And sold then because they were just good people. 🤦‍♂️ they forcefully enslaved weaker tribes. Murdered them. Sacrificed them. Bred them like animals so they could take their children and sell them. I had forgotten how good Mike Douglas shows were back in the day. He included people from all different backgrounds and experiences. This made his show a learning experience as well as entertainment. We need these kind of shows today because people are so divided and dont know how to have a conversation with someone who has different beliefs and opinions. Muhammad Ali was always so honest and an amazing human being. Sly is just Sly but man what a bandleader and performer!!

Is that really the case though? We're in a time where people can't stop bitching about how others are supposedly upset and offended by everything, and if that were true it would certainly mean that people are taking things -too- seriously. I think the current climate, if I had to name a major issue of our time (that isn't unique to it, but is a huge component of) I would say it's the obnoxiously shallow black and white thinking people have. Everything is A or B, right or wrong, all good or all bad, nazi or communist, etc.

I was born in 1952 so seen so many pluses over the years (in racial matters) but recently saw a YT comment section featuring comments by mixed race American children. It broke my heart and made me see we really have a long long way to go. All of us need to embrace the idea that we can be better people and discipline ourselves in that direction.

I think because of how people have so thoroughly embraced the idea of race, we dont see ourselves as people, independent of racial ideology and identities. "Race" the ideology permeates our vocabulary. Its become central to our identity. It effects the way we think, see ourselves and view others. This is so random, but back around 1976 or so, one day after school was out, a small group of us high schoolers were standing outside in front of the school waiting for the bus. When out of the blue, a limo pulls up, and who gets out of the limo? Muhammed Ali!! We couldn't believe it. I honestly can't remember all of what he said, but he encouraged us to stay in school. I was mesmerized, thinking "what just happened??" We were all blown away. He only stayed for 15 min or so, and then he got in limo and left. Maybe he was on the way to the airport? The cool thing was, he knew about our high school and took time out to stop by. Poly High, Long Beach, California! I am 61 now. I never forgot that day! And for any doubters, that's ok too. You are welcone to contact Poly High in Long Beach. Hopefully they still have records from 1977 or 78 and can verify. Or possibly someone from Muhammed Ali's organization. There are records somewhere!

I met Ali twice - I gave him an Islamic book and an Islamic pin. He hugged me and kissed me on my cheek while Shaking my hand. I will always remember that occasion and the second time I met him was when he was promoting his cologne at a local mall. I got another hug and was allowed to walk with him ; along with a whole Group of us) to the roof top where he was taken away by helicopter. He is and was a great man ! May he rest in peace.

Humility was not an attribute of Muhammad Ali. I used to have to spend lots of time in Children's Hospital in Oakland, California when I was a kid in the 1950s and 60s. Often celebrities' publicists arranged for them to come to the hospital to have PR photos taken of them sitting with and cheering up sick and otherwise hospitalized children, doing good turns and deeds. Every celebrity I ever saw visit spent time speaking and playing with the kids, except for Muhammed Ali. He was in and gone in less than 10 minutes, and didn't even say hello. When he left the kids talked about it, and the consensus among the children was that "He just came to get his picture taken".

I remember seeing this when it aired!!!! I was 8 years old and totally fascinated by Sly and the family Stone!! I still love their mudic!!!! Thank you! ☮️💟

This was honestly a great debate between all parties. It was all kept professional. Everyone got to state their arugment, while the other individual listened. No one jumped out of anger, disrespected the other individual by slurs, etc. And all parties provided factual things. Not just nonsense. This was great!

I feel so much love and respect when I hear Mohamed Ali talk. He is a man of integrity. I am grateful and privileged to witness him speak.

What a stark contrast. Ali’s patience is remarkable.

Fascinating to listen to soft spoken and astute Muhammad Ali

One of the high points of my life was meeting Muhammad Ali. I was working at Saint Jude children’s research Hospital in Memphis in 1990 and Muhammad Ali came in to film a commercial for the hospital. It was a rainy day and the production people were delayed so he was sitting in the waiting room and a nurse friend of mine who worked in receiving told him there was a guy in the hospital who was a boxer because I had fought golden gloves for a couple of years growing up so he said go get him. So I came up from the pharmacokinetics lab where I worked and there he was standing in the hallway and when I walked by him I said a few words to him and he kind of stared crazy off into the sky as if he couldn’t hear me so then I started getting humble and then he took a swing at me! He said you’re too easily fooled! So I backed off and we shadowboxed for a couple of minutes and then we stopped and had a laugh and his wife mostly did the talking for him but it was fun and unbelievable. He was always present for anyone to brighten her day and that’s why he was at the hospital to do a commercial for young kids dying of cancer.

@@user-ew1xu4wq4k You hit the mail on the head. When Sly hugs Ali, Ali says something to him. I think he was already disappointed in what he was hearing and seeing with Sly. But when you watch this interview, it’s sad yet telling at the same time. Sly, which maybe a lot of people don’t know, was well educated and a college graduate. Ali, on the other hand isn’t very educated at this point, and as he has said on other interviews, couldn’t read past a 3rd or 4th grade level. So Sly is actually making a lot of valid points but because he’s high and saying things in I’ll say, “Hippie Lingo,” Ali doesn’t get his point. He’s actually talking over Ali’s head. But Ali during this whole segment is definitely pissed at Sly and everyone else is catching his wrath. You can tell with Sly’s eye contact before the break when he goes to sip his drink, and you can also hear when the show resumes that Ali is saying some things to Sly. This is really a case of two men being on two different levels of sophistication. One not really being educated and in a lot of ways at this point in life, being programmed, and the other being extremely educated and having complete understanding of the world-but he can’t be heard beyond his altered state by Ali.

This is absolutely the most interesting show I have seen. First, a co-host high as a heck, then the interaction between Mohammed Ali and Sly who was high the whole show, Ali holding his own against the politician without bitting his tongue. This was a fireworks of a show!

Easy to say he should have retired in 1974, but Ali needed the money. Back then, there were no $200 million paydays like Mayweather earned. Ali's largest purse was under $10 million.

When Ali received his largest purse in 1980 for the Holmes bout, his nearly $10 million paycheck, adjusted for today, would be worth about $32 million in current dollars. That's according to the revered Consumer Price Index. Not exactly chump change, but far from the kind of money Mayweather would climb into the ring for. Ali is estimated to have earned about $60 million in his entire 20 year career. That's about $188 million in today's dollars, or about $62 million short of what Mayweather earned for just one routine night against Connor McGregor. Make no mistake, Ali was a well paid athlete in his day. But his expenses, along with the needs of those associated with him, ate up the bulk of Ali's fortune. It's why he still was fighting at the age of nearly 40, when most of his skills were gone and the onset of disease was already apparent.

While Sly was high and avoiding the truth of the day, Mohammad Ali was living and breathing it confronting it head on. He was a strong and focused soul of deep faith and understanding. When you see people smoking weed and drinking and doing drugs, they are trying to escape instead of face what’s really going on. I respect most about Ali is he was always confronting the truth and didn’t practice escapism through drug use to avoid serious and painful issues. A true courageous man.

Sly said “And where do you live my brother?” This was tense. Ali was articulate and serious and Sly was…Sly.

Yeah, I caught that too...he could have saved that for backstage though. No matter how honest people are, when they're on tv, they're performing for a mass audience (at least it used to be), so I can't see any upside in calling out Ali when he's doing good work. Sly didn't want everything to be political, but everything is political, especially calling out Ali on national television...IMHO...

Sly is a hell of a musician, probably a musical genius but every time I see him in an old interview, he's as high as a kite. This is no exception.

Ali carried himself as a man and Sly carried himself as a fool. How sad and embarrassing it must have been for Sly to watch this clip later.

We are simply a threat when we speak and approach the world with pride, dignity and full black maturity.

While I love both of them, I feel like they should have been on different episodes. Two different personalities and they are obviously clashing. Ali is a very serious and disciplined soul and Sly is very free spirited & fun loving and has a hard time keeping quiet when someone else is talking. They experience the world differently.

Putting these two on the same show was done purposely. White folks have always sought to keep us clashing and enjoy watching the Sly behaviors in us, to water down or dilute the message of an Ali. This was done on purpose. SMH.

Most musicians project feeling and Sly one of the greatest. Muhammad Ali, a warrior prince, also the greatest!

Thank You for posting this 🙏🏾. 1974 was my 9th year on the planet🌎. This was great to see. Ali’s great strength and focus was needed✊🏾, even on that show of attempted entertainment. I Thank Ali, as like I Thank PE (Public Enemy)🩶🖤✊🏾. Though Ali was a showman with the entertainment part of boxing 🥊, he bravely chose this show to express the shit that black folks endured; and sadly ‘Merica has slowly advanced/improved.

Ali looked pissed & wanted to knock him out. But he realized that it wouldn’t be a good look fighting another black man on national tv.

I was born & raised near Ali's training camp and went there often to see him train , reel ahead a few years and I was stationed at Travis Air Force Base in California . My room mate was from Oakland and took me and a few guys to the little green house on the corner in the hood where Sly grew up . Experience of a lifetime and things that I will never forget . Loved both Ali and The family Stone ....

An amazing show from many different perspectives: race, politics, music, sports, musical theater, and the challenges of TV production in the 1970's.

I was born in the the 80's this completes my soul.

Authenticity...and much respect to Mr. MIKE Douglas for allowing Mr. Ali to exercise his first amendment rights. It is a difficult discourse that sounds like it is talking about what is occurring today.

Sly was a musical genius and his music has been timeless. Watching some of these old clips have made me appreciate Michael Douglas for having interesting, dynamic, informed guests who engaged in respectful discussion. And it was on daytime TV . I am not sure that Ali was aware that Bickel was a strong activist for civil rights and human rights and did more than just say things on talk shows but rolled up his sleeves and went into the street. Hays was an effective legislator who in his time was a "liberal" but it is somewhat amusing that he was brought down because of a sex scandal that involved the misuse of funds as he had his mistress on his office payroll.

Good Lord!!!! Ali showed an immeasurable amount of restraint towards Sly Stone. The amount of patience and forgiveness he exhibited towards our intoxicated Brother is a lesson I will remember, while still being alert of my surroundings. Ali was a strong man of principles.

I'm a white man & Ali is exactly right. Besides being a great boxer, he was a great & righteous human. If I was black, he would be my role model. He did all he could to lift himself & his race up. White people have to admit all the blood & hypocrisy on their hands. Thank you Ali for your wisdom & example. Great man.

Ali was right when he said, "White people & black people like different music, food, culture, art etc..." I agree with him. My role models are mostly white. White music artists, Henry Rollins, Al Di Meola, Uli Jon Roth, mostly white artists, I'm a musician. I like some black artists too, however, I wouldn't call them role models for myself. I can't relate to Tupac, Kanye West, Beyonce, & hip hop in general. There's nothing wrong with it, I just can't relate to it & I don't like it. I like rock, classical, country, things most black people don't like or can relate to. I know not all whites or blacks feel the way I do but I think most people like what they can relate to. It has nothing to do with racism. There are always exceptions to the rule. My role models are people I can relate to, & they happen to be White. If I was black, my role model or role models would most likely be black. Sure, there are some White people that act more black than white, & some black people that act more White than black. However, there's nothing wrong with relating to your own race, & having role models in your own race. You're right, not all whites are racist but a lot of them are. I think a lot of blacks are racist too & they have good reason to be. I'm afraid racism will always be around.

It's been five decades and we're still in this same loop. "we need time to research" is the excuse the government gives time and again for any kind of reparations. TBH I didn't know they were running that same play in Ali's time either until he mocked them. Time for talk is over. What blacks need is a revolution. And first of the mind.

Yes sly was probably high on some sort of drug, but how do you know Michael Douglas didn't just have a drink. Sly was completley with it the whole time, you are just too lazy to understand what he was saying and its easier to just believe the narrative that drugs are bad and don't listen to people on drugs, even though Micheal douglas probably had a few drinks and maybe even some uppers or caffiene to keep himself focused. it is sad to see what years of misuse of drugs from ill gotten sources have done to him, but in this interview he is totally with it, just comming from a different culture and talking with a different language than what you're accustomed to. This was in the late 60s and early 70s when human consciousness, love and traditional values were more in the front of people's minds than money. The youth tossing off the 50s, suspenders and collared shirt with uncomfortable brown pants in 90 degree weather, and picking up ideas from the aboriginals who were on the land before they were. Because they knew the aboriginals had been there for thousands of years and were doing fine, meanwhile the society they were in that claimed to be so much better, was so blatantly corrupt and on a clear path to destruction. (Fast forward 50 years and look where we're at now, thousands of armed and ready nuclear missiles around the globe, global warming, terrorism, collapsing economy, an infrastructure so weak it can't handle a simple epidemic which was easily foreseen by people with knowledge of history and pandemics and viruses. And people were being sent to die in gruesome jungle warfare against gurilla forces that knew the land like the back of their hand... So to those who think sly was off his rocker and Ali was so intelligent, well I would say Ali was a little behind the times. And where sly is saying let's all just focus on enjoying now and making positive change, Ali is taking a divisive Stance. And what happens is an argument of counter opposing talking points, and sly realizes that it aint gonna change anything, its just going to create annomosity, and its positive interactions, for example sharing music and dancing, that allow people to become exposed to the same sort of information the other side has been getting. And take it further, if people were to be positive and act with pure intention towards one another, people would be more willing to hear criticism on their sides point of view. And then Sly shows the boxer, the TV personality and the author what true power is when he gets everyone up out of their seats with his funky beats! Thats real power.

I went to see Sly perform at St Johns University at this time -- he cancelled the show and outside i saw him laying on the ground drugged out - i was a teenager and was disappointed and never forgot that - he and Ali talk here about the struggles of black people and here 50 years later its the same thing - the real problem is that change has to come from within - you cannot demand everyone else change and yet you do not - so come back in 20 years and the same problems in the community will still exist

Muhammad so impressive here... and man, does he look pissed at sly! it was really surprising--and uncomfortable--to see the tension or conflict between Muhammad and Wayne hays (as well as sly)... but there's an argument to be made that that is what is needed, a kind of creative tension. I admire Muhammad even more after seeing this: what an incredible, and fearless, straight shooter!

I remember watching this, I was six, home from school I’m pretty sure, watching my brand new baby brother as mom slept, she made me do a lot of that, white kid, growing up in New York, I was totally intrigued with Ali, not so much his fighting, although never missed one of his fights, but with his words, he captivated me, us, back then!….

Talk shows were great back then.

Sly was high. Ali was sober. They're both my brothers. It's a Family Affair. ❤

And they were friends, Sly would go to his home. But you know how it is, you can have a friend you may think they cool people but you don't like everything about them or the things that they stand for or believe in.

Sly is kind of obnoxious.

I’m here because my dad told me to watch this episode because Sly was high. He said Ali looked like he wanted to beat his ass lol. We were talking about all of stars that are on the news for drugs and all kinds of stuff and this came up. Crazy smh

You have a good father and kudos to you for watching with the intention of comprehension.

Love the way that whenever Ali appeared in public, he dressed like a businessman. He dressed like a conservative, and in doing this, he was taken seriously, most athletes dressed casually or outlandishly by comparison.

Pretty much everyone back then, including high profile athletes, dressed in a suit and tie when in public. But you must admit, Ali was still well dressed.

My dad loved this man. The smile the grin the happiest on my dad's face when he got to see Ali on TV. Ali and Dr. King were the two greatest men ever to my dad.
