@@m.a.156 fish do feel pain. Difference between humans eating fish and penguins eating fish is that humans don’t need to eat animals to live. All the fish you eat feel pain, suffer, and even mourn their young just like this penguin. So why would you eat them when you don’t have to? Especially if you feel so strongly for this penguin. Just know that every time you eat a fish you’re causing the same suffering that this penguin is feeling in this video. And you can stop causing that suffering relatively easily just by going vegan.

I'm not sure which was more moving: The mothers anguish for her lost baby or the kind penguin friend who consoles her. My heart breaks, but feels soothed by the penguin friend's compassion. It's amazing to see. I have pet rats and have seen similar behaviors with each other. Animals are so much more complex than we realize.

Right?? It's one thing for a mother to be grieving her child (a terrible thing). It's another entirely for another member of the species to SEE that pain, recognise it, and try to help. That's empathy - one of the strongest defining markers we use for what makes someone human. Animals feel all the same emotions we do.

@@LordofFullmetal especially since an awful amount of humans does not feel empathy. I gotta admit, I struggle with empathy too (psychosis, long story) nur at least I try. I mean, yeah, I don't always recognize it, sometimes it takes me a while to understand that when people Cry it's probably because they are sad, but once I know what they're feeling (or, sometimes, what has happened, in some cases I can imagine how they most likely feel) I empathise.

The fact the other penguin had compassion and tried to confront her, shows that animals have emotions like we do and an intelligence to understand

@Tom Ffrost Your point? Because, according to your logic, a mother that adopts a child cannot truly love said child because she did not conceive them/carried them for 9 months? They may not be biologically hers, but they are still her child. Besides, in this case, the chick was biologically hers, it doesn't matter how the gestation happens, its her chick. Penguins of both genders care for their young at great expense for themselves. They must go without food for long periods of time and then venture far out into the treacherous sea to bring back food. There are animals that do not invest in their young, but those who do care for them regardless of how they came to be. You can easily find tons of videos of different animals mourning over the loss of their offspring.

That is why I never really could watch animals documentaries. There is no show, nothing is staged, just pure life, beautiful or sad.

My cat lost her sister from one day to the other (she had an accident) she kept looking for her around the house for weeks, calling her... It was heartbreaking to see her like that, I guess one day she realized her sister wasn't coming back and she got very depressed and was not eating well and lost some weight, she got better with time, but she never got to cuddle and play like she did with her sister with our other cats... The attachments animals form are really strong, just like ours...

No, it doesn't work that way. 😟 We lost one of our cats, someone killed her in the garden, bit her throat. The second cat did not react to her body in any way, is still waiting for her. We took the second cat because she refused to eat, but it didn't help much. 2 years have passed, she is still very skinny and afraid of the bowl and we have to give her courses of cat antidepressants so that she can eat without fear.

Same with my cats. Both sister's. Together for 8 years and one got run over unexpectedly. Her sister who we still have to this day, she's nearly 11, just walked around the house doing such a sad call looking for her sister. Absolutely broke our hearts seeing her so sad ☹

Oh my God, that made me cry so hard I feel sick. Penguins are beautiful and endure so much to raise babies in those treacherous conditions, this is devastating😭

I have to say, this is the second time I have seen this and it still breaks my heart, any parent regardless of species always feels tremendous grief at the loss of any child❤️😥

Chelsy Lim they eat because 1. That child is too weak (sick and more) 2. Too many children. Their nipples is limited so does her milk. So by reducing the amount of her children. others could be survive instead of out of milk or fight for milk There are more i i forgot most of it.

Raising a child in such a harsh climate shows the true devotion of emperor penguins. A particular documentary gave me goosebumps

I never understood comments like this. Obviously the dislikes are from people that were incredibly saddened by this video and couldn't bring themselves to "like" it. Basically the thousands that liked it enjoyed watching the mother grieving over her lost baby.

Truly sad. One of the most touching things I have witnessed. If there's a heaven I pray that all life, not just humans, can have a place there.

Some animals can do very odd things when they lose there young like steal others young or even try to adopt something from other species in desperation. Maternal instinct are a powerful thing in social animals. The penguin will move on much faster then us humans but in that moment it likely felt all the pain we would losing a child.

Ugh this is so horrible. I remember when our cat Morgana had her litter and one of the babies died. She was devastated. The body of the little one was still on her box when we found him and she meowed for so long when we took him away. Then when her babies stopped nursing, we gave them to close friends and had Morgana neutered... She was depressed for 2 months. Went from a playful streetcat to a still sentry. She just stood there, watching movement. Ate very little and barely responded to our petting. After she recovered from the surgery she got a little better, but she was never the same

aw thats so sad, is she still with you? our cat had kittens when she was very young, and we did the same, i cant remember very much as I was younger then too, she is now 11 but was under 1 years old when she had her litter. She was never very affectionate, but I have worked hard to respect her space and we observed that she didnt mind cuddles when she was sleey so I would show her affection then and when I saw she had enough I respected that and left her to it. she has got so much more affectionate towards me now and not many people see her affectionate side, but its taken years of building trust with her xx

In movies it takes time for you to have an emotional bond with characters but this.. this was seconds..

😭😭😭 those poor penguins. Look how they console each other 😭. Though this is 7 years old so surely this couple has gone on to have many successful chicks.

We are all the same, it is good to be reminded of it from time to time. My heart flies out to the penguin mourning the loss of her child.
