While I dislike Strauss as much as the next guy, it always struck me as odd that people think he’s an outlier in the gang. Every member of the gang killed and destroyed lives. Robbing a bank back then meant stealing the people’s cash, most of which was not insured. Not including the random people killed in the shootouts the gang has with towns. Strauss was a loan shark in a gang full of murderers. Think about Hamish’s cousin by marriage, we don’t know that guy at all. But we’re completely fine outright stealing his life’s savings. The truth is that all these people are guilty. It’s probably that Strauss is an ugly uncharasmatic character. I mean a high honor Arthur may have a sense of honor in defending his chosen family but he still ruins countless lives. I love Arthur and cry every time he dies, but let’s be honest with ourselves. If the Van Der Lind gang were real, we’d all want to see them swing.

It's funny how far people go to say Charles or any other person in the gang was good, they were all killers. None of them have high honor or are good people. People tend to only dislike the people the game makes you dislike.

@@Speltric well I would say there’s a definite hierarchy. I know Arthur and John both canonically kill plenty of innocent people, I’m not sure Charles or Kieren or even Hosea have. Charles definitely does seem to have a code of honor. He goes against Dutch and other members of the gang when they push him to do evil shit later in the game. Hosea seems to be a major moral compass for Dutch. But yeah characters like John and Arthur, while more noble and honorable than other members, definitely get the protagonist pass. They’re our stand in, and by extension, a version of us. Of course we’re going to excuse and ignore their faults. But like I said, if Arthur was a real guy, most of us would root for him to swing.

I greatly agree. Truly, the only innocent one in camp would be Jack. I also find it ironic how the Pinkertons are the "bad guys" in the story because they are the antagonists, but really, they are the "good guys" trying to bring down a dangerous gang, but we see it not that way because we are attached to the gang and the characters therein, and we forget most of them are thieves and murderers despite our attachment, especially Arthur/John, etc. Though the Pinkerton's methods can be questionable, the Pinkertons are doing society a favor bringing down the Van Der Linde gang; however, it is fun and unique being a part of the morally-grey bad-guys in this game, for that makes the story more complex and enriching.

Lmao IKR? Strauss lent money, and wanted it back with some extra for the favour. Arthur though…hoooh boy he has made quite a number of widows. Taking away the breadwinner in the family, making families desperate because he wanted 15 dollars and a nickel. Arthur’s only redeeming quality is that he understands how wrong he has lived his life. Strauss was just doing basic bank business with some threats to get money back. Arthur is a way, way worse human than Strauss. Arthur complains “they don’t won’t folks like us anymore” WELL MAYBE IF YOU DIDN'T ROB, MURDER AND SHOOT EVERYONE TRYNA PROTECT THEIR PROPERTY YOU WOULDN’T BE DESPISED, ARTHUR. That said though, Arthur is a fantastic main character.

Exactly! I think Arthur overreacts here - Arthur has done far worse things than Strauss, for think of all the hundreds of people Arthur has killed, all the widowed wives left behind, all the turmoil Arthur has left on society with robberies and other reprehensible activities. Additionaly, I think Arthur's reaction to Dutch choking the old woman in Guarma is another time Arthur overreacted. The story of this game has some inconsistencies that seem to contradict the characters.

@@cavman9883 for me, i think this was arthurs way of saving strauss because he knows the pinkertons will find them sooner or later and so kicking him out would mean he would get the chance to run without looking back, sadly, he still dies at the hands of the pinkertons

I completely forgot about that, but you are right - I could definitely see Arthur kicking out Strauss and just blaming it on the type of work Strauss does, so everyone in camp would just accept and understand that more than Arthur kicking him out because of the bad situation the gang is in, and using the cover-up of Strauss's work being bad is a good excuse. That would be clever on Arthur's part, and I certainly agree with you. Dutch, Javier, Bill, etc., would definitely freak out if Arthur said "Strauss, pack bags and leave because it ain't safe here no more in this gang.", and they would likely scold Arthur for doing that and tell him he doesn't have faith in Dutch, etc. Indeed, It definitely is sad Strauss got captured by the Pinkertons no matter what.
