    As weird a choice as Squaw Valley might have been, dude pulled it off and set himself up for huge success afterwards, so... cap tipped.

    Might as well add Brisbane 2032 to this list. Our government assured us it would be cost neutral with minimal outlay but now all we hear about is how we have to spend billions on new stadiums. It's already dumpster fire that no one wants.

    Our Mayor in Christchurch New Zealand wants to host the commonwealth games. We are struggling with big rates rises over the next few years, the city isn't even half rebuilt, the roads are a mess, the swimming complex is overdue and over budget and at this rate will never be finished but the Mayor thinks it's 9k to waste our money on it.

    @@naedynot1 the 2030 games. But by then our rates will be so high no one will be afford to live here let alone buy a ticket. I can't see our city being finished by then to be honest. it's over 13 years since the quakes and we are far from being totally rebuilt

    I didn't realize there was still so much to do and rebuild in Christchurch after the earthquakes! Maybe hosting the Commonwealth Games would force the powers that be to finally get that work done?!

    The IOC selects the host city 7 years before the actual games. So, Moscow and Los Angeles had been selected as host cities long before the events leading to the boycotts. The IOC may have its faults but it can hardly be held responsible for the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

  • @lamelists

    @lamelists

    While the immediate cause of the boycott was the Afghanistan invasion, the Cold War had still be raging for decades with ups and downs in relations, so it was almost inevitable these would be contentious choices in back-to-back games

    In fact, Los Angeles was the only candidate city for the 1984 Olympics, so it's not like it was much of a choice.

    @@lamelists Yeah, we only had the garden variety scandal, bribing some IOC officials to award us the games and what not. The LDS church actually wanted to use the games as a platform to advertise and showcase their religion to the world, but all that was shelved when the September 11th attacks occured just 5 months before the games and instead the games were used to rally the American people. Also I don't know how closely you follow American Politics of the last decade or so, but this was the games that launched the political career of Mitt Romney (2012 Republican presidential nominee, one of the few GOP members very critical of Donanld Trump) Romney through his connections became the chief planner and director of the games, and as you pointed out, the 2002 games were a huge financial and ceremonial success, Romney was catapulted to a Senator almost immediately after.

    @@lamelists yeah this one is pretty tough, apparently it's no up to standards still... But the biggest concerns are security and, of course, strikes. We have had a very tough few months (and by months I mean years) and it's one social issue after another. The farmers strike ended a couple of months ago but they are still unhappy and I would see them using the olympics as a platform. France isn't at peace at the moment, socially speaking, I'm afraid aa lot could go wrong, the Olympics aren't a good idea at this point.

    There was nothing wrong with Helsinki. The population size of the city is irrelevant; presumably the national Government helped with the costs and as you say, there were good sized crowds in the stadium, so guess what? Finns and others travelled from elsewhere to Helsinki for the games. And there are many of us in the world who are more comfortable doing sport when the temperature is in the sixties rather than the nineties. And Helsinki is not a lot further north than Stockholm, which has also hosted the games. That said, because of the much greater expectations and costs now, hosting the Games is becoming less politically affordable by democracies. I expect very soon the Games will be bought by one of the Arab oil-producing nations keen to sportswash their reputation.
