The Dark Side extended the low end down to 40 hz, the Bright Side to 50hz. A 10 hz difference in bass is huge. Whole different bottom end.

Thank you for this comment/information. The low-bass frequency of "This is Home" is pushing my speakers to the max even at mid-level volume. I'm running a 70's vintage setup, 70 wpc amp driving 100w Advent Large speakers and they sound like they're going to burst. They handle strong bass well in nearly every other case. I have to turn the "Loudness" feature off to play I/O, and not push the volume past 4.

Well! That was really interesting. I would put my resume that way: The bright mix is more balanced, but the dark mix has more character. There are some parts I like more in the dark mix, even though you said its not working as well as the bright mix, but there's a way, that some part spring into your face with the dark mix. Thank you so much for this video!

Vocals sound more focused on the dark mix which I prefer Also I find the bright mix a little too harsh and would cause more ear fatigue to me I kept thinking that a balance between the two would be ideal

The blanket thing on Tchad's mixes is because he lowpasses almost everything @18khz with the uad 1081. It pushes everything back. His taste is better than most but I think he maybe uses a little too much digital processing

Nice video. But... wow. What a rabbit hole to go down. I think I understand why the release took so long and Gabriel's expression on the album cover now. "Oy Vey!"

The ultra smooth 4khz of the brighter mix really gives the listener the best opportunity to appreciate the whole musical experience. The brighter mix would no doubt sound more consistent across the endless devices and appliances but I can appreciate the darker mix where the signature of the mix engineer is much more overstated. Spike Stent and Cenzo Townsend are the two engineers I would have chosen to mix this material. To me, it’s far out of Blake’s wheelhouse considering his mixes are always so defined by his persistent signature regardless of the material.

Tchad has a history of mixing Gabriel’s material. I find his more aggressive mixes to be quite challenging but in some cases more suited to the material. This album is a little ‘lower paced’ than the previous album and Stent’s approach is more suited for songs that can ‘breathe’ a little more.

I don't like both of 'em much, but I must admit it must have been hell to mix them. It's like trying to mix three different songs into one. So maybe the music and arrangement is what turns me off. Anyway, I much prefer modern mix/masters like Arctic Monkeys "Sculptures of Anything Goes", Chromeo's "Words With You", Alabama Shakes "Give Me All Your Love" or Prince's "20Ten" album (if you like it hot).

So the Dark Side mix is bright and the Bright Side mix is darker. The Dark side sounds poppy and the Bright Side more 'alternative' or 'arty'. It would be interesting to hear Gabriel's' thinking behind releasing two versions and paying two very expensive mixers to mix them.

It looks to me like one of those concept ideas that started very compulsively and kinda became its own thing as the two engineers “did their thing”. It’s more about the process rather than the result and the result for us is or can be a choice. Or even just two ways of hearing the same thing.

No Rules. Stattdessen voll auf die Mütze! Ah tut das gut, mal wieder was Rohes zu hören ...

Totally unlistenable, whether bright or dark. No dynamics, everything pressed against your ears. Trying to “access” new audience with this loudness mastering job has alienated your old fans and audience. Super disappointed. I will pretend that I/O never existed and continue to listen to the few albums on streaming media platform that have not yet been butchered, aka, REMASTERED.
