You have a high profile shooter that was in development hell, that made big promises, and turned out to be an ultimately disappointing wreck. With Mighty No. 9, you have a high profile crowd funded game that was in constant delay, that made big promises, and turned out to be an ultimately disappointing wreck.

For a little over 50k Toby Fox made Undertale. For 300k Yacht Club Games made Shovel Knight, plus three extra campaigns and modes to come for free as DLC. And for 4 million Comcept made shit. And has the fucking nerve to charge for its crappy DLC.

Comcept consists of AAA devs, though. Undertale was made while Toby was studying at college and did not have high quality requirements for most of its parts. Shovel Knight ran out of money and the devs spent something like six months in crunch. All that said, MN9 sounds like it was badly mismanaged. Was it 10 simultaneous platform releases? Madness for such a small studio. Did online coop make it in? Another huge headache. Net code requires a lot of effort to figure out. Doing it with little hassle probably requires an expensive programmer, and skimping on talent in this area usually ends up being very expensive in terms of delays and knock-on effects from what I understand.

"make you cry like an anime-fan on a prom night" Good marketing choice, alienating your target audience before the game is out yet. 10/10 Would make fun of again.

Weird that you didn't bring up *Skullgirls* when talking about indie games that used crowdfunding... 1) It's an indie title that was made by a team of 10 or 12, it wasn't a solo effort. 2) It got into a crowdfunding campaign (Indiegogo) to expand the roster and get better versions 3) It took the time it needed to release the next characters 4) They ported the game to multiple platforms 5) They had issues with publishers... including Konami... 6) On Steam, they asked the people' help using betas to balance the characters IMO, that's how an indie team should handle crownfunding stuff...

Hey, at least the shirt will keep me warm? No idea might just huck it for a few bucks. The Yooka-Laylee people were nice enough to refund me for the game since I originally backed it for the Wii u but if you heard about that fiasco they had to move it to the switch. So since I was not going to buy an all new system for one game they were respectful and showed great customer service and refunded me. Funny that you mention it like that Conduit when I told the story to another individual punctuated it with the same joke.

Even if you agree with her views, a community manager is supposed to create harmony between the community and the developers, not hostility. I remember she even told backers to not buy the game when it came out, she's terrible at her job.

I heard that the backers that were banned didn't even had their names displayed in the credits, they were just referenced as a "Generous Backer".

I think Daikatana is the perfect parallel to Mighty No 9. They were both ugly, delayed, glitch riddled messes plagued with obnoxious and repulsive marketing campaigns. John Romero is still awesome though.

Well the big difference between Mighty No. 9 and Yooka Laylee is that people are satisfied with YL. Sure, the game could have been better obviously, but people still enjoyed it enough and it did feel like a spiritual successor. I'm just hoping the team, if they do a sequel, learn from their mistakes and build upon things. Maybe smaller levels, but more of them with better focus and better controls for the transformation stuff.

I mean... the thing is, it already has hurt them. People are going to remember this one for quite a while every time they hear the word "kickstarter", and they're going to hesitate to put money down. Even if they end up doing it it's going to add a whole lot of anxiety and paranoia to the mix that isn't going to help anyone. But I think we all knew that was going to happen with the age of crowdfunding still in its infancy, and tbh having a little paranoia to spare is probably going to be a good thing in the long run.

That game was so damn good. All the time I played it I didn't know it was made by one person - Dean Dodrill. You should read his story too if you like this kind of thing. It's a truly inspiring story of persevering through the lowest lows for your passion, and coming out on top in the end (Since the game is so amazing and he's deservedly made a lot of money selling it). He even put A TON of effort on the PC Port because he takes pride in his work. If more devs were like this guy gaming would be 20 years ahead

I think that's been through several rounds of video compression. Dust: An Elysian Tail actually looks even better in reality, especially the fighting which is too fast-paced and effects heavy to show up well on here. (Also on sale cheap on Steam.)

And don't forget 20XX, which Kickstarted as Echoes of Eridu, launched into early access, and just recently saw its 1.0 release. It's quite a nice little roguelike Megaman-y thing. Deep Silver could learn a thing or two about how to make trailers from them.

I agree Yooka Laylee is not exactly a good game, yet it was able to create a game too big for its own good and at the same time pleasing to look at, doing exactly what it promised (a Banjo game). MN9 wasn't capable of even being a Megaman clone, not even of infamously bad Megaman games.

Funny how Yooka Laylee came out, screwed up, and put all of the weight on Bloodstained's shoulders.

I'm not sure how people would be expected to know these things beforehand. Especially the Japanese big-names, who are almost always an enigma to begin with. Not to mention I don't see what's wrong with people having scorn against the big studios who screwed things up to the point that they sought them elsewhere. It's not a "fuck you," it's a "fuck you too." I mean, with Bloodstained, the "fuck you" would be to Konami. Konami is Konami, and Konami is the worst. Fuck Konami.

I was calling what you said immature, because without context, it was. There was no strawman at any point, nor was there really any attack. Plenty of sarcasm, but no attack. It weirds me out that people say Yooka Laylee was a screw-up, when that game is EXACTLY what was promised. Way too many of us forgot about all the annoying bullshit that came with those older games, because we were too busy being hype over some nostalgia.

What was promised with Yooka-Laylee was a spiritual successor. But what nobody expected was for that game to effectively be a step backwards into an older style rather then a *continuation* of the series' legacy.

Before today I was just too broke... Now I'm a parasite. I think I'm going to find a corner and cry.

*+MetalShadowChaos* Heck, you can play all of them; backers of _Bloodstained_ and _Yooka-Laylee_ now have playable demos, and _Indivisible_ had one from the very beginning that anyone with a Steam account can go and download to this day. That's the kind of display of confidence and transparency that causes me not to be worried about any of those projects, despite having immersed myself in the _Mighty No. 9_ debacle over the past week.

What a high-quality piece of audio-visual content! That definitely did/did not show a lot of memes and/or effort! Well done content creator! He/she did some things that elicited certain emotions from my person, that made me react in a certain way that may, or may not align with that of the rest of the viewing audience. Truly a meretricious piece of content!

Three years later....Bloodstained is FINALLY out, and it rules. Yooka-Laylee was fine, not great, but I liked it.

Mighty No. 9 would be considered great if it was made by 1 dude, and it was like a passion project that he worked for a while on. Not made by a team of people with 4 million dollars of kickstarter money

Mighty No 9 in it's current state would only be considered ok if it was done by one person. Merely a decent first effort. Still mediocre and amateur. There have been better looking/functioning games that have been done by a single person (hell, we saw them in the video).

Dust was made by one dude and was still really good, the voice acting wasn't great, but it was better than m9. xD

It's honestly pretty impressive and fun for how early the build is. Shame it caused a fatal system error on my PC. I think they wanted to show it because they knew Mighty No 9 would raise questions lol, and it did make me feel good about the progress.

I wasn't involved in this mess at all myself, but from an outside view I would just like to point out that it seems like a damn shame that Red Ash failed, because that art at 5:38 is fucking beautiful

You know what, it's not better than nothing. It should have stayed nothing. Megaman was better off dead. It's not technically Megaman, but it's a damn shame.

LC works fine on console, not great, but not bad. Sad the PC version is bad. The Aniversary edition is the best with 1-8 on 1 disc. LC was a ripoff imo.

Well - kickstarter is exacly that - you put not your money, but your reputation on the line. If you create a bad game for your or your publisher's money - you still can get a second chance. If you so spectaculary fail a kickstarter succsess - it's almost impossible to get you reputation back from that. Espesially not with "it's better then nothing" attitude.

Jim you didn't also mention the scandal a few years ago when Comcept hired a community manager who is her own words "had never played Mega Man and wasn't really a fan". Then people found out she got the job purely because she was dating one of the higher ups. then when people started to criticize MN9 on the fan forums she deleted those posts as the community manager and never reported the criticism to her superiors. The she was promoted to an extra artist and started pitching concept art with self insert art of herself into the game. People were pissed.

The 'only got a job because she was dating someone' was admitted to be untrue and retracted (the internet detective admitted he couldn't even find evidence she was dating either), EncyclopediaDramatica keeps it up for the lulz though. The alleged mass bannings were not Dina's choice alone (they had to be approved by someone else), they had to be approved by others. And she left in 2015.

I feel sorry for all the Mega Man fans who were let down by this, I have a friend I remember being so excited about it when it got announced, it sucks that it turned out this way. I was never really interested in Mighty No.9, never played a Mega Man game, I have backed Bloodstained though and stuff like this about Kickstarter projects does come off as worrisome! I played the Backer Demo though the other day and enjoyed what was there, so I'm still pretty optimistic!

A majority of people who backed it seem happy with it. In that sense, it didn't fail.

Favorite episode yet just for holding that opening pose come hell or MN9!

A year and a half later, and only one of the Kickstarter nostalgia trinity remains to be released, as MN9 and Yooka-Lailey fell flat on their wretched faces. There's less than one month left to see if the last one will be good enough to heal those burns Please, Bloodstained. Please be great.

I sadly backed this so I know the feeling of never wanting to crowdfund again

That's what I'm trying to figure out. Maybe because they decided to make the game for practically every gaming platform, instead of just focusing on a few, it had a negative impact on the graphics.

Yeah it did. Maybe it would of been better if the graphics look like that on the main consoles ,while it would look similar to Gunvolt on handhelds.
