As a former nat exp driver in the early noughties on the Cromer run I used to love the January time of year when quite often I would leave VCS with passengers numbering 0 or no more than 10 who all got off at Mildenhall air base. It’s the best job in the world, even in my crippled state now I still catch the clock and think I’d just be leaving so and so now. Every day was a true adventure, with several hours off in the capital to do what ever you wanted, and on the 6pm out of VCS coming out over Southwark bridge or going straight down the embankment and through Limehouse tunnel to come up to Stratford broadway. And yes even with no passengers I used to carry out the service until I was told to stop running like that. Most days we had sort of sub 20s. However in the summer it could get manic with people even to the point where I had 2 dupes (duplicates) the idea was they would run with you on the service (which I concluded was stupid) so I had 1 run to Sheringham and Cromer one to Swaffham and Fakenham and any points in between the 2 destinations then I would run the service to time (the other coaches weren’t restricted to the time guide) getting to Cromer at 22.15 more or less. Can you tell I loved it.

My late father shouting out to passengers at 13:50. Interestingly enough, the BBC filmed that segment for the business programme ‘The Money Programme’ which I think used to go out on a Sunday evening back in the day. The article was actually about the railways but somehow got compared to express coach travel. My father took great joy telling people he’d featured on The Money Programme but stopped short of buying a bowler hat….

I was walking an injured friends’ dog along Highcliffe on Sea high st & as said dog took one of many leaks against the shop fronts I found myself reading a coach company window advertising day outs or breaks to places miles away for 30 or 40 quid. I haven’t been on a coach for decades - probably since Stonehenge festival in 1984 but I began to fancy the idea of not having to drive myself for at least a day..When I was a kid our region had a company called Excelsior based in Bournemouth which also had a depot in the local town 17 miles to the east 😁👍

I never travel by coach, mainly due to being a railwayman since I left school, so having cheap/free rail travel. But it did make me think, how I've been on coaches throughout my life. From school trips and outings/holidays with parents and friends in the 70's and 80's and now through to the current day and our yearly trip to Goodwood Races. Definitely the comradery can't be beaten. But I guess modern day technology, such as wifi, tablets, wireless earbuds etc, there's not such a togetherness.

🌍🏕🌏🐕 I took a coach from Victoria to Malaga, I enjoyed it way more than flying, first the ferry was relaxing then the coach stopped every few hours at a bar/ restaurant with real food and drinks at normal prices, it took 40 hours more or less but with no waiting at airports etc it felt much more fluid, mind you there was only half a dozen passengers which no doubt helped the trip ...

I went on one in about 1970 from Hartlepool to London as a toddler.i'd guess that it must have been operated by United.jump forward to 2021 hard to see how both Megabus and National Express can survive the coronavirus my money is on National Express being the older former state owned incumbent.

Interesting documentary. I cannot agree with Quentin Willson though. The fact a coach can take 50+ passengers does not result in 50 less car journeys, as he well knows. The problem with all forms of public transport in the UK, will never change. A bus, coach, train or plane will easily and cheaply convey a large number of people from one city to another. The real issue is, how to get that large number of people from their home to the bus station, railway station or airport etc etc. My regular commute from Blackpool to Manchester, takes me 70 minutes by car. If I had to make my way to my local railway station, that would take me 40 minutes alone, before the train journey of 80 minutes ( not allowing for a bus replacement, due to engineering works or cancellations etc) and then a 30 min journey to my workplace. Obviously, the same again on the return journey. Why would anybody, more than double their travelling time and put themselves in the wet and cold and at the mercy of unreliable public transport? In my car, my working day is 11hrs, by public transport it would be at least 13.5hrs, that is why people use cars. Until local public transport takes people where they need to go, quickly, cheaply and on a constant, regular reliable basis, the car is here to stay, unfortunately.

Why any fool would have a 70 minute car commute baffles me. Move house. In addition if it would take you 40 minutes to get to the train station in Blackpool (which has three of them) then it would appear you don’t actually live in Blackpool but in the middle of nowhere. I live a three minute cycle from work.
