As someone with autism and a fan of eva, these arent fans of eva, because an actual fan of eva would be able to see evangelion says this kind of treatment and derision of others does nothing but isolate yourself and push the victim further away. Evangelion is like you say a series full of speculation and theories, but the only theories i reject are ones that go against the idea that its not ok to put others down and you need to accept others because that is how you find happiness. the joke is ultimately on the bullies, as tom was able to recover while they can't advance and become better people.

However, the online anime netizen with their anonymity only left me with distant and petty. Sure, they're only the most vocal yet not the majority of the anime fandom, however I doubt that most of us humans still conduct ourselves with integrity, when we're operating under the appearance of anonymity.

I don't understand why this kind of fandom are so toxic... Don't get me wrong, I'm an adult, I know that people are assholes, but seriously it's disappointing anyway. When I was younger, I thought that people who loves certain things, like Evangelion for example, with heavy psychological themes, would be more emphatic toward others problems. It was a naive thought, I know. As a huge fan of Evangelion since I'm a teenager, I feel ashamed for what happened to Tom. I'm glad that it ended well, I wish him the best.

I wish people weren't so garbage all the time. You'd think that a series as heavily laden with discussions of mental illness as Neon Genesis would have a more understanding fandom, but apparently not. I'm sorry, Tom. And I'm sorry to all the Toms out there. Hopefully videos like this can change things ❤

I remember this guy, he first showed up on the EvaGeeks forums, months before Reddit and Discord - where I found him as well. On the forums I didn't think anyone was toxic to him but he was certainly not being helped and being there going back to what had tormented him so much account after account was not positive for him either.

Holy shit. as of writing this comment, I JUST finished watching the final installment of the Evangelion rebuilds. My heart goes out to Tom as a fellow autistic person. While I haven't been bullied in fandom, and I'm a regular participant in many fandoms, I have enough of a heart to know that nobody deserves such treatment. I'm happy he's recovered. And now I'm going to vent. The very idea that one could watch this show and take no lessons from it. or even worse, learn lessons from it and go against those very same lessons. It's disgusting and appalling but most of all, it's disappointing. one of those comments said "Everybody's going through shit, you're not special." to tom and it just made me feel so fucking terrible. Yes, everybody is going through shit. But shouldn't you be kind to others because of that? It's heartbreaking that people can be so heartless. I've not interacted with any of the Evangelion fandom at this point, and I've always had good experience with other fandoms. So I'm confident in saying that when you watch something and violate its meaning in your behaviour while PARTICIPATING in its fandom is such a fucking shitty thing to do. These people need a dip in the fanta pool, for real.

  • @Di-Sapien

Most people seem to become shitty when they fall in love with a work. They'll say "It's just a reference to the show" while ignoring that the show is saying to do the opposite.

What a well put and informative video. Out of all your videos and other content you posted this one was much more different and i like it. It's unfortunate how tom had to go through all this and everyone who he made contact had the audacity to be douche bags. It's unbelievable how fandoms can be this disgraceful to one person and think it's okay. I'm glad that tom himself had a good outcome and completely left the fandom and has been doing good. I really liked this video and how you covered it.

Yeah, every person sees the world in completely different ways and I just really wanted to drive home the idea that we have to acknowledge, respect, and do our best to be accommodating. All I can hope is that this video drives that point tactfully and respectfully. As an aside.... You can always be as blunt as you'd like with me :) It's in the description now! For future reference, I don't believe in attribution being an ethical issue when it comes to *most* media published on the internet unless it is requested by the owner. My knee jerk reaction is to look for a disclaimer and then use the media in my work accordingly. Having said that, the video you pointed out to me falls in another category due to the content matter and context regarding it, so I appreciate you pointing that out to me.

Ofc an anime despicting psicological issues, sexual, religious and philosophical themes wuld have that reaction, Hideaki Anno was in a very low point of depresion when he made End of Eva, and the movie is a very direct critique to the "otaku" culture of the late 80s and 90s Japan and in some cases the early western anime culture before anime kind of got mainstream, thou is sad all this happened because his condition aggravated the response, is a very natural response to be affected by that scene and the movie itself, actually thats the point of the movie, not really to give a end to the series, is a big Fck you to those same anime fans that send Hideaki Anno death treaths and used the same tactics and behavior of the "new" anime era. Whoever tell you the contrary, and say Evangelion is justa whatever show or that Asuka is a simple waifu, or that Shinji is an incel and bla bla bla, is just lying or simple dint really comprenhend why EoE was made. I cant help him much, just hope he dont end hating the art mediun that is anime, i can suggest to him to search for several Hideaki Anno documentaries bout that time and im sure that will help him a little to understand why eva had that impact on him.

This is a myth. Anno and others who worked on the film have talked about how this was basically the other half of the TV ending and they'd always wanted to make it like this, the story that Anno made the film out of spite was passed around the internet and now people just believe it with basically no proof, which is maddening.

  • @jmdtaelon

@@littleredruri "Out of spite" is a big statement i dont do, but in the time betwen series end, death and rebirth and eoe, a lot happened and its clearly reactionarie, not want to see that, is to be blind. He as director had lot of freedom, but the "plot" itself dint change from the series or the manga, the letters and the grafiies are in the movie, why they will insert that if not as a comentary? To me, he gave the fans what the fans wanted. The are lots of documentaries and resourses to more or less get a clear picture of what hepened, so "no proof" is also a weird statement. We will never know some details but even after rebuild end, eoe get more sense and not really a mistery.

Each time he retold a story, he would add things. Eventually building these elaborate stories where he was wronged. He would accuse people of things, and build a regular interaction into a horrible event over time if he thought about it to much.

To say that certain people with mental illnesses particularly those who experience psychosis, don't have the right to use the internet indicates to me that you haven't given your comment a lot of thought. How about you learn about Asperger's and psychosis first, see how different these conditions influence your reality, and then reevaluate your vacuous platitude.
