The Most Feared SS Panzer Tank Commander of World War II

Even in the hands of an inexperienced crew, the Tiger was a formidable weapon but when manned by skilled tankers, it was at times almost unstoppable and some of Germany’s greatest tank aces would earn their status in one of these vehicles, often taking on greater numbers of enemy tanks in a single engagement and coming out on top. In this the second of our series highlighting the many Tiger aces of World War II, we are going to examine the story of Michael Wittmann, probably the most celebrated of his peers within Nazi Germany, becoming the poster boy for the Tiger force within German propaganda however it would be a mistake to believe that he was all hype. Far…far from it. Welcome to Wars of the World.

Wittmann's last Tiger, number 007, was hit in the rear left flank, the round penetrated the ammo stored there, resulting in the turret being blown off, as you said, the remains of the crew were buried close by, then in the 1980's the field was excavated , the remains of the crew were then re buried in the war cemetary . During the dig, Wittmann's service pistol, and a few other personal things were discovered, and given to his widow.

60 kms west to my city Alexandria city lies one of the most amazing significant museums and monuments of the ww2, its Alalamen city, Rommel's museums, the battlefields museum and weapons museum, finally 8 monuments related to the memory of the fallen ones You would be baffled to learn about the number of those died in this battle and the variety of nationalities. Also amazingly you see how this war was complicated, you find Greeks fought for the Germans, others for the allies, also Hungarians, Bulgarians and French, fought on both sides Every country have its own cemetery and own momentum. Italians as usual have the most pretty, you can call a wonder in architect with its glass art, fine most expensive granite floors, columns...etc natural alabaster marbel. Also i would say the Germans have second most pretty monumental structure and cemetery. The variety of weapons including Tigers 1 & 2, destroyed or in tact you can find few of both. Total of 172 thousands approx figure including almost 30% are unknown fallen soldiers (very sad) buried there from all nationalities (Libyans, Algerians, Tunisians, Egyptians, African commonwealth countries, Germans, British, Americans, Italians, French, many others including Dutsh, Polish and other pilots ...etc) total of 17 country!!!!! Than you see Rommel's bunker, his own daily personnel items, his coats, his medallions, ribbons, badges, his daily personnel stuff, his pistol, the original genuine Naxi flag flew over his bunker, his own machine gun. Of course and very unfortunate to say few items were stolen during the unfortunately stolen during the so called dark winter awful Arab revolutions in 2011. Anyway! I really recommend people to visit as on the opposite direction where all this history lays there are probably in my opinion one of the best maybe 10 beaches in the world, with the coast located less than 50 meters in some places from the monuments up to 900 meters far lays that amazing pretty turquoise water entangled with few other artistic colors, prurple, sky blue, very very clear waters. Several hotels suits all budgets, extremely safe area, u wonder alone no worries at all 24/7 and finally try to cone during the annual celebrations that takes place by the allies and German governments and armies. In case u love that kind of tourism combination, so definitely it's an event u don't wanna miss. May peace prevails and may peace be upon those whom deserves it. All love from Egypt the cradle of life❤❤✋

@@The.Original.Potatocakeshe volunteered to join the SS when it was apparent they were about to go to war. He would have believed in the “inferiority “of the Jews and Slavs as subhumans who didn’t deserve to live. It is impossible for him to have fought in a SS unit in Russia without at least witnessing atrocities. One of the transports he machine gunned at point blank range in Villegas-Bocag was a clearly marked ambulance killing the doctor, and he himself reported machine gunning the tank crews as they escaped their burning tanks. It’s rather disappointing to see the narrator using the propaganda figures given by Signal, the Nazi party’s own magazine for his kills. Not exactly a reliable source. He states “ a dozen Churchill tanks destroyed” yet there wasn’t a single Churchill even present. It wasn’t a full regiment even. He destroyed one Sherman Firefly with one of his first shots, and an OP Sherman that only had a dummy gun, two Cromwells and two Cromwell OPs with dummy guns, an M5 Stuart that charged the Tiger despite only being armed with a 37mm. Then another M5 that was unmanned. the rest of the 79 tanks he claimed destroyed in V-B were in fact Armoured personnel carriers, either M3 half tracks or Bren carriers. It makes you wonder what his true tank kills actually number. Michael Witmann was the product of Nazi propaganda. As stated he wasn’t the highest scoring German tank ace but Kurt Knister wasn’t a member of the SS, ( he didn’t get the medals showered on Witmann either. ) and wasn’t photo friendly either. Witmann wasn’t any tactical genius either. At V-B he went into the town alone leaving his other 4 tanks behind without having done any recon. He lost his Tiger, the first Tiger loss in Normandy. The next day he went into V-B with his remaining 5 Tigers, had all the propaganda photos taken and then lost all 5 Tigers in the British counter attack. So he lost 6 Tigers (out of the total of 36 that were in France at the time) For the loss of the those six medium and two light tanks. On the day of his death he led his 5 Tigers to destruction without the loss of a single Sherman.

the '138 confirmed kills' claim at 16:40 is incorrect. Wittmann was awarded 22 kills at Villers Bocage which is quite a feat for a tank that only met 12 British tanks. It is beyond dispute that his Villers Bocage score of 20+ is completely bogus. It was not even remotely 'confirmed' by anything and in fact he was just credited with every British tank that was knocked out that day. Even tanks knocked out miles from his location.

@@The_Conqueeftador Rubbish. I bet you are quite happy to believe every single claim made for Wittmann despite the fact 'you were not there'. This is very simple. The route Wittmann took into Villers Bocage is not disputed. It was filmed twice by German photographers soon after the evernt. There are about 100 still photos taken along that very same road. Anyone (that means even you) can count the wrecks. There is a series of low-level air views of the same road taken on July 1st 1944 where again you can count the wrecks. That means if you think there are more than 10 tanks lining the path Wittmann took into Villers then you should be able to provide a link to someone who has done that -or-you could do it yourself and get your hands dirty in some original research. The next step is up to you. Do you keep trying to preserve the lie that Wittmann destroyed 20+ tanks without any evidence or will you show us all exactly where knocked out tanks 11-20 are located?

At 13:44 the narrator says that Wittman became known as the "Black Baron". This is not true. I challenge the narrator to back it up. At 14:42 the narrator says that ground attack aircraft were a threat to tanks. This is not true. Their cannon could not penetrate the tanks; and their rockets had a 2% chance of hitting a tank. The narrator posts some photos to support his fake statement, but the Tigers in the photos were not destroyed by aircraft. At 15:37 the narrator claims that the Allies were aware of Wittman and he had a reputation among them. Once again I challenge the narrator to support that, because I am sure it's nonsense. So, anybody who came here to learn about Wittman, turn 180 and walk out. There are better authors who won't fill your head with rubbish.

at 15:14 it says 'killed scores of Infantry'. The only foot soldiers Wittmann encontered were 1st Rifle Brigade. They had a total of 15 men killed. So that claims is, just like his tank kill claim, massively inflated.
