The Medieval Angels at Cawston

I visit Cawston church in Norfolk with my drone, and with some superb and never-before-seen footage, I present you the extraordinary fifteenth-century angel roof that graces the church's nave. I talk about the angels, what they represent and their purpose within the complex iconography of a medieval church interior.

The workmanship of that roof structure is quite staggering! The drone certainly allows a fascinating viewpoint which very few people would have seen for a very long time.
I think this your best video yet, Dr Barton. The superb close up ohotography and your clear exposition of Catholic theology are perfectly in sync. How wonderful that this magnificent roof and its angels have survived - it must be quite the spiritual experience to worship in such a building.
i very much appreciated the catholic context being mentioned, it can feel somewhat ignored when visiting historic English churches and leafing through pamphlets and reading the informational signage. I dont dream of a catholic Reconquista, and i respect Anglicanism mightily, but it is a rather sad feeling to be a bit of an outsider in a space that seems to resonate with my own faith. I wonder if we could share a bit.

Very often the English historians act as if their Roman Catholic history, (with its ornate churches that were adorned with elaborate and decorative images) was a different land, a different country!
I’m so thankful that Henry VIII, Edward VI and Oliver Cromwell’s Parliamentarian’s iconoclasts didn’t destroy this glorious church and its sacred art works! I also bless those people through the centuries who have lovingly cared for this beautiful building. This is the most wonderful church that you’ve shared with us yet. Thank you so much!
One of the most beautiful things to mostly survive the stripping of the altars. Superb work - by you Allan.
Excellent. What a fantastic use of the drone!

This is one of the reasons I desperately wanted one, I had Cawston in mind from the very beginning. As well as the footage, it took some incredible photos too.
Dr Allan, thank you so much for showing us this master piece of a medieval ceiling. The statues haven’t been seen like that for 550 years. Truly epic work! Fascinating stuff. Absolutely love this channel.
Thank you so much for this! I will never be able to travel and see this surviving marvel of English Catholic art, but you have placed it right here in my sitting room for me to enjoy over and over again! Seeing these glimpses of the love the laity had for their Lord expressed in art and architecture doubles the sadness and grief one feels for everything that was needlessly destroyed. Thank God he made it possible for these fragments to survive. Thank you once again for everything you do.
Thank you. “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord …” As a Catholic, I deeply appreciate how, unlike so many British “heritage sites” on You Tube, you do not present anti-Catholic propaganda as a matter of course.

Just made time to watch this, as have been to Cawston. Everything about it blew me away. But seeing this roof up close is such a privilege. Thank you!
THIS is among those reasons that I first began following you several years ago, Allan, and with this installment you have again managed to captivate me and give my interest a further boost. I give thanks that the reformers did not get to destroy this English Medieval treasure. Thank you. And yes, the drone footage is exceptional!

Thank you! Glad you appreciate the drone footage too!
I am amazed at the craftsmanship and the amount of adornment the builders put in to something that really can’t be seen, at least from the floor. I can only imagine how bright and beautiful it must have been when it was painted. Thank you for bringing us to this beautiful church.
That roof vaguely reminds me of the nave in the Cathedral of Cuenca, a small 12-13th century gothic cathedral in central Spain. The triforia is made of a trefoiled tracery in front of the clerestory and the tracery is supported by life sized angels instead of mullions, very interesting and probably of a similar symbolism.
Wonderful video as always. Thanks. There is a remarkable painted hammer beam roof located in a now unfortunately derelict RC church in Arbor Hill in Albany, NY. Constructed with Irish Erie Canal workers money, it was built in the late 1850's for an Irish Order, and was consecrated as St. Joseph's Church. I worked with Historic Albany to purchase the Church from the Diocese, and later the City of Albany took it over and stabilized it, as movement of the SE transept pillar was beginning to undermine the roof. If you have a moment there are some great interior pictures of the roof, taken in 2005 when the building was stabilized. The polychromed angels with their wings are breathtaking to behold. You are a sane and gentle voice in an increasingly turbulent world. Greetings from our mountain top in the beautiful Hudson Valley.
Magnificent church and video! Thank you, Allan.
Once again, I do love your church visits. And this one is remarkable. Thank you, Alan

That roof is utterly spectacular! I can just imagine how stunning it would be painted.
Always a good day when you upload
Modern technology allowing us an unique 'float through' view of this wonderful roof. Many thanks for all you do to bring us these gems of local medieval architecture!
Thanks Allan. Children who are fans of Dr. Who might run screaming from this church. Every time you said hammer beam, I heard it as cherubim.

What a fantastically produced video! The drone really adds something
Strange to think the congregation would never have got a good look at these carvings.
That wooden roof is a marvel!
Thank you. Brilliant presentation and video.
Your disquisition on the decor of the church and its purpose and symbolism was beautifully stated. Thanks for this.
I love the kind of angels with feathered feet, they are deeply endearing. Less *"fear not!"* than "mortal, I am a terrifying enforcement of divine will, no, really, have you any idea what kind of power...well, I suppose you can stroke me, just make sure you don't get incinerated leaning in front of the concentrated holiness of my many burning eyes..."
wow, what a treasure

Thank you, Allan, for the terrific drone work allowing us to see this amazing architecture up close! I'll most likely never be able to visit the places you take us to but your videos and commentary are the next best thing.
How beautiful. I cannot believe how big the angels are. Over 6" - that's enormous. The stunning hammer beam roof still standing strong after 500+ years - amazing! Thank you for your work.

The Cawston angels are truly extraordinary works of art. It is hard to imagine now but churches then were highly decorated in vibrant colours. Imagine these six foot two angels, with painted peacock feathers that look like eyes from the ground! Awe inspiring now as it was 550 years ago. The level of craftsmanship in wood in the 15th century really was sublime. Thank you Allan for taking Kermit to this marvellous Norfolk church.

Fabulous church, and beautiful commentary! Thank you for a lovely video. The little drone is a great tool for showing the detail of that amazing ceiling!
Thank you very much for this video, I might be a Pagan of the Wiccan Religion for the last 28 years but I do appreciate Church's and Gothic Achitecture and this is one of the most beautiful Hammerbeam I've ever seen with some impressive carvings, way cool. 😊😊❤❤❤⛪
Amazing, look at the paintings….just so wonderful.
Magnificent, thank you!
My eyes were immediately drawn to the shields of arms. It reminds me of the shields painted at Ängsö church and Linköping cathedral in Sweden were the coats of arms of patrons and royals stand in heraldic and liturgical communication with the arma Christi. The analysis herein about the church being an icon and a window to the tancendental heavenly realm is very potent in medieval churches, not least so through modes of communication popular at the time such as heraldry. Truly the medieval church was a masterwork of liturgical communication. I say this as I've just finished my theological bachelor's thesis wherein I've looked at the heraldic communication as it related to the liturgy in medieval Sweden. Good stuff.
I love the drone! I can’t wait to visit Norfolk! I think this church is on my list!❤❤❤

Just lovely, Allan. All through this upload I was wondering how these artifacts survived the zeal of the iconoclasts, and I was going to ask about this down herein, but as ever you are conscientious in your narrative _sujets_ Allan, so there we go, you ended with just what I wanted to know. Thank you for making my day with all of this. 💙

I would like to think that in the midst of their heartbreak at seeing their beloved parish church so vandalized, the people who for generations had been baptized and married there and buried their forebears from there, could at least look up to the ceiling and whisper, "But we still have the angels."
A pleasure to watch

I wish there was an artist who could show the angels as they were originally painted. I always picture the worn versions, almost sterile in stone or weathered wood. The idea of an angel decked in peacock feathers and gold is jsut amazing.

Lovely video and an amazing Church, thank you. You lament (correctly) the destruction of so much medieval art and watching the videos it's shocking finding out how much was destroyed. And you find yourself wondering "how" the people did that to their own treasures, their own heritage. But perhaps the thinking was that it all would be replaced eventually? People would still carve wood, still stain glass, still sculpt in stone, still paint the images, still hand weave tapestries ect. ect.. Perhaps modified but the artistry wouldn't be lost. Why would it be? Machinery and the industrial age was still a long way off. Whereas nowadays I think we are very aware that the pace of change is so exaggerated, anything that's lost will never get replaced. It could be perhaps, but there's always a new machine, a new method, a new material, something "new", something cheaper and more efficient. That can be argued is better. There's much less sense of continuity. If it goes now, it's gone forever. Also those angels weren't destroyed because they couldn't get a long enough ladder? For what, hundreds of years? So really how much religious zeal was there for destroying things once the easy targets had been dealt with for show?
Magnificent stuff

Has anyone else read Ken Follet, Pillars of the Earth? It was a mandatory read when I was at University and my final was on this 800 page read. When I started the book, I had four days before final, however, this gripping book took me back in time and I couldn’t put it down! I believe this book sparked my interest in church’s and those that built them. I highly recommend! Now I have Dr. Barton sparking my interest and edification in this area! ❤
