I compared this method with the Chinese Waitress cast on, and find that its a touch more stretchy. I find the Chinese Waitress cast on to be a touch more attractive. Both are quite a bit more stretchy than the Twisted German/ Norwegian cast on method, which was my go to stretchy CO. This cast on method produces the same knot configuration as Jeny Staiman's slip knot cast on. The difference is using the needle to create the twist in the yarn vs Jeny's twisting the yarn with her left fingers. The trick to both is leaving just the right amount of yarn between each slip knot- too little and its not as stretchy. Thanks for posting. I liked your video and found it very easy to follow the first time through.

Thank you so much for this video. I was using the long tail cast on for socks, which worked fine for children's socks, but was too tight to fit over the heel on men's socks. I then tried the Old Norwegian cast on, but that wasn't all that much better. I have now tried your method and it worked brilliantly! Now the sock can get on the foot easily! The method is not too complicated, and looks good. I also appreciated your additional video where you show how to tighten the loop. I can see how it would also work well when you have to cast on in the middle of a project. I agree that this cast on should be much more widely known. Thank you to your mum, Karen

it works...at first it looked like the thumb method but no...you don't use the tail end of the yarn, only the working yarn. This method is also handy when you have to cast on a lot of stitches...you'll always have enough yarn no matter the amount of stitches you have to cast on.

This is exactly the same cast on on have always used since I learned to knit as an 8 yr old. I have never seen anyone else do this cast on...until now. It’s funny becuz I always thought I was casting on wrong. Seems everyone else else does the long tail cast on using the slingshot method. I wondered why more knitters never used this method. Seems to me it works for most if not all knitted projects.
@deborahcastelli590310 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. This is the standard cast on that appears in all of the old (before 1950) knitting books. I learned it as a child. Knitfish's Mom may have stumbled upon it honestly, as EZ used to say: nothing in knitting is likely to be new...she called her innovations "un-ventions...since she figured it had all been done before. In the case of this cast on, it was largely abandoned in favor of the long tail and other cast ons, since this one tends to stretch out of shape when knitting the first row or round, leaving the cast on edge rather unstable and unsightly. You will notice in the video, that the knitter is tugging hard after each cast on stitch, that is no accident. Without that yank on the yarn, this cast on is a mess. Learn the real long tail cast on instead, and then a few others.

Wow. I am someone who learned from my grandmother how to co a verity of fiber arts. I tried to learn to knit for years and just could not wrap my brain arojnd it. My grandmother learned from her grandmother and mother and the same several generations back. My ancestors learned to look, study, and then recreate the item by memory. i have finally learned to knig....4 years ago. I did not learn how to read a crochet pattern until about 6 years ago. I did start learning to read knitting patterns very early. The one thing i have found in all of my fiber arts is that of all the stiches, cuts, pulling, etc...in our time chances are it has been done before...even if we have never seen it. We may call it new and our discovery, but that does not mean it was plagorized. I know many mountain people, many tibe members who do not know how to read...some as younb as 20, and they get excited when they fiugure out how to recreate what they have seen or create something in their minds eye. Please understand i do not intend on hurting anyones feeling or be offensive, but i hope my chiming in on the what i find to be negative and purposefully hurtful comments willl gently remind all of us there most of the time are many more sides than we can see and we should try to find enncouraging words to get outr point across.

I forgot to add: the reason this works so well is that it is based on an e cast on, which is rightfully notorious for stretching way out of shape. Unlike the standard e cast on, each e is immediately stabilised by knitting a stitch into it. Those knitted stitches help keep the e caston from stretching hopelessly out of shape, gently transforming it into a nicely stretchy cast on.

Thank you so much for sharing this stitch. It is awesome and I have even started by just making a stitch and not using a slip knot. I really love this cast-on and will be using it a lot.
I'm a beginning knitter, so I'm glad to have learned this first!
Great tutorial! I will utilize this CO method in my hat design coming out soon. I will include a link to your tutorial and give you credit in my pattern as well. :)
Thank you for posting this, I have used it many times since I saw the video.
Thank you for this tutorial, I have been looking for a stretchy cast on that is easy and this is perfect and now will be my go to for stretchy cast on patterns.
This is the "sling knot" cast on that's used in net making. It's a line of slip knots. Your way of making it is much easier, I've never seen it used for knitting. When I saw this, I decided to use it for the cast on for an ankle sock and it works great. Your mom was a genius!
Love it! I'm starting to do cuff down socks and this is perfect
Thanks for sharing, it’s been my favorite for a couple years!!!
Super clear video, lovely cast on that I use quite a bit. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing this with us! It's working great for me - a bit of practice and I know it'll go very smoothly. I'm trying it out on a toque.
Great demonstration. Thanks for sharing. I find your voice so relaxing.
Just saw a link to this tutorial in someone's Ravelry project notes. Very curious to try it! Thank you for posting.
This is just the cast on I needed for my project! Thanks much to you & your mom for sharing! Wishing you well & take care🤓
Love this for socks and cuffs- it's just great! Thanks for the tutorial.
After looking at at least 20 videos, i find this one method the easiest to learn to achieve and with the best end result, stretchiest and versatile ... at a girl!!!! Thanks for sharing this wonder ful cast on.
Love this cast on. Use it all the time. Thank you!
THANK YOU! I love this cast on and use it on all of my ribbed cuffs/hats!
Works beautifully!
This is very helpful. I also like the way you make a slip knot!
I like this method so much more no need for the "long tail " which some times is not long enough.
This is awesome! Thank you so much for sharing. I was looking for a cast on for top-down fingerless mitts and I think this will be perfect.
Thanks for this - it's very helpful!
Thanks! I'm new to knitting and looking to try everything.
OMG, why did I not find this video much earlier ? - thanks a lot - this made my knitting life perfect.
Why did it take me this long to learn about this? WOW! Thank you
This is really efficient. Thank you very much for sharing x
Thank you knitfish - this is just what i was looking for :) x
Thank you so much , it had help me a lot in my design. From Dallas!
Thanks so much to you and your Mom. I am over the moon now in appreciation for you taking the time to post this video. Cheers
Thank you very much! This seems a very good method!
Love it!!!!! Thank you
Thank you for sharing this!
Thank-you! Nice and slow there, got it at last, yes, it certainly is a wonderful thing!
This is my favorite elastic cast on!
This is how I cast on, I didn’t know that this was a different way. Thank you for sharing. Now I know it is an oops! It is perfect. Thanks again.
Thank you for the video. I will most definitely try it.
Thanks for sharing so generously! I'll def9give it a try, Nancy
What an interesting technique. One I'll certainly try on my next pair of socks. Thanks.
Hm... it stretches indefinitely!!! I can pull cuff of the sock up to my knee with same number of stitches I've always used for my socks! This is awesome! Thank you for sharing!
aka Buttonhole cast on (Montse Stanley); Jeny's Stretchy Slip-knot cast-on (Jeny Staiman); Single Yarn Double Knot Cast On (oftroy--see KZread video). There are several ways to make the slip knot, but basically, it's just a series of slip knots on the needle.

I've been looking for a good stretchy cast on to use with the fishnet stitch I invented a few years ago, and this looks like it might just fit the bill! Thank you for sharing it.
Good. GRAVY! I spent more than a few days looking for A stretchy short tail cast on ... I'm not sure this is the nice one that I used before but I will give it a try Thanks for posting
This is the best Thanks for sharing it 🙏🏻
YOU are "a wonderful thing". . to share this with everyone. . thank you!!!
I would call it stretchy thumb cast-on to remind me how to do it. Thanks, so useful.
my grandmother taught me this cast on 20 odd years ago. she always used it. she is 97 now
It’s a very pretty cast on, but when you yank on that yarn I get worried!😂
This is exactly how I do it. I was just Rayville how to do a stretchy cat on and realized I was doing it incorrectly, however I do it just like this 😊
Very interesting. Looks like 1st part of estonian cast on. Thanks for the demo.
it works...at first it looked like the thumb method but no...you don't use the tail end of the yarn, only the working yarn. This method is also handy when you have to cast on a lot of stitches...you'll always have enough yarn no matter the amount of stitches you have to cast on.
Thank you very much
My Nanny used to do that cast-on, but I couldn't remember how to do it. Thank you 😘
thanks ur a star
This is exactly the same cast on on have always used since I learned to knit as an 8 yr old. I have never seen anyone else do this cast on...until now. It’s funny becuz I always thought I was casting on wrong. Seems everyone else else does the long tail cast on using the slingshot method. I wondered why more knitters never used this method. Seems to me it works for most if not all knitted projects.

That really looks great! Must be fantastic for socks and even better, HATS!!! :)
my Favourite CO - thank you😃
I forgot to add: the reason this works so well is that it is based on an e cast on, which is rightfully notorious for stretching way out of shape. Unlike the standard e cast on, each e is immediately stabilised by knitting a stitch into it. Those knitted stitches help keep the e caston from stretching hopelessly out of shape, gently transforming it into a nicely stretchy cast on.
Thank you! Beautifully! I am is Russia.
yes .it is a good cast on my mother teatch me . I used it until now.
Очень понятно и достаточно легко набирать, даже без перевода. Спасибо.
I can't follow this, I've been trying for ages. I cast on two stitches instead of one every time... am I doing something obvious wrong?
when i do this why am i getting such large spaces between my cast on stitches?
I guess this would be necessary for socks, but I prefer the slingshot method, which I’ve used for 51 years. But, excellent tutorial!
I am gonna try this cast on today! Very interesting and I can see how this could be applied in other areas such as button holes. It looks like a pretty edge. Is there an accompanying cast off? Suzanne
Amasingly stretchy, thank you. Thank you. Didn't she do well to make a mistake and come up with this.
Wow, I am really struggling to get this despite being an advanced knitter. Having a tough time pulling each knot snug and also getting my tension right between each c/o stitch -- I suppose both will come with practice (if I can stick with it and not go back to my fave, twisted German. Does anyone have a different video or tute that might help me visualize this better?

Search for Jeny’s Stretchy Cast On, there are lots of really good clear videos and this is basically the same thing. The loop can be difficult to pull tight at times.
Im usually very good at following along with these types of tutorials. However, I keep ending up with 2 cast ons with each one. I guess I don't get it.
Brill, will try tomorrow
