The MOST COMMON Cause of Hair Shedding (Dermatologist)

Hair shedding in the shower? Noticing hair fall out when you brush your hair? Have you ever wondered what the most common causes of hair loss are? In this video, Dr. Syed discusses experiences from his own clinical experience of patients with hair loss, what the triggers are for hair loss, how it should be worked up by your doctor, and whether there are any ways of treating a condition called 'telogen effluvium'.

    What you're patient went through is EXACTLY what I'm going through, literally everything. From how thick my hair was to how I'm avoiding washing it because I just lose so much every time I wash it. 😔 I've lost about 30 to 40% of the volume/ hair from what I had. I'm going wild and it's an obsessive thought now.

    @Dr. Usama Syed I have a dermatologist appointment, my second one actually. The first dermatologist didn't even look at my scalp, she saw a bit if dandruff and said "use this prescribed shampoo" that was all! So I'm going to l for a second opinion, I'm hoping I get some lab work. Is there anything I should ask or insists on if I feel unheard again??

    I got Covid in Aug 2022 by 0ct. 2022 my hair was shedding a lot, scalp was sore, and hair texture was different. I went into panic mode as you do. At first I thought I was working out to much which meant I washing my hair to much. I even change shampoos. Then, My hairstylist noticed my hair looked thinner. Which freaked me out because I see her 2-3 times a yr so the fact she noticed scared me. I went to KZread started looking for things to help my hair grow. I purchased vegamour. And it irritated my scalp. I was constantly looking up ways to make my hair grow. I would see some people leaving in the comments about Covid hair loss. And I would think that’s crazy but never paid attention to it. I called my dermatologist to make an appointment but they couldn’t see me for a month. Which mean I was panicking, upset, depressed, would cry all the time especially after showers or brushing it, then wouldn’t want to brush it, and wouldn’t want to wash it. At this point I didn’t know it was Covid related. Decided to call my primary on a Friday to make an appointment for following Monday. That Sunday I was brushing my hair soooo much fell out. So I ended up just looking into Covid hair loss and sure enough everything I was experiencing confirm it was this. I felt relieved in a way because I feel like I found the answer. I was up till 4am watching KZread videos (dr. Dray she a dermatologist), articles, and other people experiences. I went to that appointment feeling good (left feeling worse… I’ll explain). I explained to the Doc the symptoms and told her I came across Covid hair loss. She straight up told me “we don’t have enough info on that what else are you hear for”. I was shocked be her response. I explained to her the research I did and I wanted labs done. She was like it could be a thing but we don’t have enough info. I asked her if she could check my iron and vitamin D because they are related to hair loss. She said vitamin D has nothing to do with hair loss… it actually does especially if your severely deficient. I went to get my labs done. I asked the person taking my blood what she was testing. She said testosterone, WBC,RBC…. Never checked iron or vitamin D. I was pissed. Went to the dermatologist. Explained everything and she told me that she was experiencing the EXACT same thing I was TE from Covid. It was nice to be heard. She sent me for iron and VD labs. And it turns out I was a little low in iron and SEVERELY low in vitamin D. If my primary doc would of checked it I would of known 2 weeks before this appointment. Im currently taking iron, vitamin D, and I use the irestore helmet. Also, I have thyroid disorder but my endocrinologist checked it and was within the normal range so that was not causing hair loss. My hair loss has slowed down, I see hairs coming in, (mentally that’s what I focus on is the new growth) I use no heat on my hair, I do a lose bun when I have to have it up other than that’s it’s down, I use detangler, and will be getting my labs redone at the end of this month and will see the dermatologist next month. Please be your own advocate when it comes to your health this whole process is what taught me to be aware my health. I now have a new doctor. I wish you all the best in your journey. 💜

    Don't despair. If a hair sheds, that means a new one is growing and pushed out that fallen one. :) My job was cut late October 2020 and I experienced so much stress over Nov-Feb. After the daily job search, I did a lot of mountain hiking every afternoon, lost 15-18 lbs very rapidly and have continued to slim down, so that might have added to my TE. As stated, right at the three month mark in late January, I noticed increased shedding during showering, drying off and combing hair. Hairs would fall out all day from light pulling to clear them out. My Richard Nixon hairline receded and thinned to a more narrow "Florida" shaped one. Two months later into April, shedding really increased. My temples' hair is very thin and I noticed that I can see my scalp along the sides of my head when looking straight on in a mirror. My top hairs are over six inches long and with so many of those shed my hair doesn't pile as thick and gets easily blown messy by wind. I was "relieved" when in early May I noticed that my toenails and some finger nails had grown out to show horizontal, indented lines in them (beau lines). That is a symptom of TE from my October job loss stress shock event and I knew then that my hair loss was temporary. Around June 15 I noticed very few hairs in the shower, while drying and combing but sadly, I can see so much scalp after towel-drying my hair. Yesterday while I was using a store bathroom and examining my hair in the mirror, the bright lighting showed that I had LOTS of 1/2" to 1 1/2" tapered new hairs peaking out all around from my longer top hairs, my hair part and among the hairs in my hairline !!! I had lots of shedding during May/June so it will take all of 2021 before all those new hairs grow some length and add to the fullness. I will give an update on this comment end of Dec. During Covid I have avoided getting haircuts, but a relative recently trimmed all my hair ends and it's easier to comb wet hair as tangles seemed to add to hair getting tugged out. So trimming hair ends is a recommendation on my list.

    @@usamasyed I’m working in the private sector as a clinical assistant. I graduated from Baghdad Uni, Iraq. Our system here is similar to the UK in that one entity in the public sector (the NHS or the Ministry of Health) employs all doctors. But due to the lack of good management in the country, the government can’t afford to employ any of the recent graduates!! Even though we have extreme shortage in doctors. So the class of 2020 is expected to be employed in 2022!!! I was contemplating taking the step 1 exam, until I saw your video about what the change to pass/fail means to IMGs, then I became sure taking it within the next year was the optimal next step. Thank you so much for posting this. I started losing more hair than I have ever lost in my life around 8-9 months ago. As I have also been dealing with a recently-developed and undiagnosed chronic illness for 12-16 months, I was terrified of what could be happening. The patient story you shared is so similar to my own (and, I'm sure, many others'). I, too, stopped showering regularly. When I did, it always turned into a cry-fest because it was so scary to see just fuckloads of hair covering my hands and shoulders. After disclosing this to my therapist last week, she recommended I look into telogen effluvium. And I'm so glad I did. While I haven't yet returned to my prior frequency, I can at least shower without bawling my eyes out. I spend more time removing all the shed hairs off of me than I do actually cleaning, which can be tough to deal with. . . but, I *am* relieved to find I am not dealing with it alone. Shout out to my fellow Hair Losers 😅❤️

    This is absolutely one of the best videos I've seen on TE, and I've watched quite a few. I had COVID in October and ridiculous amounts of hair shedding in January. Because my hair is curly (and was long at the time), the shedding hair didn't just slide out. Instead, it snaked itself around rooted coils of hair, creating these huge dreadlocks about halfway down the length of my hair. It was horrifying. My incredibly loving and patient hairstylist worked through the dreads, but it took her about 4 hours to do so. I am now wearing my hair shorter than I have in over 20 years. When I spoke to a primary care physician and suggested that this may be telogen effluvium as a result of COVID, he quickly told me that he's been working with COVID patients for years now and has "never heard of that." His arrogance was alarming. Anyway, Doc, thank you for the clarity. I'm pretty sure TE is what I'm dealing with, but I'll be seeing a dermatologist just to be sure.

I didn’t want to recover for the longest time and I still really struggle… I fought it, but my hair got thinner and was falling out horribly if I even touched it. Coming out in my brush, shower or I’d even be in the kitchen cooking and look down and have hairs all over my shirt like it had been snowing hair. My volume of hair has went down considerably, but it has seemed to slow down some. I’ve never had anything happen like this before Covid, so I know it has to be that. It nice to know that the shedding means I’m in recovery phase. I just wish it would all hurry up and grow back out instead of taking 6 to 9 months.

    I came across to your video and really wanted to share me journey.. I was 16 when I had some severe health issues and first time in my life I experienced major hair loss at that point I lost all mt hair almost all the volume. At that time it was because of nutritional deficiency .. I started working on my hair and started using castor oil and after 3 years my hair has recovered. But then after 2 and half years my hair has again falling out like crazy and they continue to fall I should say hair loss.. After 1.5 year of my continue hair loss I diagnosed with PCOS now I'm on contraptive pills but my hair has crazingly falling I saw hairs everywhere.. In that time I'm using rosemerry oil which helped me to regrow which is a good sign but my hair is continously falling from last 2.5 years 🙃 i'm still very anxitic about it! But when I listen to this video I feel a bit relived that they will grow back! But that feeling of losing hair is very bad!

    You made me feel so much better. I started losing hair in August. I’d lost over 40 pounds from Jan-October. It’s still coming out, but when you said new hair growth is making hair fall out my heart skipped a beat! Yay. I also noticed my hair didn’t grow from April - August. It is really scary to lose this much hair. And I’d grown it long for the first time in 15 years. 😰

    I’m 42 and experiencing the same thing. High stress last fall then Covid at Christmas and now my hair is shedding. I see the white bulb too. This is what I’ve found. A hair that has a white bulb at the end of it is called aClub Hair. The white bulb is made of keratin (protein) and this bulb is responsible for rooting thehair in the follicle until it sheds and thehair growth cyclere-starts. In this way, the white bulb - is an indication that your hair is in the Telogen phase of growth.

  • @Harrison3-b4t

    @Harrison3-b4t

    2 жыл бұрын

    Telogen. The resting phase when very minimal cell activity takes place. At this point, a new anagen hair is forming under the surface and will soon push the telogen hair (along with the white bulb) completely from its follicle.

  • @Harrison3-b4t

    @Harrison3-b4t

    2 жыл бұрын

    All hair lost at the root will contain a bulb. It may be small or large, white or pigmented. The bulb is always present when it comes from the source (that is, the follicle). A hair without a bulb, then, means the hair was lost prior to the root. This is caused by premature breakage, typically a result of tension or physical stress. A few things that can lead to hair breakage include:

  • @Harrison3-b4t

    @Harrison3-b4t

    Exogen. The stage in which telogen hairs are shed and newly-formed anagen hairs push through the follicle. During this stage, 50 - 100 hairs are lost per day.

    I have chronic telogen effluvium…my dermatologist confirmed it was TE 2 years ago after a biopsy. I have an idea of what the underlying cause is (my horrible sleep schedule), but not 100% sure. Even though the lab results showed no signs of hair follicle miniaturization, I feel like some follicles simply aren’t regrowing hair. Is it possible for a follicle to remain in the telogen phase indefinitely? I’m not even seeing any baby hairs grow

    You have honestly really helped me feel better. I do believe that I might be going through the same thing. My hair is shedding immensely. Looking back, I started my diet and exercise to bring my triglycerides, cholesterol and diabetes down to a norma level in mid Dec 2020. I have lost 30lbs (with majority weight shedding off between mid December to February and gradually a few pounds after until now). I have noticed shedding over the past month and a half and it has not stopped. 😭😭😭 I naturally have very thin hair and to see it shed in batches, I can see my scalp 😭😭. Any thoughts to confirm this? Anything we can do to help speed up the process of recovery?

    I feel very lucky to have found your video (thank you for explaining it so well!). This is exactly what I'm going through right now! I was on birth control for only 2 years (Yaz+Yamin) and after stopping it in August I've lost an incredible amount of hair. Getting a dermatologist appointment has been very hard due to the wait time so I have to resort to my own research while I wait to get in. I've always had very thick abundant hair and now the diffuse thinning and shedding has gotten me very depressed and stressed. I keep telling myself it's temporary but it's such a challenge to not freak out :( My recent blood test also showed a significant deficiency in Iron unfortunately. My question to you is, while I painfully wait for the shedding to stop and regrowth to begin again, will the iron deficiency slow my progress? I'm taking iron supplement now plus a multivitamin also on an alternate basis but I know it will take quite some time to get sufficient amounts again.

    would really appreciate if you had the time to read this I turned 14 in october 2021. Mid July i started to experience (what i’m pretty sure) is TE, although the only reason i noticed was becuase of a noticeable decrease in my hair volume (not visible at all), about a week later, on the 27th, i broke my collarbone meaning i was at home all the time, this is when i really started to notice, i would have about 40 hairs on my pillow in the morning and the towel would be covered in hairs after drying my hair, every time i pulled at my hair lightly hairs would come out, this made the next month a very stressful period for me, when i got back to school at the start of august, about a month and a bit since this had started, i started to not worry and just sort of forget about the situation as i was always doing things. nearly 6 months has gone and i am still experiencing the same amount of shedding, possibly a little less, but hardly any difference, and im not really seeing any regrowth, my scalp is very visible all over my head when my hair is wet and when it is dry my scalp is only visible around the back of my head (my crown). my hair is still continually getting thinner and it seems that even the short hairs that are regrowing are also shedding. Is this normal? And will my hair grow back? If so how long would that take and is there any reason i’m not seeing much regrowth?

    I’ve been experience a fairly steady amount of excessive hair shedding for over 10 months now. If it is stress related I think I can pinpoint a cause starting around 13 months ago that then resolved itself by around 11 months ago. Then, in June of this year I had a fairly major surgery having my gallbladder removed. So now I’m wondering if that caused a reset and furthering of TE or if I just have chronic TE. I’ve considered going on minoxidil but am worried I’ll be stuck using it life long when potentially it still could resolve itself.
