The Message Abyssinia Scene

This scene from the movie The Message shows how the first Muslim converts ran to Abyssinia(Ethiopia) when they were being persecuted when the religion of Islam was new and unheard of. The scene is extraordinary in that it shows who had the power at that time...this is for educational purposes only...

I am 39 years old. I am French. European. And Christian. I saw this film for the first time in November 2022, during a party with an Algerian Muslim friend. We had an "interreligious dialogue" by watching two films in a row : I introduced him to the film "LUTHER", retracing the beginnings of the Protestant Reformation... and we continued with "THE MESSAGE". A great discovery. I already know Islam quite well, so the world of the film already spoke to me quite a bit... A scene particularly touched me : the one where the Christian sovereign of Abyssinia draws a line on the ground and declares to the first Muslims "The difference between you and us is not thicker than this line"... before declaring to the Pagan Meccans "Even against a mountain of gold, I refuse to deliver them to you". Fundamentalists of all persuasions will howl in horror if they feel like it, but as far as I'm concerned : if I'm not a Muslim, I am in any case an Islamophile Christian. Peaceful and enlightened sharing between Muslims and me is multiplying : it's the best of miracles, when so many other believers of both religions are unable to get to know each other and prefer to tear each other apart... 🙏 💝 🤲 There is a figure in Islam that is dear to me : that of Jafar, of whom the Sira tells us that it was mainly him who dialogued with the Christian prince. Jafar reminds me, in some ways, of one of my favorite Christian saints : Francis of Assisi. Originally, the son of a wealthy family who took care of the poorest, before making himself poor... I believe that the Prophet Muhammad nicknamed Jafar "the Father of the Poor", because he gave all his money to the more deprived. I have sometimes caught myself thinking that if I were a Muslim, I would keep my Christian first name in everyday life : but if I had to take an Arabic first name to mark my attachment to Islam, then without hesitation... it would be Jafar. Peace to all open-minded Christians, and to all Muslims in the world : you too are my beloved brothers and sisters 🙏🌹🤲 Barak Allahu fikum 🕊️ * Ramadan mubarak 2023 : lots of good things to all of you for this holy time that is dear to you. Right in the middle of my time of Lent, I will have special thoughts for you.

What makes me proud as a Black person is the significant role the Black community played in the expansion of Islam. When early Muslims faced persecution, our beloved Prophet Muhammad advised them, "Those who can no longer endure the persecution can migrate to Abyssinia. Their king is righteous, believes in the one true God like us, and does not oppress people unjustly." This was a powerful testament to a Black community that was not even Muslim at the time. It came from the best of the prophets, our beloved guide, who suffered greatly to make us aware of our innate nature (fitra) and to bring us Allah's message. Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, recognized and appreciated the righteousness of the Abyssinian people. ❤️

Also Muhammad instructed his followers to beat their wives, and that whoever beats his wife shall not be questioned about it. It is christianity that respects women, as the Bible says the husband and the wife shall become one body. @@abdullahalrai No, those Christian sources actually were written a few decades after the death of Jesus. Also, I'm not a Christian, but we know that Jesus did not preach of any Muhammed but that people should repent and that he would be the leader of God's new kingdom. Muhammed's ''first-hand accounts'' were no different from any other ''first-hand accounts'' except that his was written 600 years after the death of Jesus and was a collection of earlier accounts. When Jesus resurrected doves and had a ''mind trick'' to cheat crucifixion is a story from the Gnostic gospels. There are many other examples. Also, Ethiopians/Eritreans never bombed Islamic sites, literally 50% of Eritrea is Muslim and almost 40% of Ethiopia is Muslim. To argue that my forefathers destructed Islamic history without any kind of evidence to back it up, not even from your Islamic sources is useless. We had no Islamic kings, the only sources that claimed so were Islamic ones, this is not a reliable way of collecting history. Thus, you do not have evidence. You know what they say: An argument without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.

Keep in mind that Amr bin Al-As, the man tasked with persuading the Najashi to give back the Arabs in this scene, is considered one of “duhat Al-Arab” meaning he was very sharp tongued and quick witted to the point that he can turn any situation to his favour through his cleverness. Yet even his words could not outshine the brightness of Islam as we saw in this historic scene. He even reverted to Islam himself later on as we see in the movie. Allahu Akbar.

Yeah this line of the Quran is so misunderstood by both Christians and Muslims today. It was never meant to deny that Allah (SWT) / God made Mary (RA) pregnant. It was just a clarification of how Mary (RA) was made pregnant. The Quran repeatedly admonishes people who denied the virgin conception of Mary (there were even some Christian sects denying this back in the day, unfortunately). The same Quran also admonished people who came to believe the Jinn were born of “the mating of God and angels”- I believe they’re referring to the story of the Nephalim, where angels and humans mated on earth. The Quran affirms that Allah (SWT) does not mate, because our Creator is not a sexual creature, He transcends creation. The Quran also affirms that fallen angels and jinn are born of fire. This line in the Quran was never meant to deny that Jesus (PBUH) is the “Son of God” in the sense of the virgin birth and his role as God’s messenger. It was meant to refute pagans (and some heretical Christian sects at the time) who thought God was mating with His creations, the same way Zeus made Hercules, or other similar pagan myths around the world that people were using as their frame of reference for (mis)understanding the story of Jesus (PBUH). The de-emphasis of the word “son” is simply to prevent this confusion, you have to remember that Arabia wasn’t coming from a monotheistic Creator deity religion the way Nazareth and Galilee were in Jesus’s (PBUH) time. Arabia was very, very pagan, and had some wild misconceptions about monotheism. Even Roman pagans during the time of Jesus (PBUH) had a pretty good idea what the Jewish people believe, because they had been ruling of Judea for a very long time and had Jewish subjects and vassal lords for a pretty long time. Arabia, on the other hand, was completely clueless. So it makes a lot of sense that the Quran just completely avoids using the word “son” for Jesus and focuses on his role as a messenger and messiah, because a lot of the early followers of Muhammad probably would have struggled to differentiate between “Son of God born of a virgin who remained a virgin even after becoming pregnant” and “lady who God got pregnant,” because a God who is able to speak reality into existence was a foreign concept. So the Quran heavily emphasizes teaching that God is nothing like a human, and can speak reality into existence, to better understand God’s nature. This doesn’t mean that God didn’t “beget” Jesus, it just depends on what you mean by “beget.” Most people would have misunderstood that in Muhammad’s time, non-sexual production is how God creates.
