I worked for Triple Canopy for close to 4.5 years after finishing up one re-enlistment in the 82nd 1st/504th as an 11B and talking to quite a few of the PMC’s in our AO as I was blown away by their pay scale and it’s not like these guys were all SF qualified shooters with beards that qual expert, they were 11B’s from the various units just like me. During my time with TC I firmly believe that we were able to successfully change the strategic environment of the AO’s that we were operational in as well as routinely being able to achieve objectives in an exponentially faster manner than it would take an infantry platoon to. After TC I worked for a few smaller, but well respected firms before finding a home at 4GS where I currently work. The one thing I can tell you from my experiences in the world is that China does not have quantifiable real world combat experience, which in turn creates leaders, it forces you to train and kit differently out of necessity and survival, when you have large former state sponsored militaries that downsize there’s always an influx into the PMC world. I can promise you that regardless of the Geneva Convention, well known American PMC groups were utilized in illegal ways, although they were actions that directly supported coalition forces and their mission objectives. Ever since Executive Outcomes came out of nowhere and forced 20,000+ strong RUF rebels to the negotiating table with a little over 100 shooters people started to take notice, the UN spent close to $75,000,000 rotating peace keeping forces into the Congo and their presence had little to no effect, the RUF continued raping and pillaging daily because what needed to be done wasn’t peace keeping but an offensive campaign to liquidate and cripple the groups existence.

This is brutal irony in the efficiency of a PMC. the trick is really the link to the Party, and not the military. in case of domestic turmoil, and internal divisions within power, they will respond to Party orders. in foreign states, this is a massive power projection element. the huge number commands attention to western military, and politics too. but I guess, China is already given quite a lot a attention, taking on the World in front of our eyes :)

Here in the Netherlands we had a similar company (Dutch East Indies Coy) which operated pretty much the same (and I don't know which one came first). And the video does not mention contemporate, 'western' mercenary companies. Japan was doing the same thing from the start of their boom years in the '70s until their economic collapse in the '90s. It was always seen as "graduation" for those picked from the Self Defense Force to be brought into the "real" corporate security military. South America saw a lot of this in particular. At one point there were more "former" Japanese soldiers in Chile than Chilean soldiers. This became an issue for the US in the late '80s and a few attempts by Japanese corporations to purchase ports in the US were thwarted by a brand new laws targeting heavily armed corporate security by restricting the weapons security forces were allowed to use.

If you want to really go back in History, the British East India Company took over all of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh with only 2,000 Official British Government Soldiers. They actually controlled an Army of over 200,000 at most, controlled by British Officers, with some Regiments entirely European, although the vast majority of the Soldiers were locals with a grudge against a neighbour. This Caper has been happening for hundreds of years, and the USA isn't entirely innocent. Smedley Butler, a decorated US Marine General, wrote a book called War is a Racket, detailing how US Business interests dictated where the US Military was deployed. This isn't a new phenomenon invented by the Chinese. While I'm saying it has happened for a long time, I don't think it's a good practice. I can't think of any smaller Nation that has benefitted from the Deal.

The main issue of developing nations is that they don’t have the infrastructure to create the training nor the capital to attract/retain the skilled workforce. Even if they manage to train out some highly skilled workers by focusing resources, they’d get siphoned off to other countries really quickly because they’d get paid way more. China doesn’t have to negotiate good rates for these countries since no body else can compete with them in terms of available cash and risk tolerance. I’m sure those 80+ countries all understand this and aren’t just taking out loans for no reason.

He does good videos but the us does not really issue loans. They give a bond at 1 percent to the imf and the imf gives out the loans with 10 percent or more loan arrangement fees. 10 percent on loans that can be billions! So the country owes 10 percent in kickbacks to billionaires and they are often not even American. Americans are also unaware that isreal has visa free travel to Russia and that Israel does not take part in the Russian sanctions. They have reviewed over a billion a week from the us for 50 years and now they are getting filthy rich dealing sanctioned Russian goods. The CCP doesn't just make loans without security - their loans include provisions for China to own the assets if the host country defaults. This may not mean much if the project is a road (although they could toll a road) but ports and harbors are valuable assets. In short, at least some of these projects would become Chinese assets that have value. The host country would have no recourse once it defaults. The other factor is these projects have little or no transparency, so if they are dramatically overvalued the prospect of default just works to the advantage of China.

Yes and no. If the CCP causes a fundamental collapse in these small countries because of this tactic it will be increasingly precarious to actually use their assets. Many rebel factions will be spawned and insurgent warfare will ensue. The US occupation of Iraq is a litmus test for this modern way of puppet control. A power vacuum will always give rise to destabilization, and on the scale of China’s exploitation it’s something totally unprecedented and unmanageable. You forgot to mention that the Philippines had to cancel its retirement visa after over 35000 Chinese males all of fighting age took the visa. Philippines is strategically important to both Western and Eastern governments. Subic Bay being a strategic stronghold in the upcoming struggle for Taiwan. actually China annexed two Philippine islands both have large natural and oil gas reserves under them, the Philippines govt didn't care at first but now they do, but can't do nothing because the US isn't there anymore. USA will not defend Philippines like it will Taiwan, plus China does not want to destroy Taiwan, it want the chip fab plants just like the |USA needs access to em. China has already claimed some islands, has built or is building others which it claims is Chinese territoy, that in ancient times China controlled the SCS - well it destroyed its own navy in the 1440's, forbade long distance travel and trade and did not reapper till after '47. They have every intention of claiming the Ocean based on this idiotic "history" and these fake islands - all just big enough to fit troop transport aircraft to land

I wonder if the assessment I keep hearing, that the Chinese have absolutely no combat experience, is accurate. Perhaps if one looks deeper there is actually a core of operational experience and combat-experienced personnel they can call up. It’s a mistake to violate the first rule of war; NEVER underestimate your enemy.

That’s a good assessment but you could have said the same thing about Russia before they went into Ukraine with their Wagner group. The problem being that even if a country has a small group of soldiers who’ve seen combat it doesn’t mean 1-their army will use their experience well, 2-that those troops have experience in modern mechanized warfare on a large scale (or any other relevant experience), or 3- that those mercenaries with experience will go far in a million+ man army. I agree that it isn’t ever good to underestimate your enemy, but overestimating them can be equally bad as it can let them bluff you into giving them something you really shouldn’t.

Chinese military reforms a few years ago included a 40% in salary raise for mid level officers and bottom NCOs. It could be similar in idea to the Wehrmacht before WWII: train up a group of professional officers and worry about expanding the army with private recruits later.

Great video and I think it would be great to have a comparison of these "companies", because haven't we seen that all over the world with nearly all major powers having similar setups - sometimes more sometimes less direct political influence - in the last 10 to 15 years? Sometimes the political influence is more subtle with e.g. retired generals and politicians etc. being on the board but often the connections are there. So it is a grey area worth looking at!

Maybe, but Ukraine has a larger manpower pool and constant Western support. While not likely that there will be urban combat in Kherson, there’s a possibility that the Russian army might have to abandon the positions. At the end of the day the main objective is the Donbas where they’re making slow but steady gains.

The problem only arises if its expensive to achieve that destruction against the enemy. Russia is wise to use artillery because its cheap. Ukraine's main mistake besides trying to become a bulwark for NATO while only a few hundred miles from the heart of Russian power, is fighting a conventional war. They lost the war before is started in Feb but they didn't need to lose this many men losing the war. But what can you expect when their command and control is the US. Of course that is a command that has very little interest in the lives of Ukrainian soldiers.

One thing these also provide is field experience for soldiers. Drills and exercises are great, but actual combat is something quite different, and these companies offer an opportunity to get into real fights.

@@laststand6420 the first time you see one of your friends get shot or blown up is a hard moment, even if they’re not badly injured. Killing people is also something a lot of people aren’t comfortable about. While the technology and challenge might be different, the brutal realities of war take some adjustment and pushing over technicals might not be hard, it provides an opportunity for those “this is not an exercise, they’re actually trying to kill you” experiences.

@@Taskandpurpose Where is the 1% and 4% Chinese debt number come from ? Sri Lanka has more debt to the West like Black Rock/IMF or other government/corporations. Only country I have seen is Ethiopia that has a lot of Chinese debt.

A lot of countries in the world, the so-called "hollow states," have local warlords in charge of certain regions. They all have a nominal central government, but there is an understanding between it and the regional warlord that the warlord calls the shots in his region. So far, this warlord tends to be some indigenous local strongman able to seize and keep power. But it's not like warlordism is a properly regulated market that bars entry to foreign nationals. And in fact, Afghan warlords near the Iranian border receive a lot of support from Iran, and they maintain power largely thanks to that support - which has strings attached, of course. We can go so far as to say that Iran de facto controls areas of Afghanistan. Now imagine that China finds something of value within one of these many hollow states, and they decide they want to come in and take it. They make a deal with the warlord of the day that Chinese mercenary firms will give him protection and Chinese companies will give him kickbacks in exchange for his non-interference. The really interesting and not wholly unrealistic scenario is one where the Chinese mercenary forces are strong enough to defeat incursions from the country's government army. This way they can basically control chunks of the world through imperialist colonialism, but do it all without arousing much attention. In some ways we are very lucky that the CCP requires a controlling stake in the mercenary firm, because with this rule, there is no plausible deniability. My horror scenario is that some unscrupulous mercenary group picks a hollow state like Somalia, decides that it's strong enough to claim and defend some marginal territory there, and then starts making illegal drugs there on an industrial scale and exporting them to the entire world. Or consider this: A "legit" mercenary group like Blackwater gets a contract from some Somali strongman who "owns" beachfront property and wants to develop it into a resort region for foreign tourists, which will need to be kept absolutely safe. Foreign states could literally build substantial colonies in this way, as long as they have the firepower to defend them. The only danger to such colonies would come from the central government getting its act together and legitimately expelling the colonizing powers, so to prevent that the colony would have to make sure to keep the central government weak and hollow and corrupt.

And yet there are examples of foreign intervention gone wrong, even including the use of paramilitaries or private groups operating on behalf of economic interests... But alot of governments are relying on contracts to avoid legal fiascos if they can make those countries a better place it may be better if they are offering jobs and development.
