    The Fiat Dino road cars came to be because of Ferraris need to homologate a V6 engine for Formula 2 racing cars. In 1965 FIA had drawn up new rules, to be enacted for the 1967 season. F2 engines were required to have no more than six cylinders, and to be derived from a production engine, from a road car homologated in the GT class and produced in at least 500 examples within 12 months. Since a small manufacturer like Ferrari did not possess the production capacity to reach such quotas, an agreement was signed with Fiat and made public in 1965, Fiat would produce the 500 engines needed for the homologation.

  • @dino2400

    @dino2400

    3 жыл бұрын

    yes, this is true, but can I add. The 500 engines were of course built by Ferrari not Fiat. And there is a 3rd car on the scene: not only the Dino 246 (not Ferrari, but Dino. Since it is not a 12 cylinder, it could not be named Ferrari according Enzo) and the Fiat Dino, but also the Lancia Stratos has the very same engine. These three cars together were battling to get those 500 engines out.

    The 'Ferrari' Dino was never badged as a Ferrari, only as a Dino. Enzo Ferrari feared that this smaller, cheaper, car would devalue the brand so long associated with V12s. Some owners, miffed that the great unwashed might not realise how rich and cool they were, added 'Ferrari' badges and prancing horses later.

And don't Ferrari Dino's have Fiat written on the engine? Much to the annoyance of Ferrari owners. Nice video, that's some car collection.

    The Ferrari Dino 246GT, the Fiat Dino, and the Lancia Stratos all shared the same 2.4 liter V6. Horsepower was between 180 and 195(depending on vehicle). Ferrari is about to have a car with a V6 again (a turbo V6 in this case).

    When BMW gave - yes, gave - John Surtees one of these, he more-or-less gave it back to them, saying it was "anemically underpowered" if I recall correctly. They put the minions to work and gave it a bit more oomph. So all this slavish admiration for BMW's version of a Fiat 1200TV seems misplaced, but understandable in a world where Mercedes 190SL's are taken seriously...

    What Hoffman forgot to tell them what he really needed was mass production and not haute couture. For such a small series, it would've been impossible for BMW to make it any cheaper, all the cars are effectively hand built. If he had put in an order of ten thousand cars it would've been a different thing, and BMW could've productionalized it in a more rational way. Remember, BMW was on the brink of bankruptcy and couldn't afford to sell the cars at a loss.

They only had the big six cylinder and V8 "Baroque Engel" car in production, with a total run of less than twenty thousand. They also had the Isetta micro car, income from that made them able to produce the BMW 600 and 700 small cars, and those did compete on cost, the car being smaller than a Volkswagen. It was actually the small cars that saved their bacon, but only just so, until the Quandt family took over and injected enough funds to introduce the "Neue Classe" 1500.

In case you didn't know, Fiat was the company in charge of every italian car brand in the glory days of italian car manufacturing. Also some engine knowledge on your oh so favourite BMW would be great. If you are just not prepared for featuring real car history in a proper way, just stick with your mopars. I think the unknowledgeable one is you, Mr Ladd. If one accepts that the glory days of Italian car manufacturing were the 1950s and 1960s (maybe, a little bit of of the '70s, too), then FIAT, although by far the largest Italian car maker, was definitely not "in charge of every Italian car brand" at that time. You're probably basing your statement on the fact that FIAT bought 50% of Ferrari, and all of Lancia, but that was in 1969, the very last year of those glory days.
