The mercenary boom: How private military contractors are redefining modern warfare | DW News

Prigozhin's armed mutiny was the clearest example of the danger posed by mercenary groups, but not an isolated one. In recent years, mercenary groups have made a comeback, and we are not ready for it. As the world shifts away from its previous bipolar structure, it also seems to revert to age-old practices. On top of that, plausible deniability is another important factor that’s resurrecting mercenary groups. Beyond Wagner, who are the emerging mercenary groups, where do they operate and why are they making a comeback?

@@edgychico9311My brother told me the MASSIVE gulf in training and strategy as well as better equipment means it's not even close to a fair fight. Mercs are selected from various special forces then they get additional training and 90% of there work is training or advising other forces. They'll be in the Philippines for 3 months, then Turkmenistan then Eritrea then Bolivia. Sometimes it's providing additional security for the military to set up logistics, sometimes its helping plan ops and sometimes it's just training soldiers on new equipment. But if they're employed to engage they have soo much of an advantage it's almost like a professionals vs kids. Not to mention they're military planners usually don't care about individual lives but big operational goals whereas mercs plan not to have ANY casualties leading to disproportionate deaths on the otherside. US special forces are the best in the world not just because of their training and experience but because they never engage unless ALL the advantages from airsupport, evac routes, satellite data ect are all in their favour they always attack at night because they have the best night vision in the world. Mercs are not just guns for hire

War.... has changed. It's no longer about nations, ideologies, or ethnicity. It's an endless series of proxy battles, fought by mercenaries and machines. War--and it's consumption of life--has become a well-oiled machine. War has changed. ID-tagged soldiers carry ID-tagged weapons, use ID-tagged gear. Nanomachines inside their bodies enhance and regulate their abilities.Genetic control, information control, emotion control, battlefield control... everything is monitored and kept under control.War... has changed. The age of deterrence has become the age of control, all in the name of averting catastrophe from weapons of mass destruction, and he who controls the battlefield, controls history.War... has changed. When the battlefield is under total control, war becomes routine.

The US asked Russia to withdraw their forces to which the Russian's responded that they aren't Russia or under their control. The US then bombed the units. It was a chess-game and the Russians miscalculated. But there was no "invoking" or plausible deniability. This is the kind of journalism that passes for fact? This is borderline misinformation the way you had that expert distort the facts, anyone with knowledge of the truth would have a problem with that.

I'm not sure you understand. We've evolved because we were able to kill our pray and out produce our competitors. Evolution is the process of natural selection, or the ability to consume and reproduce without being eaten or killed by something else. We are violent, ambitious, cunning, and wage war because we evolved that way, it is a testament to our evolution. War will continue as long as we have ambition and over populate this world with its' finite resources. It isn't evolution or intelligence that humanity is lacking, it is wisdom and empathy. Can we evolve to be more wise or empathetic? Maybe, but the benefit aren't as staight forward from an evolutionary and physical standpoint as lets say shanking your rival and stealing their stuff (you can extrapolate this example to a local regional or global level). I'm not defending war. War is terrible. One of the worst things that can possibly exist. I'm being realistic and pointing out that war has been essential for our existence. With out war, the powerful would kill us and we wouldn't be able to fight back. That would be more akin to murder. It takes two sides to fight a war, if only one side is fighting it is merely a massacre.

Also serious point - the UK is over reliant on nukes and the navy and has ignored building up an army. In the probably inevitable confrontation I suspect it'll be cheaper and easier to just hire mercenaries, especially when you realise how many ex British soldiers now do it. Add to that PMC's with similar military doctrine and common languages (South African, Australian, Canadian PMC's) or those who have traditionally been friends (Ghurka PMC's) we may well see more in Western Europe. Especially as it's full of rich countries who are suddenly realising they have been relying too much on Uncle Sam who may well say "there's nothing in it for us to risk nuclear war for no real gain of us doing the heavy lifting"

Most PMC contractors are not mercenaries, the word gets thrown around a lot and some don't mind. This goes for many PMC companies including what was once called Blackwater. Most of them do force protection of bases, VIP and route security, sorry those are not mercenaries. The mercenary contracting on the U.S. side you don't hear much about unless something goes very bad. And no the fact that Russia used Wagner to attack American military in Syria did not prevent WW3.

Someone is not done their proper research. The Blackwater incident was in 2007. In the original footage shown to the news the day after show them taking fire from all around for almost 4 minutes before they return fire. By the second day of reporting that part of the footage was no longer shown.

Even though there are huge differences between Western and Russian private armies, it is not a good idea for any Western country to have one. When you break the rules and make the exception to have the private armies, your enemies can do the same at much worse.

For Russia, Prigozhin, a thug who had worked for Putin, was an answer to what to do when the Russian army was hemorrhaging troops. A thug and gangster was able to take crimminals from Russian prisons to train for his mercenary army. For serving in the Wagner forces these ex-cons would earn a pardon no matter what horrible crimes had brought them into prison.
