Donkey Kong Country 3: Identity Crisis - Donkey Kong Dissection

Ойын-сауық

Donkey Kong Dissection returns with the final installment of the original DKC trilogy. Dixie nabs the starring role this time, but is that enough of a shake-up to inject new life into an aging series for an aging console? Well, hey, at least Kiddy is there to save it!

I liked the DKVine headcanon that K.Rool had to bother with KAOS as a proxy because the Kremlings had kicked him out from leadership due to their island being sunk because of his feud with DK, and hence him rebuilding in an area that had zero Kremling bosses in it. Hence builds KAOS and to give him any semblance of intelligence beyond mere programming, functions from the brains of DK and Diddy. Like MechaGodzilla being controlled by what was left of King Ghidorah's third head.

Had that thought myself while rewatching this today. They’ve already established time progression exists to some degree given Cranky Kong, so nothing would stop them from using a slightly older Kiddy in 64. Unless Rare felt he was too disliked to be worth keeping as a major character.

This game feels like a victory lap where the top at Rare was shifting to the 64 and basically told everyone on the ground OK you get to make one more game on this engine so just go nuts and feel free to do everything you always wanted to try and do. The end result is all over the place but it's kind of by design as they were free to experiment.

Funny how the GBA port essentially reworked Cranky's role as he got a new martial arts training location that has a new minigame needed for a banana bird when reaching a high enough score. He says that he's doing all this training to become the star in a game after a long while... a throwaway line that eventually pays off in Tropical Freeze when he becomes playable.

This is a very thorough breakdown of one of my favorite games. Well done! I really dig most of the stages and their aesthetics, as well as the trading quests. DKC3 is certainly a step up from DKC1, given how it uses DKC2 as a foundation. One thing I should mention that most people don’t bring up is that a good many of the stage gimmicks in DKC3 are just a lot of one particular enemy appearing the stage. Bazza’s Blockade, Swoopy Salvo, Fire-Ball Frenzy, Lemguin Lunge, Tyrant Twin Tussle, and Blazing Bazukas are good examples, though there are some others that layer another gimmick overtop it (Kreeping Klasps, Crevice Creepers, and Buzzer Barrage come to mind). DKC1 and 2 were no strangers to this design (Reptile Rumble, Vulture Culture, Clam City, Orang-utan Gang; Lockjaw’s Locker, Kannon’s Klaim, Mudhole Marsh, Hornet Hole). People often label every stage in DKC3 as gimmicky while ignoring that fact, which feels wrong to me. DKC3 certainly has its share of convoluted gimmicks, but many are just the same enemy onslaughts the previous games relished.

I disagree regarding Kiddie: I believe DKC3 should have been Dixie and Donkey. Kiddie is a complete non character and a charisma black hole. Literally the only reason he exists is to substitute Donkey, but the thing is that they didn't need to do that, cause Dixie had a contextual reason to be the main character, the fact that her boyfriend is missing, and of course Donkey would tag along to help her.

My experience with Donkey Kong Country 3 is mildly spoiled. See, I couldn't just buy games back when it first came out, and so my parents would simply let me rent 1 game each weekend. DKC3 was apparently rare due to being a late SNES title, and so the rental store nearest to my home that carried it only had 1 copy of the game. So sometimes it was available that weekend, sometimes it was not. It wasn't an unpopular choice to rent, that's for certain, as I think I only ever got to rent it about 5 times. This is because, eventually, some other customer wanted that rented game all to themselves. However, I guess they didn't want to get on bad terms with the store, so they had the nasty idea of taking the labels off that one DKC3 cartridge and putting them onto a DKC1 cartridge before they had to give it back. Thus, they gave away their DKC1 cartridge, disguised as "DKC3", and kept the rental store's DKC3 all to themselves, presumably without any labels on the cartridge left, I guess. Thus, when I next rented "DKC3", I ended up just renting another DKC1 game (Which I already had). I was so livid I got tricked into spending 5$ on a game I already had, I never bothered renting the game (or even from that store itself) ever again. I wouldn't get another chance to play DKC3 until years later, by which point it was too late for it to fit into the "quality SNES game nostalgia zone" DKC1 and DKC2 had comfortably settled into my mind. A shame, as I know it could have gotten in there easily if it was just more easily available in my area.

Another great look at a game. Bloody good work once more, I love the unique presentation these kind of videos have, they're different from most others I've looked at here on youtube. I saw the point of saves costing money in dkc2 was to give banana coins more worth. You now have something to spend the currency you so commonly come across on something else. The bigger problem with the save system charging you is just that for whatever ungodly reason, the game doesn't save them OR lives when you reload a save, so it just turns into a very occasionally roadblock to maintain your progress if you're not someone who'll binge the game everything you play. It's pretty easy to get 2 measly coins to save again I'd say, but they definitely should've been saved when starting the game again, it'd make saving, both cranky and wrinkly's advice nad the bonus game shows much more enticing to try at all.

This was such a fun watch! It's always great to see a well-put, highly sophisticated, and detailed introspectives of one of the best video game series'. Donkey Kong Country had heart put into it, and even though it was before my time (I personally grew up with DKC Returns on the Nintendo Wii and I have fond memories of that, and the subsequent DKC Tropical Freeze which thankfully maintained the same quality to an absolutely excellent degree). I respect the history and creative process around it. I hope Lance covers those games if this Donkey Kong Retrospective continues, I REALLY would love the hear your thoughts, on DK64 someday, man. As far as I know, it's rather controversial in the litter, it can be rather dark with the implications of K. Rool's depression and deep rage, newcomer Lanky Kong and Chunky Kong, as well as, Wrinkly Kong's fate. The DK lore is an interesting one to follow to say the least, and as a video game franchise has always been one of my personal favorites along with Mario, Sonic, Crash Bandicoot, and Star Fox for the compelling characters and settings. Anyways, I look forward to more, I enjoyed all 3 parts.

*Longest Mistare video yet* Another excellent game review! I like how you analyze and comment on the aspects of the games, story, gameplay, characters, etc. I also think that the game does not take advantage of that aspect of animal experiments. Lately I've been thinking that it would have been great if after beating Baron K. Roolenstein for the first time, the game gave you the option to play with all four playable Kongs from the trilogy. Another curious thing is how in the DKC3 commercial they try to hide the fact that Dixie is the protagonist but in Tropical Freeze they were much more open with her return to the saga.

Regarding to DK3 not making the cut for DK Classics, it wouldn't fit. The earliest NES carts could hold either 16 or 32 kb PRoGram ROM and 8kb CHaRacter ROM. If you needed more than that the cartridge would need an additional chip known as a mapper which had the job to switch out which section of 32kb PRG ROM and 8kb CHR ROM was visible to the console. Both DK and DK Jr used 16 kb PRG ROM, so when combined they both fit into the 32kb space visible to the console allowing a simpler mapper to be used, which only switched between different pages of CHR ROM. This of course meant Donkey Kong 3 had to be left out, just like Kiddy Kong has been left out of Donkey Kong games after DKC3 and DKL3

I’m a little older than you, so DKC hit the middle of my youthful ‘sweet spot’. DKC2 landed perfectly towards the end of said sweet spot. While I remember asking for DK3 the Christmas it came out (didn’t get it that year though-took about three more years before I got my hands on it), I wasn’t as excited for it as I was with the other two. Honestly, it was the baby. I just don’t like babies as protagonists. It set the tone and made the game seem more juvenile. If it had come out after DKC it might not have been so jarring, but as you said in the DK2 introspective, the Kong Quest went a little darker and stronger thematically. Had the third entry maintained that or even gone a little further in that direction, I might have been okay with it. But baby on the box just said, “Made for (very young) kids!” to me, and the presentation was even softer than DKC. Heck, just look at the Game Over screens. First game, DK and Diddy are battered and beaten. Second game, Diddy and Dixie are locked in a cage or cell. Third game, Dixie and Kiddy are in…a playpen? C’mon now! It does do a lot of things well, and I liked the level aesthetics a lot. I’m glad you were able to highlight what the game does well, because it does deserve some love. That said, the needlessly komplex kollecting made it bloated and tedious, the lack of a theme made it meandering, the lack of a distinct villainous plot/hero’s journey made it pointless, and the lack of a solid second hurt the overall presentation and dynamic. Heck, they could have made Funky the other Kong and it would have worked a lot better. I agree that brining Donkey back would have upstaged Dixie and ruined the progression…but the choice to make that ‘progression’ a baby was poorly conceived. The fact that they named him ‘Kiddy’ should have been a creative red flag. He’s gonna grow up, ya’ll. If you can’t give him a legit name that’ll age with him, then maybe he’s not right for the part. I think the way the end of the levels are handled punctuates the difference. In DK2, we get a very poignant, energetic celebration from one of the Kongs. In DK3, we get a tiny flagpole and the musical equivalent of a pat on the head. The flagpole could have worked, but it needed to be a Mario flagpole. Give it some height. Have the Kongs do some nifty climb animation and really hoist that banner with authority. It’s always a balance, trying to age a property with its audience. Do you make the next game a little more mature to age with the kids who played the earlier iterations, or do you make each installment targeted towards a specific age group and hope that fans of the earlier games will return out of a love of the series? I can appreciate either approach, and I think DK2 managed to do both. But DK3 seemed to be aimed at an audience even younger than the original. I eventually got around to playing it, found it largely forgettable, and probably won’t play it again. But that makes me thankful for this video, as I get to appreciate it by proxy. Cheers!

Well, good luck! lol I reckon you're going for full completion, so it's a good thing that this is only an annual series, so you can pace yourself with that game. It's definitely a test of patience.

I love the DKC trilogy, and DKC3 has a especial place in my heart. From an objective point of view, it is a little rough around the edges, but that is the point, to be different and not a rehash. I think that DKC4 would have been the pinnacle of the series. Hear me out: 1- Surely it would have been the return of DK (an improved one). 2- The idea of the open map would have been to remain. 3- The pace would have been faster and more fluid. 4- The platforming would have been more similar to DKC2. 5- DKC3's crazy ideas (gimmicks) would have finally landed. 7- The graphics (SNES) would have looked astonishing. 6- And yes, I think that David Wise would been in there. 7- You tell me. DKC3 showed us what the SNES is capable of doing, and with all its flaws and the lack of affection that its haters have for it due to the lack of nostalgia, it is one of the best games on the console and it has nothing to envy the first two. If you are a real gamer, play it, if not, go and hate it.

I'm gonna watch this later but I'm a bit anxious on doing so not gonna lie, bcs I played DKC3 for the first time recently and thought it was OK ,like most people do, but I started to really REALLY love it after playing the GBA version that has a lot of quality of life improviments and a great redone OST that gives the game a lot more personalitty BUT I do know you review stuff in order of release so I don't expect that version being brought up and that's ok! But I know I'll prob reach a part of the video where I'm gonna be bitting the walls going "B- but I like that graaahhhhh" or "That is fixed on the GBA version graaaa" Anyway I loved the other two videos lol and I'm not here to hear my opinions repeated back to me lol can't wait to put this on

55:04 "Wise is out, and Novakovic is back in. Look, I am sad that my favorite Donkey Kong composer did not work on this game." Actually, David Wise did a handful of songs: 1. Dixie Beat (title) 2. Crazy Calypso (file select) 3. Bonus Time 4. Bonus Win 5. Bonus Lose 6. Wrinkly's Save Cave (Wrinkly's Save Cave 1) 7. Get Fit A-Go-Go (Wrinkly's Save Cave 2) 8. Wrinkly 64 (Wrinkly's Save Cave 3) 9. Brothers Bear 10. Brothers Bear Blues (Blue variant) 11. Invincible Stars There are some caveats to this, though, because the bonus results themes are not only mere jingles but identical compositions to the last game but with different instruments, the invincibility theme is ripped straight from DKC2, and the downcast Brothers Bear theme is just the normal theme slowed and pitched down, so Wise really only composed 7 songs for this game.

DKC3 was the second game I ever owned after Super Mario All-Stars Plus Super Mario World, but I never realized the file select screen was a VCR until you mentioned it in this video. Regarding the subtitle, strikes me as weird they went with Double Trouble instead of Triple Trouble, might not have flowed any better, but at least there's a 3 pun in there. Never realized the collectibles had to be completed in a set order, perhaps because the player is collecting all three throughout the game(You can even get the first Banana Bird before entering the first world). DKC3 is actually my favorite of the Trilogy, though perhaps my inability to get into DKC1 and 2 is tied to only ever trying to play them on an emulator and a Keyboard kind of sucking for games designed for a gamepad.

I won't stand for this Return of the Jedi slander! The Second Death Star isn't that important to the actual main narrative of the movie, Luke and Vader's arcs, it's really just a B plot, what matters is what's going on inside in the throne room. Not to mention the battle is completely visually distinct (no trench run with small fighters, instead it's a huge fleet battle) so it's hardly a retread of ANH, the only thing that's similar is the planet destroying capability and fact that it's called a "Death Star". And what does go on in that throne room is the most important sequence in the trilogy. I admit that Luke and Leia being related is a twist that doesn't go much of anywhere, but consider this: without RotJ to "go somewhere" with the "I am your father" twist, that twist in Empire would end up just as useless. It's shocking, but what's the point? The point is that Luke refuses to kill his own father and is convinced good remains in him yadda yadda this ain't Star Wars Plot Synopsis you get my point. None of that is in Empire, JEDI has to do it. Yeah the movie starts a little unfocused and doesn't nail every beat, but in the way that actually matters, determining AND resolving the arcs of our protagonist and our antagonist, Jedi not only sticks the LANDING of the trilogy-wide story, but is the peak of it all. The unmasking scene is the emotional height of the franchise. What SW fan doesn't get full body chills when Luke gives into his rage against Vader? The back half of this movie is perfection, it's more than enough to offset the shaky elements. Plus it has the best space battle AND best lightsaber duel in any of the movies i will not be taking questions. Okay I'm gonna keep listening to you talk about Donkey Kong now.

Agree. And the look of the unfinished Death Star made it look even more sinister, almost skull-like. The entire third act switches between the three battles (saber duel, fighter dogfights, commando assault), and presents the best version of each. The dogfights are fast and far more complex than ANH, the stop-motion of the Endor battle is the most fluid and seamless implementation of the craft, and though the duel now looks less impressive compared to some of the fights in the prequels (which tended to go long and were fraught with way too much razzle dazzle), it was far better than ANH’s geriatric showdown, and more even than ESB’s beatdown. Ewoks could have more/less if the Rebels had just trained them how to use blasters. Ultimately they were an ugly combo of merchandising fixation, budgetary limitations and shoehorning in a socio-political theme where it didn’t need to be. But as you said, the big payoff was the emotional resonance of Luke and Vader’s showdown, punctuated by my favorite ~45 second bit of score. ESB is far more even with better writing and fewer lumps…although it is mostly a space rom-com bookended by two impressive battle sequences. (Though to be fair, as much praise as the Hoth battle gets…it wasn’t much of a battle. The Rebellion’s ground forces do squat except get massacred, and the speeders foolishly continued to approach the walkers from the front.) RotJ makes a lot of strange narrative decisions, but the third act is non-stop action with an intense payoff. Can’t ask for too much more. Had Lucas still had his wife/editor and producer, we may have gotten a stronger finish. But he was a very different man from who he was during the first two films, and RotJ was starting to give us a glimpse of the decline that would fully manifest in projects like Indy 4 and the prequels.

  • @elijahpadilla5083

    @elijahpadilla5083

Hell, I'd argue that, in terms of doing something for the trilogy, ESB is actually the _weakest_ point in the original Star Wars trilogy, and leads to my wildly unpopular take that the middle movie of each trilogy is the weakest one. Think about it. The Vader twist not withstanding, what does Empire _do_ for Star Wars? Spends half its runtime on the Han/Leia romance that thoroughly drags. The Hoth intro scene resets some of the character development from ANH for no reason. The Yoda training is cool, explicitly unfinished, and gets completed offscreen. Lando and Fett do a lot more in now non-canon side media than in the films. It expands the world, sure, but any film could have. It drags its feet through its runtime for one twist and starting two arcs that'll basically already be finished when the next film starts.

I've done some thinking and I think DKC3 might be my favorite in the trilogy, though all of the installments are phenomenal. It almost seemed like DKC1 introduced the idea of what a DKC game should be, DKC2 ironed out the kinks and perfected the process, and because the process was perfected, DKC3 could be this grander (via the world map), more off-the-wall (via the level gimmicks) finale to both DKC and tge SNES as a whole.

I'd like to say that DKC3 isn't more silly than 1 and 2, 1 is K Rool being a silly pirate stealing DK's bananas, then the 2nd one he has DK tied up in a plane after dressing all his homies up as pirate ending with K Rool being uppercutted out in a silly fashion, and 3 has a fake out boss which is pretty cool but then has a meh ending scene but it's not anymore silly or unbelievable than the first 2. DKC3 just has Dixie going looking for her friends so of course she's not in a panic until the game sorta becomes a bit dark with the factory and lost world. As a kid, the lost world was pretty dark (not as dark as 2), with the lava and music change.
