Robert Lansing was a terrific actor. He was in one of the best Star Trek episodes, Assignment Earth also (which they should finally do as series on its own). A classy guy, he didn't criticize the producers of the show that let him go.

My recollections of the Cleveland period are vague at best but IMO the Douglas show's best years were the Philadelphia period. To me it jumped the shark when it moved to Hollywood in late '78.

WKYC continued to carry the Mike Douglas Show weekday mornings until late August 1976. Four other stations would carry his show until its demise in 1981. Douglas later hosted "Golfun", seen weekly in 1984.

I would like to inform the viewers of this video that the blonde lady singing is Florence Henderson, who was the mother from The Brady Bunch. Before she was on the Brady Bunch, Florence Henderson used to entertain people with her talents, which included singing. Then she became very famous as the mother on Brady Bunch.

I suspect October 19th, 1965 was the date of taping. It's my understanding that from the time "Mike Douglas" went national in 1963 until the late 1970's that it was broadcast live in Cleveland (until 1965) and then Philadelphia (1965-78), and that tapes were duplicated and sent out to other stations carrying the show, who all carried it a week later. Thus, if October 19th, 1965 was the date of taping, this episode aired live in Philly everywhere else on October 26th, 1965.

There is a reason why Mike Douglas moved his show from Cleveland to Philadelphia in 1965: In the early 1950's, Group W/Westinghouse (the producer/distributor of the Douglas show) owned a TV station in Philadelphia and NBC owned a TV station in Cleveland. In the mid 1950's, NBC pressured Westinghouse to swap their Philadelphia station for NBC's Cleveland station. So, Group W/Westinghouse had a station in Cleveland, which is where Mike Douglas began his show. In 1965, the FCC ordered Group W and NBC to reverse their swap, meaning Group W returned to Philly and NBC returned to Cleveland. As a result, Douglas had to move his show. He was offered the opportunity to move to any of the five Group W cities, but picked Philadelphia since it was a two-hour drive from both New York and Washington, and he thought that it would be easier for guests to appear on the show if it originated from Philly.

Mike started in Cleveland. NBC was forced to retrade its then Philadelphia station to Westinghouse for KYW in Cleveland by the Feds for forcing Westinghouse to trade its Philly station to NBC in the first place; KYW moved to Philly and Mike went with them. Phil Donahue started in Dayton.
