Dennis Williams Franklyn , aka Merchant, was orphaned at eleven and grew up in an orphanage in Belmont, Trinidad. As an adult he led a troubled life , spending time in prison , becoming addicted to drugs , and dying of Hiv/Aids in 1999.
However he was one of our most gifted calypso composers, and created hits for many singers , including stars of the art-form like Bally , Baron , De Fosto , Crazy , Eddie Grant and many others.
He also wrote for bands like Atlantik and the internationally acclaimed Byron Lee and the Dragonaires. Merchant was also a fine performer and started his singing career in 1975 , but his breakout hits came in 1977 with “Umbayo” , and “Let No man judge”
In 1978 , Merchant made the first of two appearances at the Calypso Monarch Finals with his hit “Norman, is that you?” and “Think About the Children”. He was also one of the most brilliant , prolific calypso composers of all time, responsible for many classic calypso compositions for himself and many others. His compositions have withstood the test of time, and his impact on the calypso art-form should not be underestimated, nor forgotten. Dennis Williams Franklyn, aka Merchant died in 1999, five years after being diagnosed with HIV/Aids, another talented artist who left us way too soon. The Merchant had a tumultuous life. He was addicted to drugs and sexually promiscuous , which contributed to his illness and early death. Merchant lost his parents when he was very young and grew up in an orphanage where he learned to play the guitar. His calypso career began in 1975 when he appeared at Lord Kitchener's Revue. His calypsoes include:
• 1975 - Dreams of Unity
• 1976 - Carnival
• 1977 - Umbaya; Let No Man Judge
• 1978 - Norman Is That You?; Teach the Children
• 1985 - Pan in Danger; Caribbean Connection; Rock It
He wrote for Bally, Baron, Crazy, De Fosto, The Mighty Trini, Designer, Drupatee, Eddy Grant, Elsworth James, King Austin, Explainer, Errol Asche, and Leon Coldero, among others. He also wrote for bands that included Atlantik, Byron Lee and the Dragonaires and Leston Paul and the New York Connection. Merchant also produced four albums in his lifetime and recorded songs that have stood the test of time,

I have never commented on KZread until now. I agree 💯. I was at that show in Mas Camp that night. At that time Mighty Trini was supposedly his manager. I'm glad Leston Paul is on the bill, would love to hear what he has to say about their time together in the studio. ❤

I was about 4 years old when I first heard Merchant's "Driver" in 1980. 5 years later, I listened to his ROCK IT album and I fell in love with it entirely. May he rest in paradise.

Wow merchant Scrunter and Baron was always my favorite out of Trinidad as a youngster growing up in St Vincent and the grenadine , then Machel Machel came along, I never saw Merchant in person but I just know he was great at his craft , as a young man growing up people used to say that was gay but I never believed it and still don't so am glad that I saw this video so I could understand what he went through back in the day's and before he passed, but Merchant ,Scrunter, Baran and Machel will always be on the top of my list out of Trinidad .. They say that a good man is never horned in his own country.. Jah Live

Calypsonians truly show how selfish and oppressive they were to Merchant, especially as Merchant fell in love with cocaine! Such a gifted man and no one in his inner circle couldnt endeavour to help him into rehab man. This is so dam shameful. Listening to this man songs here is so sad to see how he wrote on everything you ccould think about. Fire bun all dem who dtole his works and claimit as their own!

Merchant (1943-1999) learned guitar 🎸 the art of composition from Mervyn Hodge- calypsonian Mighty Sniper- Portrait of Trinidad (1965 Calypso Monarch). His first exposure goes back to 1975 with Lord Kitchener. According to another interview, Merchant said on Calypso Showcase w/ Alvin Daniell his first composition was "Carnival"- not "Um Ba Ya Oh" (1977/1978). Lady V, yuh skip a song my dear!! 😂. His earliest songs include "Norman, Is That You" (1976)- name of the film w/ Redd Foxx & the double entendre "Come & Take It". The first LP that comes to mind would be Dr. Soca (1979) music 🎶 🎵 supplied by Ed Watson & The Brass Circle. In the 1980s' his material included "Rock It," "Pan In Danger," "Caribbean Connection," & "Be Careful," all released in 1985. "Paranoid" (1986), "Ah Coming Too" (1987) music by Leston Paul. He said that he would hang out with saxophonist Roy Cape (of Roy Cape All Stars) & Ron Berridge during his early days living in the orphanage. He said that he would play the guitar 🎸 by ear & that he had a photographic memory. Unfortunately, this is only one side of the story. What you are not 🚫 hearing is his addiction to drugs (Lady V, I hope you don't hold this against me). Even Alvin Daniell will attest to the fact that he was a drug addict. If l also remember carefully, in the mid 1970s,' Merchant went to jail on a charge of rape (if anybody want to help me out, feel free to). Of course, you know the rest of this story. In 1994, he contracted AIDS (check ✔️ out a tribute show of Calypso Showcase on Alvin Daniell's KZread page). You will see Merchant strumming guitar on stage, and you could see him suffering & and question, "What did I do wrong?" "What did I do to deserve this?" Not knocking Merchant because even I know from personal experience (as we all do), life 🧬 is not easy. Like my mother would say, "Your deeds are walking behind you" My tantie (aunt) would say "Karma is a bitch"!!!! 😂 🤣 Merchant died in 1999 of complications of AIDS. Rest in Eternal Peace & Paradise 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊 Sir.

Good Night Caribbean Insight. Merchant was a great singer.this song got a lot of air play rock it with me.One of his song.that also got a lot of air play was.Eletric Avenue was sang by E. Grant.Also Norman is that you that was a nice wakup song. in those days still is.Mrs Boxhill just remember a king is never honor in his own country.Remember The mighty Sparrow in 1966 knighted Garfield Sobers as Sir.before the Queen Elizabeth.one day he will be honor it will be a little late that's ok.Remember Byron Lee great singer was honor after he pass.Mrs Boxhill.why don't you call Barbados to the central bank and ask questions don't give up.what you are been told don't sound right iam a Bajan.that is the bank that send large somes of money out of Barbados.god bless

Found out about the late great Dennis Merchant through my Stepfather. He is an avid fan. Been listening to Merchant since the early 90s... I was born in 1985, so that should say something.

Merchant I have nothing good to say about merchant in the seventys to me he was a thief in Brooklyn probably he was a star to you he caused me lots of trauma him and Jemma merchant forget about him bastard
