There's a project called Elend that is this sort of Neoclassical Dark Ambient (I know, metal adjacent music and making up genres). The album the Umbersun could easily slot Neige right in there. It's essentially Dantes Inferno, the musical.

Blackgaze just has that amazing soundscape that scratches an itch I had for years but never knew how to get rid of. Then I went down the rabbit hole.. and oh man, so many good bands. Lantlos, MØL, Amesoeurs, Numenorean, Heretoir.. Alcest is definitely the best of the bunch though, can never get enough of them.

I do like emotive screams too. One of my favorite examples of this is Thomas Väänänen, the first vocalist of Thyrfing. IMO his peak performances were on two albums in particular. Their fourth album, Vansinnesvisor (2002), esp in the final track "Kaos Återkomst" and the fifth one, Farsotstider (2005). He left the band after that in 2007, but those two albums are forever among my favorites of all time.

Oh dude, our last album "liminal Rite" was directly inspired by Pulse / surreal. I'd even go ads far as to say if it weren't for Lantlos, kardashev wouldn't exist. Haha our guitarist and I used to put white miasma on repeat and lay on the floor with the fireplace going for hours. Good times. Long story short - I 100% agree!

Regarding Neige's voices (clean and screamed) I have heard in an interview that he saw his work like an open door to an oneiric, dreamlike world, where the clean singing would represent us in this world, and the screamed vocals would be the opposite, a spiritual being trapped in ours. I don't remember if it applied to a specific album, but I believe that the way his scream sounds, and I believe that's why I and many people like you love it, is because it feels real, it feels like an authentic pain/help call, it's not a "basic" metal scream, it feels like a cry to help

Alcest is probably my favorite metal band of all time and actually someone suggested your band because of them and that’s how I got into yours. Love this video and the tips you gave on his scream have already started helping me with my own high screams for my band. I also saw your mewithoutyou video yesterday and they were a huge band for me in college. Saw them twice during that catch for us the foxes tour. I’m not as big on death metal (more of a black and postmetal guy) but seeing you love these two bands makes so much sense on why I also love your music.

I admit. I scrolled through the comments to see if anyone would mention the origin of all. Those damned screams...tremendously different in meaning compared to the more "modern" ones but no less impactful. Perhaps too raw/rough to be technically evaluated but...goosebumps. We won't hear stuff like that again, and maybe that's exactly the charm

About the lyrics: I love Alcest, but it's funny how I can't understand a single word when Neige sings (I'm French). However, his lyrics are incredibly good. In the French black metal scene, bands try to sound "poetic", and it's sometimes a bit of a caricature. But Alcest are absolutely top-notch!

Instead of using the term "clean singing," can't we just use "singing" instead? Perhaps I'm overthinking this, but "clean singing" seems to imply that screaming/harsh vocals is also counted as singing. Except for blending the natural voice with some harsh vocals and singing with that combination, singing and screaming obviously sound very different to each other, and most people wouldn't confuse the two. If you read all of my little rant here, thank you for taking the time to do that.
