the murder scene in "Psycho" with the high, discordant, violin tones while the cinematographer shoots with various angles, close-ups, freeze frames, and other techniques were utterly unique and innovative at the time and still manage to create a strange beauty to the scene, as horrifying as it is. It was a purely cinematic art that novels, television, and other mediums could not duplicate.

Creating explanations for Michael Myers’ evil is not only “pulling back the curtain,” it runs entirely counter to the entire point. He’s supposed to be the embodiment of evil, a supernatural force. There is no explanation for him. Carpenter intended it to be, in part, a very simple metaphor for evil in life - it can’t be reasoned with or killed. The fact that the neighborhood of Haddonfield is completely normal is exactly what makes it all work; everyone is innocent, minding their own business, while evil has arrived among them. They’re not responsible for bringing it there, either. We can relate because we’re ultimately aware that no matter how careful or good we are, we too will encounter evil, which is the nature of life itself. The fact that Zombie’s film had Loomis actually apologizing to Michael for “failing” him was a sacrilege!

Chris Alo, thank you! I fully agree about Michael Myers. The 1978 original was terrifying because this kid murders his sister for no reason at all and then 15 years later, breaks out of the asylum and goes on killing spree. No rhyme, no reason. THAT is scary to me. If you give him another sister or some other kind of backstory about a weird cult, it f*cks everything.

The Thing was one of the greatest remakes ever. So was the first Invasion of the Bodysnatchers remake. The first Black Christmas remake was terrible, didn't bother with the later version. The Suspiria remake was long and very different but I thought it was good.

The later version of black Christmas is probably the worst sequel ever made. It has nothing to do with the first black Christmas, first of all. Secondly, it’s woke nonsense. The bad guy(s) are all male misogynists at college in a cult of sorts who are hypnotized into becoming killers who target women. So, people are lurking around dressed up like the killers in scream and you realize it’s actually a bunch of killers not one. And the leader of the bad guys is a college professor who sounds like a caricature of Elliot Rodgers (at he serial killer who killed a bunch of people because women rejected him) if he instead found a cult and was teaching people how to be like him. And then all the women become empowered and take on the cult. Feminists in college probably thought it was a great idea, but it comes across as a caricature of male misogyny that is so obvious in its intent that no one but woke feminists would find anything redeeming about it, and it might be even too over the top form most of them. On top of thst its PG 13 so there is almost no gore. Why did name the movie Black Christmas? Thst original movie was not great, but this has almost nothing to even tie itself to the original. And that movie, while not great runs rings around the new movie. I was actually shocked at how bad the sequel was.

The combo of Rich, Chris and Pete never fails to entertain me, enlighten me and leave me with several good laughs. Chris proves he should be leading the Justice League with his decisions on team members needed (or not) for many missions - including the cat in the tree. Hilarious stuff here and a good discussion on remakes and those with none needed. Brilliant and hilarious comparison for the monster discussion going on. Hoping the Trio of Doom can keep giving us episodes when the concert world opens up everyone gets busier. But even if not, these episodes should be enjoyed by everyone. What made those "few" remakes such as The Thing/The Fly.. stand out is GOOD writing and clever directors attached to them. Nowdays, it's all about big studios controlling everything and either hiring hacks or newly hot independent directors who would have no saying whatsoever in the final product.

I'm not a horror movie person, but I love 'Carrie' (1976) because there's something so satisfying about a high school misfit taking revenge on her classmates that did her wrong. I don't like how they modernized the story with the 2013 remake by having the girls film Carrie on their phones when she gets her period and then the video gets shown on prom night. Though, I love the special effects on the prom scene where everyone dies, it was much more satisfying in the original film where Sissy Spacek's eyes are wide open and her face is stone-cold as she brutally murders these people with her telekinesis. She already reached a breaking point and was no longer thinking straight. Sissy fit the part of a girl who was considered an outcast. This is going to sound weird, but the main reason why I hate the remake is because Carrie (played by Chloë Grace Moretz) was prettier than Chris. It looked like Chloe could've been the pretty popular one, instead of that girl who played Chris. That's just me! The soundtrack also made a difference because the music in the 1976 film really added to the storytelling.

@@iansharp7422 I definitely love the original, 1968 "Night of the Living Dead" more than '79's "Dawn," or the '04 "Dawn." There is a stark, sober, terrifying quality to the '68 Romero classic that, to me, no other zombie movie has really gotten close to, much less surpassed (though I do think that "28 Days Later" is really, really good!). I know that for many people, '79's "Dawn" is their favorite Romero film, and their favorite zombie film, period, but I don't care for its comedic aspects too much. I generally want my zombie or zombie-esque movies to be seriously scary and unsettling, as with '68's "Night" and "28 Days Later." My positive impression of 04's "Dawn" probably has a lot to do with how I found it to be more of a genuine horror film than a comedy-horror movie like '79's "Dawn." "Them!" is my favorite bug movie too, though I do also love 1977's "Kingdom of the Spiders." William Shatner battles tarantulas, and it's actually done as a straight-faced, serious, horror movie, and not a horror-comedy! Almost unbelievably, it works, and works very well! I love it! :-)

There are a TON of new horror movies that are great. It's not like music Pete, where everything up until the early 1980's is listenable (which was during your youth). There are a lot of new horror movies that aren't sequels, or remakes, but original concepts, made by unknown director's, on lower budgets, that deserve recognition. I'm not going to list all of them, but I can if you're interested. Btw, I LOVE the classics too. I'm 43 years old, so not exactly a spring chicken myself.

The lush and grainy cinematography in Kill Bill 2 during the Mexico and Pai Mei scenes would be the prefect look and colour grade for the sub-tropical setting, not to mention improved dialog, acting, levity, and action. The Hitcher (I loved the original Rutger Hauer was amazing in the original ,but i love the remake with Sean Bean), Blasphemy i know but i love Friday the 13 th remake (but i never found Jason scary just silly, the remake he was actually terrifying basically a god of war)as you guys mentioned the Thing of course but its really not a remake more of a readapting no one ever says all the 3 musketeers are remakes, as it was based off a book. The new Invisible man is a masterpiece, Stephen Summers Mummy is way better ( of course I was 16 when it came out so it is my version I saw the hammer version and universal afterwards). I love Chris Allo he is my favorite guy ever but i disagree with him i love deeper characters. I loved the new Wrong Turn , I like the new Suspiria but its not better .

Roy Neary comes back on the Mothership, Dreyfus is still alive, would luv to see what Spielberg would do. If they could write an appropriate story, it could be great. I know it's biggest long shot of all long shots, but I would luv to see how they'd do the small spaceships plus they'd probably have some new ones! I know I'm dreaming here lol.

Chris Alo makes a great point at the start. I would take it a step further. The mystery/ brilliance of a great movie is when the viewer has to fill in his own blanks. I don’t know why Michael Myers was a bad seed when I watch the original. my imagination can be used. Don’t know WHY aliens want to replace humans in IOBS , it doesn’t matter. Better than the spirit of Halloween made him do it. Also like the Fthe13th and Elm Street remakes. Surprised that Chris liked the Friday remake. I agree with him. Interesting approach combining the first three movies. The Child's Play remake wasn't mentioned. I like the approach they took with that: a "smart doll" as opposed to a possessed doll. Although, Mark Hamill was underutilized. Also, the Last House On The Left remake is good. Tony Goldwyn makes the remake

"Jaws" was one of those cases where the movie was so much better than the book. I thought Benchley's book was awful...badly written, unlikeable characters, and on and on. Spielberg turned it into a great story with engaging and compelling characters.
