In 2002 Mike Harmon had a tire go down during NASCAR Busch Series practice at Bristol Motor Speedway. He hit the same spot in the gate that Michael Waltrip hit 12 years earlier with a very similar result. Except the general public probably has never even heard about this incident. The car was split in almost three pieces all around him, then RCR driver Johnny Sauter with nowhere to go hit the spinning car only inches from Mike's unprotected driver seat. Today 21 years later Mike still has the car and is preparing it to go to the Talladega Motorsports Hall of Fame Museum. We get to to check it out up close before he takes it over!

As a chassis builder, I can relate to how Sauter felt. I watched as one of my customers hit the pit exit wall which was flat coming out of turn 4. A spot at a track such as that were called "widow makers", and this guy got turned and hit square into the flat spot. it pushed the right front tire into the passenger seat area. I turned white because I thought he was dead. I saw my whole life being ripped away from me in that instant . The driver walked away. People later were criticizing my workmanship etc. After it was all said and done, The driver was fine, inspectors said what I built had performed as intended. The driver had me build another car for him. I watched and studied both Michael Waltrip's and this wreck, and there is only one conclusion: God intervened.

I always wondered if anyone else ever hit that same gate/wall section where Michael Waltrip hit that was so horrific to witness, and if so, was it about as bad??? Thanks to you guys, the answer is yes. I knew that they had redesigned that gate but it's crazy how someone failed to insert the poles that secured the gate to keep the end of that wall from cutting cars in half. It was amazing to see the crash footage and how Mike got out of that car all by himself. Thank God he was ok. This stuff is scary. Like Mike said: "Show em this car and ask em "How bad do ya really wanna race?" Thank you Mike.

And the fact he walked out of that car, with only one scratch. Yes both him and Micheal Waltrip are very lucky men to survive such horrible crashes, and as he mentioned it was not at a incredible top speed, was less than 90 MPH. I remember Richard Petty crash in 87 at Daytona, and other Daytona crashes where the cars were in better shape than that after 150 MPH hits. Keep up the good work, love your work.

Have been in a racing accident with a F1 sidecar and seeing this I can confirm time really slows down to slow motion. Still can remember the moment the rear got loose from oil on the track, seeing the guardrail and kicking the gear hard down trying to turn it over sideways and not hitting head on. Managed to pull it out, and hit kind of sideways, spinning the chassis rear first on the sand trap. Passanger platform digging in to the sand and realizing its going to flip over. I tried to make myself as small and flat in that cockpit as I could, spectators told me later it must have been 3-4 meters (10-15 feet)high in the air as they saw the chassis bottom from the pits. Landed upside down and when I regained consciousness lying under the chassis I had the deadman’s kill switch between my thumb and index fingers. Don’t remember pulling it but I did. All that took as much time as it takes to hit your hands together. But seemed like it took forever to hit going around 100 miles an hour. Every time I see a crash, I feel it. Awesome content as always! One of the few channels that I dont skip a single moment from the videos.

Two crashes, both in similarity, as in the way the crash occurred and the outcome, both drivers walked away. Testimony to the engineers who build these cars and the safety products as well. Thanks for sharing!

I didn't forget, I was sitting in what was turn 2 back then. Sounded like a bomb went off. The gate flung back with such Force it bent.

@@Stapleton42 Mitch those drivers back then were on the gas just past corner entry and sideways off! He was full throttle by then. Big E used to have his right hand and arm straight out holding the roll bar to keep his body from moving in the seat. From our old seats we could see straight down the track and switch the banking we could see in the cockpit. We could see Trickles cigarettes tapped to the roll bar. The track was asphalt back then and smaller.

I remember the crash at the time and Johnny Sauters reaction to it, he was covinced he killed Mike but ive never had a good up close look at the car, it still brings that pit in my stomach feeling, just like Michael's And Bodine's crashes

that gate was such a bad idea, im glad they quit that, and that they have safer barriers too now. Between those improvements, Hans device, chassis braces and gusseting you can see how guys can fly up into fences at 175mph, stop dead, and walk right out of it like what happened to austin dillon years ago
