The Moluccan Rusa | Mark V. Peterson Hunting

This week, Mark continues his hunt in Queensland, Australia. Mark is after an unfamiliar species, the Moluccan Rusa. As the scientific name suggests, it is a close relative of the Javan Rusa and can only be hunted in Australia. Mark has a few close calls with a giant stag. One encounter lands him 15 yards from his target stag, but Mark couldn’t stop him from going into the nearby thicket. With the light fading, the team gets aggressive and makes a move close the distance on a giant Moluccan Rusa.

Mark, great hunt but that is a Javan Rusa my friend. Moluccan are the smaller sub species. Mr Webb knows the difference, I don't understand why there was no correction from him.

Yeah, I know some outfitters offer "Moluccans" which are basically management Javan Rusa they want gone.
I'm curious about Sambar and Rusa hybrids in Australia. Sika and Red Deer hybrids have hunters in Great Britain and New Zealand upset. I found that they brought Manchurian Sika to Ukraine. At least they are the biggest Sika. Mostly Japanese Sika were the ones moved around most. Texas has some Dybrowski/Manchurian Sika too.

What do you want to know I hunt Rusa quite a bit? It really depends on where you hunt in Australia, deer hunting is open year round, no limits on bags or tags. In reality, this video looks like an outfit hunting and private land. That said there are monsters out there in State Forests in NSW.

@@willcaswell2341 Technically speaking Rusa are Mainland Sambar deer that got isolated on Islands when the ice age ended and and Indonesia stopped being a sub continent. They both displayed Island dwarfism becoming smaller than Mainland Asian Sambar. Sambar are the largest deer next to Moose. I wasn't making a statement just wondering if Sambar Rusa crosses would result in a single species as mixing continues. Another thing that could happen is hybrid vigor where you get a bigger animal than the parent species. What's happening in Australia is in effect two Sambars varieties that haven't been together since the last ice age. A uniquely Australian deer when fully blend. The same could happen in New Zealand with Wapiti, Sika and Red Deer becoming a single species with enough time and blending. Hog deer and Axis deer can blend but don't because of different behaviors. The same might apply to the others but in Scotland they are trying to eliminate Sika deer because they readily breed with Red Deer resulting in deer with inferior trophy antlers.

@@kendallkahl8725yeah but wouldn't you rather hunt three distinct species rather than one hybrid? Also, would it still be invasive aka open year round? You might have to contend with a shortened hunting season eventually, just like most other places... Idk!
