The mind-blowing scale of The Milky Way

Ғылым және технология

This is a journey into the scale of the galaxy we live in, the Milky Way, our home in the vast cosmos we call the Universe.
If you'd like to support my ongoing project to make educational films about the Universe like this one do please check out my Patreon here: / epicspaceman
I post behind the scenes footage as I make the next video and also put Patrons in the video as astronuat avatars! I hope to make these videos full time in the future so all the support is massively appreciated.

kzread.info...
I love the Milky Way, this crazy, giant whirlpool of stars that’s our home. And I remember being blown away learning that the cloudy line in the sky was something we’re actually inside, something that really confused me at first. So this video is really my attempt to bring a little more appreciation and clarity to our oasis in the Universe. Making it has really helped me get to grips with some of the scale of things and I might well do another shorter video showing the size and location of some other things in the Milky Way on the ‘US’ scale. I also tried to address that existential dread that can creep in when getting to grips with the scale of things like this. To paraphrase Douglas Adams, our galaxy makes a long walk down to the chemist’s look like peanuts so I’ve tried to temper that with a quick reminder of the scale of the really small stuff. I do personally like to remind myself that I’m actually huge when the cosmos gets a little too big for its boots and starts melting my brain.
For some quick background on me, I started teaching myself VFX in 2021 so I could make these passion projects in my spare time and have been chipping away since. They may take months/years to make but I'm hoping to get faster as I can dedicate more time going forward.
Also finally for any quantum physicists out there, I know it’s a little sacrilegious to give a crude size and shape to a point particle like an electron. I tried to give some caveats there but ultimately I was trying to convey that the quantum world is just as small (in fact smaller) than humans are compared with galaxies. When I make a video about the quantum world I will do it better justice!

Here is the highest compliment I can give you on this video. I showed it to my 2nd period Math Class. They are good kids, but energetic and getting them to be quiet for even a few minutes can be a chore. I started this video after a few minutes of prep, discussing scale, the stars, things like that. They were their usual talkative kids. 60 seconds into your video, you could have heard a pin drop. When you compared the size of the solar system to the tip of your finger, I saw several kids looking intently at thier fingertips, mouths wide-open in wonder. You got to them. You did it. This is truly inspiring work and I hope you continue to create more masterpieces such as this. Thank you, truly, for creating this.

While doing so, I had to pause the video and really think about the country surrounding me, while looking at my fingerprint, to understand, since i remember hearing somewhere that humans can't comprehend value's that large. I decided to stop and play the video when I remembered that there's a whole universe outside of our galaxy as well lol. Made me think, would the same rule apply to our galaxy against the rest of the universe?

Can you tell me the numerical ratios you used to calculate the size of our galaxy vs the orbits of our solar system’s planets? I’ve seen various visuals done by people online but I think some of them might be a little off. For example, some visuals show that if the Milky Way was the size of North America, our solar system would be about the size of quarter. I wasn’t sure about that so I did some calculations of my own to verify that. Based on my calculations… if we take the Milky Way to be 100 thousand light years wide, then using the average diameter of Pluto’s orbit (about 79 AU’s assuming the radius 39.5AU and ignoring the diameter of the Sun) then using the width of a quarter at 0.955 inches… With one light year being 63,241 AU’s, or about 800 times the diameter of Pluto’s orbit of 79 AU’s…. The Milky Way diameter of 100 thousand light years would be a circle with only a span about 1,200 miles, not the width of the USA. (1 mile is 5,280 feet times 12 inches.) How well did I do? Or did I miss something?

  • @EpicSpaceman

    @EpicSpaceman

    10 ай бұрын

I used Neptune not Pluto in my video, with a diameter of 60AU, my fingertip I had at 28mm which puts the galaxy if 100KLY at 2951 km in diameter. I was working off the US being about 4000 km in diameter which is why in my graphics I have the galaxy not touching the edges of the US but this is where the leeway and margin for error comes in, in a big way. In 2018 a study into where they thought there wouldn’t be outer disk stars beyond 100KLY found them perhaps out as far as 200KLY or 6000 km in diameter of my scale, well beyond the edge of the US. So basically on my scale the MW is mostly in the 3000km diameter area but extends beyond this as it likely does in reality, it just depends on what method and how you define the edge, this is why I mentioned the solar system is a third to a half way out depending on how you measure where the edge is. The diameter is likely to change again in the future, as more stars are found further out and models made, for instance a 2020 study predicted the dark matter halo to be about a million LY in diameter! If it’s revised again in the future it’s likely to be bigger because we already know the bulk of the MW is in the 80KLY region. Hope that helps!

As I'm typing this, my camera is upstairs on terrace taking timelapse of sky rotating around polaris. That's what reminded me of your videos and this time I thought I'd leave an appreciation comment. 6:39 “To an electron; you are [the size of] a galaxy” Then perhaps we can be of mind, and spirit as boundless, and open as the Universe.

I think so, as far as we know we are the mind of the Universe, there may be others but it’s probably a pretty select and important job.

@@EpicSpaceman indeed. One of my favorite theories was coined by physicist John Wheeler’s “self participatory universe” it’s been a while since I’ve read up on that, so I think I will revisit soon. I find such a notion as Wheeler’s to be an elegant line of thought.

I’ve been looking for a visualization of my place in the galaxy! My husband and I are traveling to Death Valley in April for some dark sky viewing of the Milky Way and I wanted to have that perspective. And WOW, it’s like you stepped into my brain and made exactly what I wanted!!!

The magnificence of this video in terms of content and editing surely can't have been produced by Epic Spaceman (as one person) alone. If so, the lad is not only quite a brilliant teacher, but also an incredible videographer/editor. Blown away!!!!
