The MG 08/15 Updated Between the Wars

Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
In the aftermath of World War One, the Treaty of Versailles strictly limited the number of machine guns that the German military could keep in inventory. The main type that the Germans chose to keep was the MG08/15 (although a substantial number of MG08 guns were kept as well). Through the 1920s and 1930s, these Maxim guns were improved and updated in a variety of ways until finally replaced by the MG34 starting in 1936. Many of these updated 08/15s would be deployed in reserve areas during World War Two, but relatively few survive today. Today we are looking at one such gun, and noting the changes made to it compared to the 08/15 of World War One. Specifically:
* Anti-aircraft sights and mounting brackets
* Oiler bottle in the stock
* Bipod attachment at the muzzle
* New water drain and fill plugs
* Modified drum hanger bracket
* Feed block for both cloth Maxim belts and metal MG34 belts
* Leather pistol grip cover
* Top cover locking latch

    As a mechanically minded person, what I really love about production guns, is that they have so many elegant little mechanisms to connect the different parts together without using any bolts at all! All those spring loaded plungers and connectors like for the aircraft sights, gun stands, steam cap etc. are so simple, yet ingenious. I'm not a gun-owner (living in Germany), but I've been a huge fan of mechanical contraptions and electronic devices all my life and I have taken apart, fixed and restored many things as different as turntables, lawnmowers, cars, but also radios, power tools etc. I've never really come in contact with firearms in real life though and that's why I'm really grateful for these videos. I think I will use some of mechanisms we see in your teardowns and use them in some of my DIY-projects. Thank you for showing these ingenious pieces of engineering to the rest of us, who otherwise would never get to see them!

    The expression is used in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, South Tyrol and Luxembourg and can be understood or understood in a neutral or pejorative way. The term is used in the sense of “very common”, “not particularly”, “average”, “mediocre” or “not worth mentioning”. The idiom is used to indicate things that are out of date or inferior. This includes the reference to “cheap” if the standard or ordinary is to be expressed. It is used as an "indeclinable adjective" and the expression does not have a form of augmentation. Origin: MG 08/15 There are several explanations for the origin of the idiom that are related to the 08/15 machine gun. 08/15 stands for the year of introduction of the original MG 08 model, 1908, and for 1915, the year of further development. These numbers were hammered into arms. The first approach traces the phrase back to the fact that in the First World War the German soldiers had to complete lengthy and monotonous training with this machine gun every day. So at some point the term 08/15 stood for boring routine among the soldiers, which they had long grown tired of. Another explanation goes back to the length of the First World War and has to do with the quality of the weapons. From the time MG 08/15 was introduced, the material quality decreased and the frequency of errors increased. With statements such as “The weapon is run-of-the-mill!” The soldiers would have coined the meaning “of poor quality”. As standardization progressed, it was possible to manufacture individual parts of the well-known machine gun in bicycle or typewriter factories. At this point in time, the ammunition was also easily interchangeable between different models. The saying "this is 08/15" can also be related to an (average) standard. It is possible that all aspects played a role in creating the phrase.

    It isn't necessarily an "official enough" phrase to. be taught in school, but every German uses it. Although "nothing special" is a meaning of it "standard" would be more precise. It has its origin in the German DIN System (depending on the year: Deutsche Industrie Norm, Deutsches Institut für Normierung or similar), because some part of the Machine Gun 08/15 was the first to be standardized in order to be able to split production between different Factories.

    More like since the Ancient Roman Empire collapsed. First solution was to rebuilt it as "Holy Roman Empire", followed by various other solutions for many problems like when the Eastern Roman Empire was conquered by the Arabs, Germans rebuilt it in Eastern Europe. You maybe know it as "Russian Empire". The titles Kaiser and Zar both come from the title "Caesar". ;)

    the saying "das ist doch null acht fünfzehn" or "this is just 0 8 15" was ones a good word. Like "its top notch" or "brand new". Over the time it become "normal" or "just more of this crap". I dont know why this happen may becouse of the second world war where this thing got replaced by the mg34 and mg42.

    Amazing that the US government declined Maxim's MG , deeming it too $! As a result, Sir Hiram merrily trotted off to Europe and sold his invention to Vickers (Maxim-Vickers) and also to the Kaiser! Queen Victoria was so impressed that she knighted him! Even Edison was afraid of Maxim, as Sir Hiram had many electrical patents under his belt. An amazing man who embraced the Industrial Revolution with MANY innovative inventions, learning his skill sets by apprenticing and mastering many crafts! Simply amazing!-John in Texas

    I have a question: Does anyone know what "EWD" or "EWL" means? It ist stamped into the stock of the gun; you can see it at 5:57 for example. I am interested because we found a Gewehr98 - WW 1 version - in our attic a few years back which had the same letters stamped into the stock. Unfortunately searching for it on Google does not bring anything usefull up for me. If you know more please let me know.

    I think ,Einwohnerwehr Bayern'/ Inhabitants Guard Bavaria. Bavaria tried to reintroduce the once existing local militias, which had been up to 1840s/1850s a voluntary support force for army and police. But it was forbidden, as soon as the Allied Powers noticed this.
