91? The 80's were amazing. Such a timeless era. Wish things were as simple as things were back then. Kids today are so unbelievably spoiled and detached. 🥺
"The seasons pass but the monsters stay." This line feels like it has such a double meaning to it. On the one hand, even when we grow up, we carry the scars of our childhood with us. But, on the other hand, there's something painful about returning to your childhood home and seeing all the old familiar things that you've left behind. The way even a random room of the house could have so much meaning to you as a kid, and now, even though it's just a room, that whole mythology - good and bad - comes rushing back. The old toys that used to have names. The darkness in the basement that's just darkness now. We even leave our monsters behind.

Leaves you with that feeling of total impermanence and the inability to reach the old again. It’s like you get to window shop the memories of your own lives, all you can do is look, never touch. It’s a fitting way you put it, with the things that stuck with us and things that make us have our breath taken away still.

i never had a childhood home, by the time i was in grade nine i had lived in over 20 different homes across Canada.. I wish I has a childhood home to go back to.. to have some memories and an anchor point. As you get older you reminisce about your youth, regrets and things you would redo. This song is such a gut punch, i had heard it two years ago and lost it.. i just found it again and hits even harder now.

This song encompasses everything that was amazing about growing up in 1980's/90's blue collar middle America, and it also perfectly captures the melancholy feeling an entire generation has now, knowing that their kids were robbed of living that same magical youth. Blockbuster. Malls. Nintendo 64. Riding bikes until the streetlights come on. Pizza hut actually being good. Living in a two parent single income home. Living rooms with warm rugs and cars with wood interior panels. The sounds. The smells. The tastes. The Feelings. This song just makes you relive all of it for 6 minutes.

When I listen to Endless Summer, I get this feeling about the longevity of life and its promise if we just leave behind what we've known in search of what's out there for us. Nocturnal is darker, more emotional, and much more personal. A statement about the madness and directionless nature everyone feels at the end of a relationship. Kids feels closer to Endless Summer, and in a way, it's a prequel to that project. It's that time of everyone's life before they even realize there's something beyond the "arcade." The lack of saxophone actually helps to justify this point. The saxophone is usually interpreted as being such a mature instrument, and Kids is trying to capture a slightly less adult theme. It's not like the limitless possibility of Endless Summer or the feeling of being lost in Nocturnal. It's one day. It's one moment. It's messy, carefree, and honest. While the lyrics have certainly matured, almost in contradiction to the rest of the album, the direction is less focused than their previous efforts. The sound is more synth than anything they've done up to this point, but for the project itself, it fits. Altogether, it's a rich album that re-enforces the band's accomplishments, even though it ultimately doesn't add to them.

Days of Thunder has never left my phone since I put it on there, I think, two years ago, but I always seem to forget about it. In a way, I think that's the best way to answer your question. The songs are always there, and I especially love "Kick Drums and Red Wine", "Gloria", and the eponymous track, but unless the shuffle chooses any of the songs from that EP, I always seem to forget about them. Like, if I'm out jogging and the phone randomly starts playing "We Move Forward", I'll catch a second wind, but when the song ends, it's like I forget that the EP even exists. Though, I like Days of Thunder as a whole, whereas with Endless Summer, I definitely prefer select tracks versus listening to the entire album. Nocturnal, I could play on repeat for hours, and I've done so MANY TIMES.

I'm a bit disappointed by this album. It has some great tracks - Lost Boy and America 2 are both up there with my favourite songs of theirs, and Explorers is great too. But the album lacks that storytelling feeling that the previous albums had. I've listened to it twice today, and it just doesn't absorb me the same way the previous albums do. I wonder if it will grow on me, but really I think this should have been released as an EP, or held back until a few more songs were written to tie it all together. I was hyped for another Endless Summer or Nocturnal, and as enjoyable as Kids is, it just isn't on their level.

The first song of Days of the Thunder I am using for my wedding intro into the church listen to it and imagine the church doors opening when the Bass kicks in when she enters , Days of the Thunder well thats the intro to the Reception
I feel like people don't understand this album at all and really overlooked its significance. They say things like Endless Summer was a blast from the past, Nocturnal was dark and mature. But in truth both those albums are just fantastical ponderings of a period of time and corresponding aesthetics (except for ''Los Angeles''). THIS album is the true nostalgic tribute to the passing of that era, this album addresses the sad truth about the passing of time and how we grow to accept things as they change. A far far more mature emotion and in a way darker too as we can only look back in time with melancholy fondness.. Every note in this song is a transitional element of pure nostalgia. The very essence of retrowave but not by mimicking what's been but by expressing what it truly is.
Hearing the sound of children fading away at the outro is like the ending of a replay of your childhood memories 🥺

I think the "monsters" also refer to all the cultural dysfunction that we are facing now (Iike divorce culture, bad economy, debt, increasingly strained relations with other people and communities, hyped up "issues" thrown in our faces constantly by news media, and so on.) It refers to the affects and aftermath on the "the kids" (the Millennials) and "the parents" (Boomers.)

All these different interpretations of this lovely song, each one very plausible. That's how you know it's good...
To me "the seasons change and the monsters stay" is about childhood trauma and pain not disappearing just because the kid has grown up.
to me this album feels like its the loss of childhood, of things and time moving on. the magic is moving on, and the monsters that kids feared are still there, they just have changed to new monsters but have never gone away (monsters being the fears we all have)
Well.. that's not music. That's MAGIC!!
To this day, I regret not showing my friend Sam this. He would've loved this. R.I.P. Sam Whedbee, I miss you.
Solo at 03:12 is the most beautiful part of the song. Had it on repeat while working.
This song hits close to home. I was born in the 90's, and I was just old enough to see the Dan River Mill close thanks to NAFTA. All the little businesses around it left shortly thereafter. The Downtown area is a ghost town. Sears, Kmart, Dick's, Petco, and other small stores have left this year. The mall arcade closed years ago, soon the mall will close soon. It's just sad to watch the town fall apart. Many people my age are on drugs to cope with life. Most American cities went through something similar and moved on. I feel like time stands still here. Maybe it's time for the kids to grow up and move away.

ahhh your comment made me cry while listening to this song, especially the last thing you said "Maybe it's time for the kids to grow up and move away". I was born in the early 90s and it was such a time of innocence, I miss my childhood so much. Growing up as a kid back then was so nice, no social media and distractions. Just the plain outdoors and exploring with the neighborhood kids, going rollerblading, etc.

both Bicyclist and Jamesstevens are wrong, the reason malls are dying, businesses are dying, is because we are becoming a society that doesn't enjoy things that take more time, we rush and rush through our daily lives, everything has to be fast and convenient, so Malls die because no one is there to just enjoy it, you know, chill with a group of friends or make new ones, blow some change in a arcade to have cheap prizes and candy, just you know, enjoy the time you have left on this planet.. take things slow and have a good time, nope.. I want shoes, ok I order from amazon, I want food, ok, I go for Doordash and the nearest drive thru.

being from 93 i just barely got a glimpse of what 90s life was like. it feels like a dream now compared to today. One of my first memories was with my brother and family at a mall arcade. I do not like the future
This song is so beautiful and sad. It made me think about my childhood and cry. For all the things that were given importance other than love and family. My monster was and is the drive to be successful and make money, the monster that ate my family because no amount of money and success was ever enough. Thank you for this bitter sweet catharsis.
I read a comment that this effort by The Midnight is reminiscent of Endless Summer and gives a feeling of optimism. I don't know why I'm on the total opposite end of the spectrum. The album has a higher tempo than Nocturnal and Days of Thunder but it all seems like tracks of lost potential. Especially with the line of "we grow up and move away, the seasons pass but the monsters stay". It's sad to hear that because it feels really true. Although you stop fearing the boogeyman and other make believe monsters as you grow older, too many people come face to face with real monsters such as drugs and alcohol or sexual pressures and they kick our asses. I just wish kids could someday get to actually live in a world they dreamed about. But every track is jamming, so hit play again.

Love it when the Tycho-like guitar hits with the Kraftwerk-ish rhythm underneath. This KIDS album is an amazing ride! Thematically, it feels like a perfect blend between Endless Summer and Nocturnal. Almost like a bridge between the two... The lack of Saxophone is noticable, but in no way detracts from the experience.... the synth-focussed direction this album takes really gets across that Tim gets better and better at synthesis with every album. Experimental vibes compliment The Midnight's signature sound on this album like never before, with everything from your 'standard' Retro-Wave vibes to even some straight 4-to-the-floor stuff! Thoughtful, solid production, and most importantly, full of FEELS. 9/10 album for me, with a strong suspicion that it will grow to a 10/10 with multiple listening sessions. GREAT work guys!!
This makes me feel more nostalgic for the decade it came out; the 2010s Can we please go back to that time? Before the lockdown and negativity? Best time of my life 😢
This song made me all teary. :'(
Is it bad that this song makes me teary eyed every time I play it?
It is funny and sad... I was born on '85 and now my kids are 9 and 5. This song makes me feel old and young at the same time. Listening to this tune while looking at pictures of our growing up process put tears in my eyes.
Whats amazing about music, is that every note, sound, word, and chord is nothing more than a paint stroke. Music paints a beautiful image that all of us can see on our own individual canvas of the mind. That canvas is already colored with our own lives, past, experiences and memories. When these two mix, something insane is created. The Midnight's musical color palette is one that sounds amazing on the canvas of my own memories.
2018 has been a wonderful year for synthwave. New Carpenter Brut, new The Midnight, new Gunship. Absolutely wonderful.
I've been waiting to hear the full version of this song for a month and the wait was worth it. It's beautiful, sad and captures the nostalgic essence of my childhood. I love it.
This song reminds me of how to be thankful that my parents had to deal and also to endure my behavior and mistakes. So sad how fast eight years have passed since I moved out. Please remember to be a child again when you’re at your parents‘ house next time.
Very Emotional. (From Brazil)
I think we can all find that place in our past that represents this picture, whether it be an old shopping centre, café or holiday venue that we hold close to us. The audio acts a catalyst to take us back there.

I was feeling pretty good about this song until I read the lyrics and immediately thought of my one month old boy and the day he'll be all grown up and ready to leave home. I broke down in tears at the thought. Damn you Midnight and your beautiful music - I haven't cried in decades...but then again, I've never been a dad until now!
Whats awesome about synthwave is . They're using that sound to make it apply to current day. They've managed to hit a timeless lock on their sound. You can hear this at any point in time and the feeling will hit you. Idk man The Midnight and Gunship, bands in general like this. They've sliced through a sound barrier times had kept away. No other music cuts as deep to my trauma and my experiences and even today like the midnight and gunship can. I'm indebted to The Midnight forever. Maybe you know what you're doing or not but you've helped keep this broken person happy with Gloria. I genuinely smiled the other day. No other music has made me smile, just joy pure joy going on and to have your music only tells me im here. Im seen.

To all the naysayers saying that this album does not compare to there other albums or not good enough I say that every other songs the midnight made have some story and aim at certain time in our life and clearly this album is in the typical teen category when he/she discovers certain thing on their life or one could say explore the dreamlike 80's and also the fact we should be happy there is a genre we get to pick the vibes or feel we get one small point that this track does not have that much storytelling to its songs its just sort of put you in a place to discover your own.

I just think the entirety needs multiple listens. Enabling a grasp on what didn't seem as beautiful at first

@@Houlgravely Well I know that this song does not have a good chorus but its not about that its about the feel and beats but its your opinion ,whatever rocks your boat.
My medication makes me pretty numb to everything most of the time, but this made me cry openly. Best album yet from my favorite band.

What is your medication? Something self-administered? Stop abusing.
I just got told that you guys are coming to Berlin, Germany next year for a show!!! I ordered tickets on the spot. Now i am jumping and dancing in my appartment playing Midnight-Sound full blast. In the middle of the song "Explorers" my neighbor banged on the wall screaming something. Didnt mind, didnt care - Midnight is to share. Than the doorbell rings like crazy..... Neighbour called cops. I opened the door, the cops recognized the song on the spot. Turns out the officers are Midnight-Riders just like me. They joined me to sing along for a moment before leaving. The neighbours face just dropped. I think she kinda accepted her fate so i sent her some KZread-Links with Finest Retro Selection. Now Midnight-Sound is blasting out of her app. Mission accomplished! World is safe again! See you beautiful desasters in Berlin Feb. 26th Lido Club. Stay awesome , Love Macky
On repeat. Best anthem for sad kids from the 80's missing out on what was. So bummed I missed you guys in Vancouver.
Listening to this band is like reliving my childhood in the 80s
This song makes me bawl my eyes out thinking of your dead past
I was a 90’s kid and watched as this 80’s arcade genre came to an ending. It’s breaks my heart honestly as they destroyed the mall I went to that had an arcade with all the 80’s classics games I enjoyed playing. Glad to come across this band to bring back some of the nostalgia from that time.
Its bitter sweet. As kids, we couldn't wait to grow up. Now that we are grown up, we wish we were kids.
Why do you make album covers so nostalgic ? You will break my heart 🥲
I absolutely love this. Thank you for blessing us with this all mighty Midnight
Concert last Sunday was just amazing
This got me right in the feels. Between The Midnight and Gunship I can't explain this emotion of childhood emptiness and joy that i'm feeling at the same time when listening to these songs. It might be that question that keeps bringing me back to these songs over and over again.
When i was younger i had a dream of being in my brothers room. The room was haunted with spirits that flew around the room violently. This dream used to scare me, like many others, but as i grew up and the depression started sinking in i began to miss these things. Though i had bad dreams, sad dreams and memories, they are apart of my childhood, a place i desperarely wish to return too. Now i wear these sad memories like a second skin because i love them even though they hurt me. I dont know why i feel this, so bitter towards the future. I think maybe it is because childhood was a shelter for me.
Every album brings me back to my childhood in the 80’s. Awesome memories. I think if everyone in America listened to The Midnight everyone would be happy and the crime rate would drop 😎

No. The crime rate always has a direct correlation to poverty. Eliminate poverty and only then will the crime rate go down.
Whenever I listen to "The Midnight" 's song I feel like going back to 80's Synth music :) this makes me happy.
Ya'll! It's morning and I open my tab to expect A song from the Midnight like they said they would but what I see!? 4* new songs in row!! IT'S A GOOD FRIDAY FOR ME!
This song makes me emotional because my dad used to play this every day almost and I would play video games and listen to the music with him in his little apartment until he moved out of there and doesn't listen to this kinda music any more so it just makes me cry a little aha
What an incredible choir! They did an amazing job, and love The Midnight!
The lyrics- in and of themselves- are poignant and relevant enough for anybody listening past a certain age, even if they weren't alive in the 80's let alone old enough to remember it- but then comes the instrumental that breaks out into full bloom at 2:45 : It has such a bittersweet feel to it, nostalgic yet wistful at the same time. The mood sits in this perfect little intersection between sadness and happiness. It's amazing how it manages to simultaneously capture a certain longing and desire for the good old days that are never coming back (or at least, never coming back quite the same way), yet also celebrating the drive to keep moving forward in pursuit of an even better future, no matter how long the journey may take or how trying it might feel at times. It's like you just clocked Super Mario Bros. when a message appears onscreen, saying 'Congratulations, you have defeated Bowser and rescued the Princess. But this is just a game- life is harder and far more important. At some point, you must show the same determination to succeed and do your best, even if it means leaving video games behind. But the rewards that await will be far greater- provided you remember what it takes to achieve victory like this'. Then right when the above has you in this hypnotic grip, suddenly it breaks away and drops into the most gorgeously Knopfleresque guitar riff, sounding like something straight from Dire Straits circa 'Brothers In Arms' to bring it home.
As we grow up we leave a-lot of friends and things behind thats why we cherish the time we have and everything els because nothing last forever
To me its more than just nostalgia, but bringing back memories of what life was like when I was a kid growing up. I am fortunate to have been born in 82 and use to go to arcades, skating rinks, etc until I later I got into cars growing into adulthood.
One of my favorite in the album is so overwhelming guys thank you for this song I love you all ❤️
Why this song always makes me cry so hard? man!
Level 80 song so awesome
I want to live in this sound forever.
And the midnight strike again.. And I love it
Beautiful ♥️ with love from India 💕
GAHH that guitar at the break... reminds me of The Paper Kites' Twlevefour album. If you like this (especially the 80's guitar) check them out too.
If only we could turn back the hands of time. The Midnight does it through their music. New nostalgia, it's amazing
