Shelties were bred to be "reserved" towards strangers. This reservation is due to the fact that they were left by themselves on a small island, in the Shetlands, with a herd of sheep. Because they were/are such good herders they were often stolen. So they were bred to not go to anybody they don't know.

If something works to get the dog what they want, they'll keep doing it forever. The problem I see with your little buddy's case is that he's doing the boy-who-cried-wolf thing (or maybe the tiny-wolf-who-cried-murder) and if he's ACTUALLY hurt, you won't be able to tell easily. >_< Drama queens, the lot of 'em :D

Vanessa brought up a very peculiar and interesting 💭🤔 dilemma with high anxiety and stress over 😢when clipping the Quik. I understand you don't need or want to stress your pet further, 🙏🏼" however 🥺 i rather the quik become shorter over time than to have to constantly growing the nails out than trim at the groomers twice or three times a month. I'd dogs with longer nail issues and it's better and beneficial to get the quik trim and finished than to constantly wait 🫸🏼💬 it out
"Was that necessary?" "No, but I did it anyway."
I've had two Pomeranians and both of them were drama queens. One even acted like I was murdering him with a pinking shears when we were at group doggie training because we were practicing the sit command and the trainer reassured me that no, he wasn't being hurt because I tapped the base of his spine lightly. Rather, the I'm Being Murdered scream is the song of the Pom's people. Yet, my cousin's pom (raised with huskies) would yodel and scold but saved his screaming for things like not being fed by 5 pm.

Wow, he was cute but a handful. He turned out well, considering he was having a meltdown.
My dad had a mini Sheltie when my daughter was little. She kept showing up at his social services agency one January (in Minnesota) as a tiny puppy. Their office was attached to a junior high school. Their mail carrier knew of a house nearby that was probably a backyard breeder. Dad or one of his social workers brought her back three times and she kept returning in the freezing cold. They’d just lost their old Westie and my stepmother was only willing to keep her a few days. She crossed the bridge 14 years later. One of her quirks was that she worked desperately hard to herd my daughter and my nephew who were preschoolers when they were at Grandma and Grandpa’s house. She just couldn’t figure out why they wouldn’t herd. They further confused her when they’d get in her crate. She finally satisfied her need by herding the kitchen island. It always stayed right where she’d “put” it. She was funny and very sweet.
"It's okay, Buddy!" "It's not okay! I'm gonna find that one cat, and then you're done for, lady!"

What a handsome little man. I always have a difficult time watching super stressed and anxious dogs getting groomed so all the more kudos to you for always being a calm, solid rock for these little critters.
His floof is magnificant!
Teddy is very cute and very handsome! I love his coloring. Poor little stressed out guy. It's possible that exercising him before a groom would help him to be a little bit calmer. (It also may do nothing, but with dogs that tend to get anxious, it is always worth a try, since it won't hurt them). Vanessa was really good with him. ❤ She is so skilled at adapting to their tolerance level and stress level. When she was asking Teddy why he ate his bib, my imagination pretended that he denied it. I grew up with Shelties, my parents have had 4 of them. I have been considering getting a Pomsky, but this little cutie pie is making me re-think my choice-Sheltie-Pom?! Love this! I’ve never heard Shelties specifically getting a bad rep. They are herding dogs and need LOTS of exercise. My parents’ dogs have always been sweet and will give warning snaps but have never actually intended to bite anyone. They are very easily trained and, like so many other dogs, if their owner properly socializes them, exposing them to children and strangers, practices grooming steps at home like brushing, bath, and nails… they are some of the best dogs any family could ask for. It also helps when the stranger builds a bond with them like Vanessa did with Teddie. This channel continues to be my happy place.

I had a Sheltie/Border Collie cross as a teenager. She had been thrown out of the back of a moving car, was seriously injured, and rescued by an older couple. No, they don't need tons of excersize. I've owned 11 over 27 years. A good walk, playing fetch for 20 minutes or so, a run with a littermate around the fenced in yard, or a good Frisbee throw can help tire them out. My 3 daughters have grown up with Shelties and the dogs have never bit, bared teeth, nipped or growled.
Hey Vanessa! Great job with this stressed dude! He is adorable!!! I wanted to let you know that your dirty dog shampoo is a miracle! I had to give my Anatolian shepherd an impromptu bath yesterday when he rolled in his own dodo after it had rained. I only had to use an extremely small amount of the shampoo to get him squeaky clean and clean smelling again whereas with the shampoo we were using before i would have had to use 2-3 rounds of the stuff. It was incredible.
Well done, Teddy! He perked up at the end when outside/playtime got mentioned. :)
"Mild Cucumber" sounds more like "Wishful Thinking."
My Sheltie Pebbles hated being groomed. She didn't like being picked up either. You had to do everything a certain way, or it was not happening. Had her for 17and a half years. Miss her so much.

@@ShellyCline He didn't "miss her" or "bond" to her, it's really weird how much humans project what they want to see onto animals. Life sadly isn't a disney fairytale. More likely is that he saw an opportunity when she left to try and get away before she got back, and put everything he had into it. Which is also why he stopped when she returned. Very much the opposite of bonding or missing her, which requires... just so many leaps in logic of animal behaviour and Teddy's specific behaviour. Vanessa does great, but no, many of these animals want nothing to do with her or any groomers, and that clearly includes Teddy lol
@ShellyCline

@@Sarlat7 lolol. Look at you assuming I think life is like a Disney fairytale. You're hilarious. I didn't say I believed they had bonded. I was actually just helping OP to stress their point. But since we're talking about it now, I don't think the dog saw an opportunity to get it off. I think the dog was comforted by her presence and when she walked away it was "less comforted". That's my personal opinion. Not exactly a Disney fairy tale, but not the crap take you have either.

My pom was like this at the groomers, but just the groomers and nowhere else, and with no one else. He was normally a chronic barker too, but the moment he set foot on the property of the groomers, he just put on the brakes and started shaking. The funny part was the groomers' shop was located on our usual walk, so he was fine walking pass it. But the moment I'd turn towards the driveway of the place, he'd freeze in place and I had to pick him up to get him to go in. Meanwhile, going to the vet his tail was wagging and he was just fine.
What an adorable ball of floof. I just want to hug him and kiss him until he chills out.
