The Misconception of Motorcycle Traveling!

I don't know about you, but in my opinion, the common understanding of motorcycle traveling is completely wrong. In this video, I will try to refresh your memories and remind you what is the main purpose of any travel motorcycle.

I think the best memories are of people and unexpected meetings. This summer on a 6,oookm round trip from UK to my son in Bulgaria via Czech Republic Romania and home via Serbia a key memory is of the young man at a motorway toll booth in Serbia. My phone stopped working and he worked so hard to help me. You then realise, the world is full of great people. Just get on your bike and meet them.

Is kindness from a stranger limited to only people who are "real" adventurers? Riders with expensive BMWs do not deserve and do not receive such roadside kindness? See my point? peace.

I started out thinking the same, need big/expensive/techno loaded bike and now I have evolved (back) to a KLR, and couldn’t be happier. Last summer I rolled 28000 miles (46000km) on a bike with no anti lock brakes (😳😳) … “It only takes 12.5 hp to circumnavigate the planet, the rest is wheel spin” Take care my friend!

Yep, there was a moment when I was being told many times that if I want to travel, I better get BMW 1200 GS or Ducati Multistrada or something similar, with at least 1000cm3. Turned out, I don't. Got around a few places with 750 and no, didn't need more power.

Hi, Pavlin! Great video! I have had a number of different bikes - different sizes and types. I've had cruisers, sport bikes, sport touring bikes with big engines, lots of power, lots of extras. I've travelled around Europe and some have been better than others. Now that I have some experience, and probably some wisdom, I got rid of all the fancy bikes and I left in my garage only one - the cheapest, the slowest and simplest bike. It's a reliable machine that has never let me down, it's easy to repair and is very economical. Most of my friends tried to tell me what a terrible mistake I have made, that I should have left the biggest bike in the garage. They tried to convince me that this bike was not good for travelling - well, I took it from London to Scotland and back with no problems. And I had a great time. People forget the fact that the journey is more important than the destination.

You are a wise man! What you say applies to everything in life, not just motorcycle trips. Keep it simple. Own what you need, or your stuff will own you. My hardy Himalayan and the camping gear I bring give me a lot. The advertising people want us to confuse ends and means.

Hi Pav, everything you have said is so true. The original purpose of a motorcycle was cheap transport, that's it. Advertising has taken over the motorcycle world, especially the enduro bike industry, it's incredible, you need this, you need that, don't forget this. I have an old 2002 1150 GSA, an aussie bike I shipped over and it does everything I need, plus remember keep the gear to a minimum, and at the end of the day it's all about the people you meet whilst on the road.

Great advice. My current bikes are a used XT250 for off pavement including multi night back country trips, and an old ST1300 for on road trips - total investment CAD $8800. I do my own maintenance and the bikes are rock solid in terms of reliability. Most of my moto camping gear is old back country hiking equipment that has served me well. I’d love to have the full suite of Klim, Giant Loop, or Mosko Moto gear and have bought some pieces on sale but just cannot justify paying full sticker. No judgement to those that can and do, but I’m happy with my choices and enjoy my rides that much more when I feel I’m getting good value……a very subjective statement I know!

A good video with good advice. I travel on an HD Road king, yes it will be mostly on asphalt. But I sometimes go with groups, most travelers like me are quite old and experienced.....but on expensive BMWs packed with electronics and self-adjusting stuff and a few displays around the driver's environment. All the gadgets are topics of conversation between the proud owners, while none of them need any of this. Unnecessary problems with electric fuel caps that refuse to open and new motorcycles that won't start. Keep it simple, stay happy.

Thanks for your honesty. I fully agree that the focus should be on what works for you without input from so-called experts. Do the kilometres and you will soon see what works for you. I have. BMW R1250 RT and after a few trips I decided on a few mods to suit my comfort. I did install foot boards, risers on the handle bars, a larger windshield and even splurged on a custom seat. I can easily don700 km in a day without being a wreck at the end of the day. My personal belief is first, be safe, comfortable. And ride my own style. Over 45,000 km in two summers and just getting the hang of it. Be safe and enjoy

Hey Pavlin! I just wanted to say thanks for this - and all, really - video. I remember once, in a fb moto group that I participate, we got notified that a lady motorcyclist from abroad had visited Athens and she wanted to meet with the group to say hi. So we met her that evening. She was a Malaysian lady, around 50-55, thin and short, with her glasses and headscarf (muslim), on an old CBF125, coming all the way from Malaysia, on her way to Portugal. I don't know, 15000 km? On a CBF125. She had 2 backpacks. We drank some beers, she drank some apple juice or something like that, she bid us good night at 9 in the evening and left for her hotel. She didn't say much, but you could see it in her eyes, that she had seen the world. It has been more than 10 years since, and I am still jealous of her guts.

I JUST JOINED AS A MEMBER TODAY 11/12/23 ! I'VE WATCHED YOU BEFORE & subscribed sometime ago. But today watching this video made me realise I'd like to get more from the great content you offer. I don't ride an adventure bike, but as you said, just get out and ride on an adventure. I just semi-retired a Kawasaki GTR1400 at over 300,000km's. I'm now moving on to my next level of open road adventure here in Australia on a new bike. Retirement is wonderfull and fortunately I can ride whenever i like. Your attitude of just getting out on whatever you have & giving it a go is so true & hit a cord with my beliefs of riding! And oh yes you are correct you don't need all the trappings, hundred's of $ of gear that some would insist you must have, to have an adventure and a good time. I will be watching & rewatching your videos & waiting for the new stuff eagerly.

You have not yet disappointed me. I really appreciate your very realistic and mature approach to all themes you address. In modern societies, people are too attached to comfort and insecure. People in the past, and today in poor countries, were/are much more versatile. Today, folks want "hotel amenities and services" in anything they do. Check how young couples go out now w/ babies and how that used to be done in the past. 🙂 I am guilty as well. In terms of real adventures, folks should remember the simpler their gear is the less prone to failures they will be as well. Hence, the chances of really having and enjoying the adventure will be higher.

Absolutely completely agree Pavlin I've been watching channels with travel experience as its great to learn :) I'm at the start of my travels an worked through the High tech bikes that constantly broke, I've rode owned an worked on alot of older Nortons an travelled about on them as I can always spanner on them, an I had some amazing adventures on a 1980s rd250lc yamaha which I'd do 2,000 miles a week on, unlike the high tech ones that broke an I was unable to fix them on the side of the road. I'm on an 1150gsa at the moment as that was easy to work on an I'm selling that an the first t7 a 2020 for dad and I as my 1150 is to big for him the t7 arrives next week looking forward to it :)

Stop caring what others have, trying to be fashionable etc Invest in yourself ie training courses etc and then go practice by yourself regularly!

Very well said. Thankfully there have been brands that to my surprise are beginning to bring out simple inexpensive reliable motorcycles and in the end it depends on what kind of adventure you want. Some of us want an Adv bike that can do the difficult trails, some want the faster easier dirt roads. For some performance is all, for others like is reliability is very important.

Good on you bro, that's what Asia taught me also... when they overtake you on a scooter and you on a CRF250 on a slippery off road section... and do the same on the road . It's Humbleness that was a big part of the mission, on a motorcycle and in general...and 'less becomes more'. If it is not just 'Image Hunting' then, 'the lighter the bike, the further you can go'. That can be $$ more, or cc less.

Pavlin i had an Africa Twin Adventure Sport DCT, then a T7 and then an old 600XT wich is a very good bike and now, in part because of your vidéo about it : a Honda CRF 300L 😅. Why ? Simplicity, direct to the goal, Price ans weight. You are so right ! We don't need more. Just ride and sometime adventure is just 10km away 🎉

Some will, I hope... However, you got me thinking.... if there are no accidents where the cars and motorcycles are "old school", cheap, without safety features, and here in the modern world we non-stop have death crashes, with our modern, safe cars and bikes, it seems that the safety features make things not so safe? I am a little bit ironical, but I don't know😅

Fully understood. I started with a 50 cm3 DKW 513, upgraded to a Simson S50B. After this I got a CBR600, followed by a 990 SMT. I crashed all if this bikes. Either by driving offroad, too fast or just too fast on dirty roads😄 I just like torque and power. But while getting older and having responsibility for my kids and family I try to slow down and wear the best protection clothes. May in 5-10 years I‘m even getting more calm. We will see😄 For me cornering ABS and Traction Control are just safety features which could save your ass especially on high volume european traffic.

Great summary of the topic Pavlin. 👍 In the last few days I have come across some interesting things, one was a post on Facebook from some guy doing a report on the new GS 1300, the one thing that stood out was he mentioned about the adaptive cruise control, he said it came in handy when scrolling through the menu on the TFT screen when you were changing the settings on the move, it was hard to look at the screen and the road at the same time, the adaptive cruise control slowed the bike down for you ? Safety features ? The second was a English couple touring through Italy on Africa twins, one got a puncture on a motorway and ended up being towed, then complained about the cost, worst part was they had no tools to repair a puncture, no way to undo the rear axle, no tyre levers, no spare tube and no pump, preparation ? This guy also complained about the food in Italy and the cost of the toll roads, I think he, like many live under the misconception that the world is just like home, and no idea that the world is not the same, that is why we travel and have a certain degree of preparedness. 👍👍👍👍👍👍

I watched the Africa Twin twins video last night. I couldn’t believe the guy’s arrogance and left him a couple of comments pointing that out. Unprepared, ignorant and arrogant just about summed him up for me. I couldn’t really work out why he wanted to travel as everything was such a disappointment to hi. Mind you his lady friend was no better. So rude, what an awful advert for British bikers touring in Europe.

Concerning early "motor-bikes", Pavlin: RTW Paul recently did a trip from 1903 again. Very interesting read. Of course on a modern bike. But anyway, lots of adventures/stories in 1903. It's not things that make a great journey ;-) The first step getting up from the sofa at home is the hardest. I completely agree with you, Günter/Nürnberg

You can really travel on any bike, I do agree. My current bike (W800) is totally wrong for touring but I am going anyway. Just may have to go a bit slower and definitely stop for fuel a bit more often 😂 In my mind, where you go for a ride has got to excite you. I would personally never ride to Magadan - travelled to lots of rough places for work and feel like I’ve had enough. A nice simple arancini somewhere in rural Italy, please. The point being, there is a destination for everyone, just got to find it and ride there with the bike you have, not the one they want you to buy.

I have a 110cc Honda Carb Beat/Icon scooter and I've been traveling in a long distance with it no problem. Just make sure to do maintenance properly. Since I don't have that much money to buy a better motorcycle, I'll just modify it to make it better myself lol XD. Adventuring with it and going to new places feels so good and refreshing. I did nearly 500 miles one weekend on my Chinese 125cc - ok, i have to admit, I wanted (noticed, Wanted - not needed) to upgrade as speed was a bit of an issue on the UK Roads, I now have a cheap 650cc Suzuki Bandit, and have done over 800 miles in a weekend on it. I dont have time now to go away for long trips, so i do what i can with what i can afford, and i know people with really expensive garage queens who dont go anywhere... Get out there with what you have... Just make sure the bike is maintained and is ready to go.
