The Mercy of God | The Book of Jonah | Gary Hamrick

01/05/2020
“Jonah and the Whale” is no doubt one of the most familiar stories in all of the Bible (although the word “whale” does not appear in any English translation of the book of Jonah… it simply says a “great fish” swallowed Jonah). However some dismiss the story as FICTIONAL (along the lines of Moby Dick), and others argue it’s only ALLEGORICAL (a picture of God’s love and forgiveness of sinners, but not a true story). Yet, Jesus mentioned it twice in Matthew’s gospel (Chapters 12 and 16) as a FACTUAL story. And that’s how we should interpret it too-a real story with real people and real events that illustrate a central theme: the mercy of God. We all need God’s mercy (His love, compassion, and kindness)! Join us for today’s study as Pastor Gary highlights 4 characteristics of God’s Mercy from the book of Jonah that are important for us to understand for our lives.

This story is factual, thanks pastor, may God increase you more. In this book, God used word like 'prepared' fish, which should be taken into consideration consideration before one can take the story as fictitious. With God, nothing is impossible. May God bless you all.

Jonah is the only book where more emphasis is put on the messenger instead of the message and I believe it is because of Jonah disobedience to the instructions of our all mighty GOD!

0:55 if you understand whale anatomy you’ll know that it’s impossible for a whale to swallow a human being. It states that God prepared the fish to devour Jonah. This was all supernatural so you can’t look at this from a natural standpoint. God performed supernatural acts the whole time with Jonah.

The story of Jonah actually happened and is a foregleam to the 3 days that Jesus was in the grave. So Jonah was, like Jesus, actually DEAD for 3 days, not alive. He was resurrected after the fish spat him out. Even Jesus mentioned the 'sign of Jonah' and Jonah said himself that he was in sheol (dead in the grave) for 3 days.

TQ Rabbi G for this beautiful msg on God's mercy for all. Jonah as u said was running opposite direction because he thought that Ninevites did not deserve God's mercy. I also think it maybe because he was scared of those ruthless people, he wud have thot that they might mutilate him or kill him. I maybe wrong but maybe u can correct me. I am being richly blessed by your studies. Thank u so much.

Jonah was sent to Nineveh ... Which means the habitation of ninus. Ninus means children ... which is the evolved word to nineos. Nineos is spanish for children. Both ninus and nineos sound very simular. The city of Nineveh is the city of Nimrod. The mighty hunter that stands before god. Through the power of god it was revealed to me. That the mighty hunter is a sardonic remark. As in. Yeah right!!! Because the mighty hunter hunts children to sacrifice and eat. And why Nineveh was the habitation of children because they hunted children from all the nieghboring cities. Eventually all those cities banded together to wipe Nimrod , which is a title like Caesar ... off the face of the earth. And why Jonah didn't want to go there. You go there ... you dont come out...
