The Most Expensive Dog in the World: VICE INTL (China)

Ойын-сауық

This year, a Tibetan Mastiff puppy reportedly sold for almost $2 million in China, making it the priciest dog ever purchased.
Originally domesticated as sheepherding guard dogs in the Tibetan Plateau, these large, puffy-haired, and extremely uncooperative canines are prized by wealthy Chinese for their alleged ferociousness (one zoo even tried to pass a Tibetan Mastiff off as a lion, according to some reports - dailym.ai/1xpFhsb). Over the past decade, Tibetan Mastiffs have become a status symbol for a growing class of new moneyed entrepreneurs. VICE China went to the the 2014 Yidu Tibetan Mastiff Fair in Tianjin to learn more.

I see awful inbreeding in this. Some of those poor dogs can't even walk because China has bred them to have so much fur and skin. These pokes dogs will not get better they will get worse. These animals are kept as tools to make money and auction off and probably never experience love and affection

It might not even be inbreeding... If you've watched Vice episodes on HBO, China's already manipulating DNA. They began experimenting on rats and I don't know if they officially began, but Chinese couples in this episode were already signing up for this type of treatment. It's not too far fetched that they're simply manipulating the DNA of these Tibetan Mastiffs, to give them a bigger mane. What's kind of sad about this, is that some Tibetan Buddhists believe that these dogs are reincarnations of Buddhists monks that were reincarnated into Tibetan Mastiff's and will be human in their next life time. Not only that, it almost comes off as a reminder of China's takeover of Tibet.

  • @Em-dh2eh

+piRaufasertapete I completely agree. China has destroyed this breed. This isn't what Tibetan Mastiffs are supposed to look like. Those poor dogs would fail as a working dog like their ancestors were. Look up old world Tibetan Mastiffs and you'll see a hardy, sleek, fierce, mountain dog not a bag of loose skin and hair. One day this dog is going to be so inbred you won't see any old world ones at all

I'm Chinese by blood, (I wasn't born in China) and I'm appalled to see how these people treat these dogs :/ We usually call these types of people "new money", due to the vast growing number of millionaires in China. They will do anything to show off their new status symbol as a wealthy person. Sadly they're using these dogs as assets, not as pets. F.Y.I, I love my pet dog, AND I'M CERTAINLY WILL NEVER EAT HIM. Contrary to popular comments in his video, not all Chinese people mistreats their pet dogs and devour them like chicken nuggets -_-

It's saddening to see that these beautiful dogs are treated like objects, only symbolizing the wealth and status of the owner. What's more is that the man that owns "The Standard" can't even give the poor dog a patch of grass to walk on or some compassion, nope, only concrete floors and fencing all around. It's sad that when "The Standard" wanted a simple break by sitting down, the handlers immediately forced him to stand back up as if he wasn't allowed to just rest and be a dog.

Another dog that got altered so much that it became a sad shadow of its own past. When a dog starts to look like a caricature, then there is something wrong! The way how those dogs look like, they would fail as working dogs. The dogs shown in this video have so much loose skin and wrinkles(to make them appear fluffier)that the skin falls into their faces and blocks their vision, and don't forget about all the bugs and bacteria that will go between the skin folds. Besides that, the dogs will also get overheated quickly and most likely have a wide range of other health issues. So not only to buy one of those will be expensive, also the vet costs will be skyrocket high. Maybe that is the value they see in those dogs? If you want to see another chinese breeding horror, look up "chinese german shepherd".

One thing I can't figure out is why some people think that tibetan mastiffs should cost so much. No doubt that the tibetan mastiff is a strong and tough breed, but people are overhyping this breed thinking that it is a great gladiator and can take large animals like bears and lions. The tibetan mastiff is one of the most overhyped, overly-expensive breeds with the main gimmick simply being its size. The worst part about it is that it has not really earned any kind of reputation by doing anything. People just look at it and think it is great and put a huge price tag on them thinking they can sell them for a lot by making people think they are much more than they actually are. Seriously, a dog that has a list of health concerns and is high maintenance should not cost that much money. Let people save that money for vet and grooming bills. People need to understand that bigger does not mean better. Take the American Pitbull for example, which is the toughest and greatest gladiator, athlete, and working dog ever, which was bred and is used to take on and control large animals like bulls, bears, and wild boar. Despite being the toughest, strongest pound-for-pound, and most versatile dogs, American Pitbulls don't get larger than 80 pounds. American Pitbulls were bred as farm dogs that would help and protect farmers from livestock, especially the bulls (bull is even in the name because). If a bull or whatever tried to attack the farmer, the American Pitbull would take it on and get it under control. I have even seen Pitbulls take on horses by themselves. The tibetan mastiff breed can't hold a candle to the American Pitbull breed overall. American Pitbulls are stronger, more athletic, tougher, more versatile, and are obviously greater gladiators that have been used to battle bulls and bears in gladiatorial competitions (things that tibetan mastiffs have never done). American Pitbulls dominate in strength and athletic sports like weight pulling. I have seen American Pitbulls pull over 12,000 pounds. On top of all that, American Pitbulls possess gameness (something that tibetan mastiffs don't have) which they will go to further lengths to do something or get a job done. And they are proven to have better temperaments than kangals when tested by the American Temperament Test Society. Tibetan mastiffs are better at guarding (which is what they were bred to do), but the American Pitbull has these dogs beat in basically every other aspect. Remember that bigger does not mean better.

Well that is how free markets work. If demand for a product sky rockets like in this case, then people will be willing to pay more for it. Not to lecture because I'm sure you know, it's not always about the product itself that makes it valuable. A lot of times it's the name, history, and other such things that can cause something that seems so average to most people to become so expensive. It's all a matter of opinion.

You totally miss the point. I'm not gonna comment your pitbull saying, but you have to understand this is not america. China is totally different than rest of the world, do you know that they casually eat dogs there? First of all, only people interested in dogs buy them, since then price is bigger on any pure-bred than outside china. Main thing, these dogs are not worth millions because of what they can do, nobody gives a shit about that, they became the STATUS SYMBOL IN CHINA. like a ferrari, or a mansion, rich tycoons buy a tibetan mastiff instead of a rolls royce nowadays. It's a status symbol and thats why its worth that much money

I am Tibetan and when my dad was younger he had a Tibetan Mastiff as a guard dog for his family, and that dog was very loyal and protective till he passed away. Tibetan Mastiffs are supposed to be loyal animals who will protect you/ guard you, not some dog to be groomed to be sold and put in a fashion show or what not. They are beautiful dogs, but it’s terrible how they’re being bred to be sold for the most money. Sad how China took our country and now is taking our beautiful animals.

Would people in Tibet go back to the theocratic way of life and government ... hmm? Where 95% of the people were serfs w/ no possibility for upward mobility, or getting out of indentured servitude and that the same caste status was passed onto kids. This was practiced until 1959 ... also Tibet was so isolated that it took days on horseback to reach Lhasa even from a nearby provinces, I for one like the fact that Tibet has been improved w/ better access to education and medical care for all and that transportation infrastructure has greatly improved and that common people are not under the caste system and can now own land ... during Qing and Yuan Dynasty Tibetan Buddhism was the national religion of China, and many Tibetan monks were part of high ranking officials in the government - this fact was alluded to by Marco Polo when he was in China during "Yuan" ... he mentioned some of these monks could make rain and do some extraordinary things and they willingly served the emperor as part of the dynasty.

VICE should really do a follow-up on this story development, because recently (for a few months now last I heard) this super hyped up Mastiff market has gone bust in China. It would be really interesting if VICE could get some of these investors involved in different stages of this speculative game to reveal some insights, and most importantly, what's happening to these once insanely prized canines (from some Chinese news sources that I've heard, many of these once prized "luxuries" are being sent straight to the butcher shops). I've heard people, who know nothing of the sport of dog combat or the breed the professionals use for it (the American Pitbull), say that the tibetan mastiff would easily beat an American PItbull just because of the size and all the fur it has. For people that think that a tibetan mastiff would just beat an American Pitbull because of how big the tibetan mastiff is, here is a battle between an American Pitbull and a tibetan mastiff - my.mail.ru/bk/synthetic_generation/video/1/441.html They ended up having to pry the Pitbull off of the tibetan mastiff. Like I said, bigger does not mean better. While breeds like the tibetan mastiff are more about quantity (how big they are), the American Pitbull is about quality (ability and traits such as gameness). In 2015 it was found that most of the astronomical prices were only due to breeders trying to force the price up, and due to excessive breeding and the fact then they do not make good urban pets, highend dogs will now only go for around £2000 whilst lowever end and crost breeds are regularly abandoned

GORGEOUS! Dogs, I just don't like how some of their handlers treated them - like the guy throwing the pup ontop of the cage! Sad really isn't it - that SO much money is spent on 1 breed!

  • @Noipirit

what they didn't say here is that these dogs are being bred in the most vile conditions; there aren't many of them and suddenly everyone wants to have them so it is common that the mother will be bred by her son which results in severely deformed puppies which are then killed. if there happens to be a puppy that looks okay they will sell it and the dog will die at a young age because of that. not only that but those dogs are fiercely protective and when locked in small apartments that has led to some accidents. those buying them are not thinking of the dogs as a living being, they think they're a manifestation of their wealth

Liz Rossi The people who buy these expensive dogs only use them to show off how filthy rich they are. They don't treat them like pets. They probably don't eve take them for walks. They have those dog handlers(the ones dress in camo) to walk them.

They failed to mention that there are lots of stories in Chinese history regarding how intelligent and fiercely loyal these dogs are. There were the ultimate working dogs in Tibet. There are plenty of stories regardinf how these dogs would guard their owner's livestocks and starve to death themselves. They are also thought to be so intelligent that they will remember you even if they've ever met you just once. Another belief is that no matter what' they will admit only one master in their lifetime. They are thought of as legendary working and guard dogs for Tibetian families.

My next door neighbor had one of these dogs, probably not near as expensive or genetically modified; however this dog was pretty aggressive it was always chained to their garage door and looking out into their front lawn. One day I opened the door (shouldn't have done that) and there was this man who had been bitten by the dog his hand was all covered in blood, it wasn't a big wound or anything because he has two German Shepard by his side, really well behaved. My dad took the guy to the ER; I don't know if my neighbor had to face some charges. However we did move shortly after.

My uncle has two Tibetan mastiffs, but not the pampered huge hair looking ones. Every time we go to places with loads of Chinese Tourists, they always want to take selfies and pictures of the dogs. I mean we've had huge crowds take pictures with them. It's because these types of dogs are closely related to wolves and are seen as rich in Asian countries.
