The Modern MAGIC of Donkey Kong Country Returns | GEEK CRITIQUE

Ойындар

In 2010, Retro Studios set out to prove that they could do for another fallen franchise what they'd done for Metroid. This would not be accomplished by just recapturing the original gameplay, but by taking those old concepts, evolving them with modern design principals, and making Donkey Kong Country magic again.

    "Find me another game released in the last 10 years that’s this bright, this animated, and this TOUGH." It wasn't out yet when I scripted this episode, but Cuphead is an excellent answer to that question, and a lot have you have rightly suggested it. However, I have to pretend like Cuphead doesn't exist until I'm finished with Other M, because I _know_ I'm going to love it, and I won't want to play anything else.

    Everyone gatekeeping about Cuphead's difficulty makes me never want to even look at it again. As someone who's been gaming since the NES, difficulty is either a completely neutral thing or a bad thing. I think it's because victory doesn't make me feel anything at all, but losing (and wasting time replaying) makes me frustrated. If something's too difficult, it doesn't make me feel nice to beat it, it makes me feel angry and frustrated that it was so difficult, even after I've beaten it. And everything needs to be deep dark rich colors, all websites need dark themes, etc. Bright colors are ruining anime, video games, and my eyes! We need a return to 90s anime color like Outlaw Star.

    La-Mulana's remake, released in 2007. While a fairly difficult 2D platformer, the true difficulty lies within the puzzles. I doubt that you could complete the game, let alone Hell Temple, without reaching for a strategy guide or asking others to lend their insight. Be sure to enable hard mode before defeating any guardians, for that extra kick to the backside and foot on the neck.

    I feel the same as the guy up at the top of the screen, the bananas from the volcano was a great shot to end on and better than tropical freezes flowers that is kinda dumb but the moon thing is just ridiculous. I like this series because they’ve found a gap with being about an ape with a tie that is in a beautiful world surrounded by realism and things that are also way out of our reach.

  • @harry426

    @@buzzytrombone4353 This doesn't really contradict what I said. I said that they are cartoony, but the level of "wackyness" in the original games is usually kept to a minimum. For exemple, you could compare the ending to Donkey Kong Country 2 and Returns. In DKC2, the game ends with K. Rool getting punched by Donkey Kong, falling down his Island and getting munched on by sharks. In Returns, Donkey Kong punches the moon (!), which falls down, knock the giant totem, which causes an eruption of bananas, which then propulses the moon back to its original spot. Both cartoony, but one is way more wacky than the other. Heck, even Crash Bandicoot (which has a somewhat similar style to the original DK trilogy) never got THIS wacky.

And give us options with different controls. Let the people who ported dkcr to 3ds do it. It would sale well because many who enjoyed dkcr missed tropical freeze. And together would be an amazing collection. If retro isn't gong to make the next one then whoever is needs to do the ports so they can familiarize themselves with exactly why they were amazing games.

    I love your work Josh, DKC Returns was a breath of fresh air for me in 2010. I was actually on my 2 year full time Church mission when this came out. While on my mission I couldn't play video games at all. I got home in November of 2010 and I heard all about this game and bought a Wii just for it. Luckily at that time, getting a used Wii was cheap and the one I got had several classic games downloaded on it. As for Gorilla Glacier, I don't think it exists at all in this version of Donkey Kong Island. Remember, Super Mario Galaxy came out in 2007, and the end of that game resulted in the whole Mario Universe being reset and rearranged, this would include Donkey Kong Island. It made sense for Retro to completely redesign the world of Donkey Kong Country. It's also worth noting that each boss fight ended with Donkey Kong punching each Tiki Tak leader off into the horizon. Remember also that the Bananas are "magic" and boost power. Throughout the adventure, Donkey Kong consumed 1000's of bananas, the trials he went through on his journey combined with his banana consumption could have powered him up to the point of being strong enough to hit the moon hard enough to knock it out of orbit. I've always enjoyed the ending of Returns even if it is totally absurd.

  • @GeekCritique

    @GeekCritique

    If Nintendo even has some semblance of a connected idea of what their "worlds" are supposed to be, that's probably closer it than this, but... My (by which I mean DK Vine's) headcanon has always been that DK Island is part of the "Rare Archipelago," which also includes Spiral Mountain, Timber's Island, Willow Woods, etc. Here's a mockup of the map: twitter.com/camreigle/status/610471893603368960/photo/1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw The Mushroom Kingdom is a separate dimension from all this, which DK can interact with via the Chest of Time, and... *sighs* Yeah, anyway, your idea is definitely much closer than this, haha. DK punching the moon based on BANANA POWER is a great explanation, but the execution itself still bugs me. Especially how it just PLONKS itself back up there.

    Fantastic video as always, TGC. I was so excited getting this game for Christmas a few years ago. I knew it wasn't mechanically similar to the Rare games with a few exceptions here and there, but it gave me everything I wanted out of a platformer in the 7th generation. Something even New Super Mario Bros. Wii failed to deliver: it gave me platforming with spectacle. Launching out of those barrels as the statues are about to fall, with cinematic camera angles capturing the few seconds of excitement. It's so good, and I heard it gets even better in the sequel. I've yet to play Tropical Freeze all the way through, but I've seen my friends play it and it looks like it continues delivering on the spectacular platforming we got a good taste of in Returns. Anyways, looking forward to the next video :D

    Ugh this review should have been Metroid Prime Hunters. But in all seriousness I have a lot to say about DKCR. As someone whose first console was the Wii (I'm not that young I just never got a console before that) this was one of the first non retro (retro as in old not the company) games that I played which was challenging from beginning to end. I remember first playing it in a Toys R Us kiosk and immediately wanted to buy it. By making me try so hard it got me very invested. I think of it as the game that transformed me from a casual Nintendo fan to who I am now. I disagree that the multiplayer in DKCR is better than the New Super Mario Bros series. The main reason is that in NSMB all the characters have the same abilities which can be combined in the multiplayer to pull off some really neat tricks. In DKCR everything is more controlled and as such the player playing as Diddy is going to have more fun than the player playing as Donkey. Diddy has a ranged attack with his peanuts and can fly while Donkey has nothing special. I remember my brother and I playing DKCR for the first time and me getting very upset cause I couldn't make many jumps without Diddy. After world 2 I played the rest of the game by myself. I'm surprised how invested you've always been on "DK lore" considering that I always assumed that the lore of the series was always like Kirby lore where while they will reference previously established story elements (such as the evil computer in Planet Robobot being a Nova from Superstar) it really doesn't matter to the overall game. That's why I don't think they made a big deal about the mountain being destroyed in lava, they didn't think anyone would care/remember. Finally I don't see what is wrong with the ending with the moon. I mean yeah it is over the top but so is the whole series. If something as ridiculous as the DK rap is allowed to exist then I see no problem with Donkey Kong punching the moon.

  • @GeekCritique

    @GeekCritique

    Interesting perspective, thanks! I don't actually mind the characters having differences in multiplayer. Player 2 is going to have an _easier_ time, sure, but since I was pretty much always the one who had more experience in the game, I didn't mind the handicap. The problem with the NSMB games' multiplayer was the fact that you could so easily, and accidentally, interfere with other players. Since you could collide with each other, it was very easy to mess each other up without meaning to. This was somewhat manageable with two players, but any more than that and it was just a chaotic mess.

    After watching this, I think i'm going to go back and give this series another go. My main problem with this and tropical freeze was that "it wasn't my Donkey Kong Country". Dk handled differently, Diddy was a powerup, and rolling didn't keep the flow of a level going. Until now, I've never thought of this as its own series, but more of a DKC4 and I guess that's why it never really clicked with me. Great video Josh

    The Donkey Kong Country trilogy, especially 2, was very important to me as a child. I put a lot of hours into scouring every level for bonus levels and DK coins. They remain some of my favorite platformers of all time. I never had a Wii so one of the first games I got for my 3DS was DKCR. If I remember correctly, the first hazard in the first level is two enemies with a gap between them. I tried rolling through them, as you do in DKC games. But I took damage from that second enemy because the roll works differently. I never got used to it. It seemed like I was doing something wrong, enemies were placed such that it looked like you should just roll right through them. I lost a lot of lives that way. The small screen and the awkwardness holding down a trigger to cling probably made it a lot harder too. I really wanted to like this game, but I just got so frustrated with it. The movement never felt right. I died over 40 times on some of those rocket barrel levels. Now that I have a Wii U, I'm not sure if I want to give Tropical Freeze a chance.

    Well, I have checked your DK videos as promised and now with it being released checked this one out. I am still not too huge on the donkey kong country games myself, just a prefference. However, you really bring it to the table in a really excited way that I can not help but feel excied myself as well. The game absolutely got a lot of charm to it and absolutely looked like it had great game design to it. Oh look at that, you also show the ending, and DK..is.... punching the.......moon?...... wat? Still though, as a diehard metroid fan I NEVER was angry at retro for taking on donkey kong, it's very closeminded to feel that a game company can only do ONE franchise. Kinda the same with me, I LOOOVE Armored Core, but I never fault FROM SOFTWARE for doing so much with Dark souls. Anyway, I am very happy I actually decided to check this all out from you.

    Honestly, if I may influence, if you did indeed like the prime 2 review of his, try out prime 2, I feel like prime 3 might be a disconnect to you as you say you suck at FPS controls. However, prime 2 is more a first person adventure where you don't need sharp skills too much.

    8:10 If I remember correctly, the timing isn't strict, you just have to re-press the jump button after each bounce to jump higher off of enemies. So you do the bounce, then release and hold the jump button again until you bounce off the next enemy.

    i remember seeing commercials for returns and being so exited because i loved the origonal games. i got it for my birthday and then i started to play for hours my favorite part of this game was that i was so young when i played and overcoming every single stage, collecting everything was probably the most satisfying thing i have ever experience from how difficult it was for me, i remember i kept on dyeing over and over on certain levels and then completing and finishing them was amazeing, the closest i have to this feeling was defeating a boss in dark souls, it gets your blood running, i love this game and i hope there will be more like this and tropical freeze in the future

    After watching this video, I realized that DKC Returns is actually very similar to Rayman Origins / Legends. Both have very similar controls especially with the mechanic of keeping momentum from a roll (or spin in Rayman) into a jump, both games have optional collectibles and areas hidden in levels for completionists, and both were retro revivals that released around the same time

    I teared up rewatching this video and hearing DK Island Swing. God, I love this series so much. Dinosaur Planet may be my favorite individual game, but DK has to be my favorite _franchise_. It's given me such deep nostalgia for memories that in all honesty aren't even two years old yet, but are every bit as overpowering as those of someone who played the first game in '94 when they were 7. As always, your excellent narration style and writing don't hurt, either. I can't believe I don't yet have a DKVine account, I should really get on that. As someone who really doesn't care for the Switch, my journey may end at Tropical Freeze until I get a beefier PC, but all the same I love these games to death and only being able to play five games rather than potentially six is a really, really minor "problem". Hell, I'm pretty sure they haven't even announced a DKC 6 yet anyway, but the Switch port of Tropical Freeze is a promising sign.

    I remember those rocket barrel stages being so hard when I played this game as a kid and basically the only ones I used the super guide for. As such I found it strange that when I revisited this game a few months ago I actually beat most of them (with the exception of crowded cavern due to that massive bat at the end) in only a few tries with all the kong letters. Something about figuring out those controls makes them not only manageable but honestly really fun. The fact that I absolutely love the music that plays during them certainly helps as well.

    This was a really interesting review. I've liked watching your history of the Donkey Kong series from episode to episode, so I was happy that you posted this video. I haven't paid attention to all of the history surrounding the games, so it was neat to hear about the details from you and how it affected the games. For instance, I wasn't aware of the rumors that Crocodile Cauldron's levels were originally going to be for the first game. I didn't realize that the Wii shaking mechanism would be a big issue for players, but then again I was like you and I'd already gotten used to it. The blowing mechanic, though, I agree was a little strange. I didn't really notice the whole way they locked you onto a single Kong in 1-player mode, since I played the whole game alongside my Mom. So we didn't really notice the lack of buddy barrels. I'm glad that they made a real two-player mode for the series, but if I did play it on my own it might have been a little grating to really only control one Kong. I agree that we should have had more animal buddies and more opportunities to use them: we loved riding Rambi whenever we found him, and it was a shame that he wasn't there more. Good point about it being a missed opportunity to not have included elements of Gorilla Glacier in the last world. It would have especially served in hindsight as a nice parallel/foil to the next game. If I'd designed the last world, at a rough sketch, here's what I would have done: 8-1: A cave level that's a mix of Torchlight Trouble and Slipside Ride. The cavern is pitch black and the only light comes from the flames of the lava - and you'd better not touch it. You cross the various chasms using the 1-way slip ropes. At the end of the level, you come out into a fiery wasteland where the last of the snow is melting - and in the landscape you can see the treetop village of Rope Bridge Rumble burning up. 8-2: You make your way over the last melting remnants of Gorilla Glacier's ice fields as things get hotter and hotter. Hopefully you can avoid slipping into the lava, while still sliding fast enough to jump before the glaciers melt at your feet. 8-3: This is assuming that they'd also brought back the swimming mechanic by this point too. Anyway, the melting ice from the glacier has formed a large lake that you'll need to cross. But every now and then the lava will heat up the water, so you'll need to time things so you don't get boiled alive. Sort of like Lava Lagoon. 8-4: Smokey Peak, as I liked that level a lot. 8-5: A geyser-themed level where you need to ride lifts powered by geysers, while also dealing with smaller geysers that hurt you as well as huge ones that large boulders at you. 8-6: You enter the castle/temple made by the tiki spirits. Given how we see that massive tower, it would have been neat to explore it. Something to sort of evoke K. Rool's Keep. 8-7: The rocket barrel level, now in the style of the first part of the Tiki Tong boss level where you have to fly up to where Tiki Tong is. That's my rough vision of what should have happened, at least. Anyway, I'm really happy that you did this review, and I'm excited to see your thoughts on Tropical Freeze.

    It was in no way intentional by Retro, but the use of mandatory motion controls for Returns almost makes Returns feel like the last hallmark of the 2000s era for DK. For a decade the franchise had been dominated by various wacky control schemes and gimmick genres; the sizzle of the novelty gameplay replacing the previous surface level attraction of the full motion graphics. In that sense the Wii motion for certain moves essentially turns DKCR into the estuary of the franchise, transitioning from the period of bongos controllers back into the tight platformer gameplay that defined it back in the 90s. (I still prefer the 3DS version for sheer ease of use, but its interesting to think about at least).
