    When producing, never ever rely on approved samples. You have to stand on the factory producing line, all day, from first to last item. Keep controlling any single stages.

  • @NatashaEstrada
    @NatashaEstrada3 жыл бұрын

    Ok here is a tip for people if your getting clothing manufactured. Send two sealed samples to the factory along with your tech pack. One they will open to use as a reference for the production. The other will stay sealed as a reference for if/when the finished run doesn't meet specs.

    It sounds as if the big company that recommended that incompetent manufacturer did so on purpose in order to sabotage you. They didn’t want the competition. You get the last laugh though, because you have designed beautiful, better, unique dance wear that I am sure sells out the moment it arrives at your studio.

  • @NatashaEstrada

    @NatashaEstrada

    3 жыл бұрын

    I don't think so necessarily. I think what you need to remember is that the big company probably does their own product development in-house which includes pattern making and fit testing. Also, remember the larger company will have a library of pattern blocks they will have developed over many years. The manufacturer cannot use those to make your patterns because that is the IP of the large company. It is very likely the manufacturer that was recommended has nothing to do with developing the larger companies' patterns. I've been working in the garment industry for 20+ years and I can tell you the better way to do with is to hire a pattern and sample maker separately. Get your first samples done and THEN go to the manufacturer after you have your tech packs ready. You probably spent a lot of time and money also not knowing the process, lingo, and how garments are developed.

  • @NatashaEstrada

    @NatashaEstrada

    3 жыл бұрын

    Also I will add that pattern development for stretch fabrics is a little different. If you need 1cm more coverage and you tell them to add 1cm more fabric then it'll end up being 2x more coverage than you need because of the stretch factor.

    Backgrounding your suppliers is definitely a hard lesson learnt. If they can't get it right after two tries then you find someone else. I just had to do this with a web developer, they produced two terrible designs which didn't meet our brief so we got someone else to do it. Finding out how hard you can push back on contracts like this is one of the best lessons you can learn, I would have cut this manufacturer out long ago, they sound terrible to work with

Also, this video was really interesting to me because I am an artist and I personally have reached out to one or two smaller dance wear companies via Instagram about artist collaborations. One was very reseptive of my work, but not in a position to collaborate at the time. I feel like connecting with an established company, big or small, is the way to get my foot in the door. What would you suggest base on your experience??...Go it alone or keep trying to connect with a company? Love from your older, former dancer, fanbase!😄♥️👍🏻

    This was such an interesting video idea! I had never spent time to think about the journey you take before releasing your video promoting your various products (leotards, dance bags, etc). I really enjoyed being able to take a peek behind the scenes. Though, it would have been interesting to hear more about the mistakes you personally made in business; a lot of the stories seemed more centered around ways others have tried to get over on you in business (and something that was outside of your control). Maybe, if you choose to do this again and aren't too uncomfortable with the idea, you can share the mistakes made by you that led to issues. Maybe looking at pre-held assumptions you had and how that led to some conflict or an industry standard you weren't aware of causing an issue on your end, or...I'm not sure, whatever really! Again, thank you for this video and taking time out to share with us. I definitely like these storytime-like videos (ballet-related or business-related)!
