The Montana of Maine! Baxter State Park Fly Fishing

They say trout don't live in ugly places, and that statement is very true when it comes to exploring the wilds of Maine. Baxter State Park is a special place and trout are only part of the beauty. On this day I Fly Fish and explore Baxter State Park. MT Katahdin is truly an eastern mountain wonder.

Lifelong Mainer here. We indeed have some of the best remaining trout waters in the US. Brook trout specifically. Southern zone still has some wild and native Brookie pops but far more sparce than the North zone. Stocking is heavily relied on in the south zones. North has some very good trophy waters. (Sorry i can't reveal that though! hehe) I love to just pack up my gear, grab my gazette and topo maps and just head out and find new waters. (take note that we have a lot and a lot of laws and regulations on so many different waters and such. and wardens take it very seriously) in regards to why places don't allow dogs or other things is because people can't pick up after themselves and respect the nature and lands they are given privilege to adventure on. Far too many times i see tourists come here and just litter everywhere, damage things, disregard laws and regulations. 90% of land up here is privately owned. So what we have is a privilege and i wish more people would respect that. Cheers, tight lines and best of luck and thank you for respecting the land and taking out what you take in and for wetting your hands before handling trout.

Went to Baxter many times when working for years out of Bangor. It’s really beautiful. However, of all the places I’ve been, that region has the most amazing insects. The masses of mosquitoes would drive you mad. In the spring the black flies would kill you if they could. In the heat of summer the tiny no seeums and deer flies would put you into your car to get the hell out of there.

A couple hours to the west of Baxter, there's a body of water that's home to a small population of Arctic Charr. Maine is the only state in the lower 48 that has a native population of charr. Wadleigh pond is the name if I remember correctly and it's fly fishing only

The rules are in place for a reason. Governor Baxter set the rules with his deeds of trust. Domestic animals have never been allowed in the park. The park is self sufficient and doesn't cost the tax payers any money through taxes. Money is raised through camping fees, out of staters per day use fees, and a portion of the north end of the park is used for sustainable wood harvesting. The rules are in place and strictly adhered to as they should be to keep the park in its forever wild state. If you don't like the rules, you don't have to visit, but you are missing out on the most natural place you will ever find.

Cool video. Thanks for visiting. However, when you visit a place, put some respect on the name. It's Ka-Tah-Din not cat-a-dean. And your comment about dogs not being allowed is short sighted.
