a quarter of a much bigger city.

As someone from Germany I can confirm that the Heute Show cameo of Lutz van Der Horst is obsolutely amazing. Edit: I also took like 10 secs to figure out why Alfie had to explain "public viewing" to viewers.

10:54 😂 Yeah, I probably wouldn't have wanted to be on camera either because I'm shy. It's a very interesting video. I love these kinds of videos. They're so cool to know more about the history of the football/soccer teams. I love documentary series of stuff like this. It's just such a great game. The best of all of them in my honest humble opinion. Great job on the work of the video and please do more of these. :)
