The Meaning of Everything Everywhere All At Once

What is the purpose of our existence?
Instead of reading obscure existentialist philosophy or meditating on a park bench until the grass speaks to you, why not watch the outstanding new movie, Everything Everywhere All at Once?
Just trust us on this one…
Michelle Yeoh and Stephanie Hsu star as a frustrated mother-daughter pair operating a laundromat being audited by the IRS (enough to send anyone into existential despair). While Yeoh’s character Evelyn shakes her fists at the sky in response to her stymied existence, she soon encounters a glitch in the matrix which changes her life forever.
Jump through the wormhole with us while we search for the antidote to nihilism and pursue purpose on this episode of Out of Frame.

I feel like gradually, we are seeing a shift in culture AWAY from nihilism. this movie represents this as one of the first big artistic "attacks" on those ideas. I think that culturally, we are getting tired of the endless "nothing matters" nonsense in media (which is the one thing that truly doesn't matter) and we might finally beginning to move forward again. Weather out of spite, love, kindness, stoicism or naivety. Yes life is suffering. Yes we all die. but you know what? we are alive right now god damn it and it's fucking stupid to disregard all the friends, family, hobbies, stories, adventures, struggles, problems, and our love as "nothing". Reject "nothing matters" embrace "it matters to me damnit"

@@a.39886 Your situation in life isn't a gamble. You are born into the version of the world that your parents created, for better or worse. You are who you are today because of all of your experiences, good and bad, and because of every choice you've ever made, good and bad. It isn't at all random, like you say. That's why I and many others want to have kids, because we can choose how to raise them, and in doing so, we can help make the world a better place even after we're dead, in ways we won't even be able to predict. For example, Jack Churchill. 16th century English Lord, didn't do much with his life apart from some decent military service. However, his descendant, more than 300 years after his death, was Winston Churchill, the man who saved Britain from Hitler and arguably was one of the two men whose combined efforts saved the world from Nazi occupation. The other being Georgy Zhukov. Without those two men each leading their respective country through the war, Britain and Russia would've both fallen, as Germany would've been able to crush one before focusing all of its might on the other. If Jack Churchill had never had children, Chamberlain would've led Britain through the war and they would've become a German puppet. The saying "children are the future" is cliche, but very accurate. Even the greatest man on earth, whoever you believe that to be, will die eventually. Through our children, we can ensure that our best qualities as a species carry on to the future

This movie also shows how even the simplest and most unremarkable events should be cherished as life changing memories. Not only is this shown in a literal sense but it also presents how if you experience everything you feel nothing. It teaches the viewer to value the most mundane moments in life specially with close ones, as you won't know how much you value something until it's gone. In other words, don't take life for granted, value every second and take the opportunity before you regret it.

@@a.39886 I think a lot of that misunderstanding stems from the perspective that children are beholden to their parents, and that they owe their parents any care or respect. Rather, I think that it is the willing choice of the parents to have the kids, and so the responsibility of the parents to provide a meaningful and fulfilling life for their kids- most of which is to be done through teaching them how to interact with the different parts of life in a healthy manner. If you have that perspective, then the children aren't forced to live a life that is cruel against their will- The parents made a choice to have children, and so if the children have a poor life, it's the failure and cruelty of the parents, rather than the fault of "life lottery", in almost all cases. Things can of course go wrong, but a major part of parenting is teaching kids how to make it past the things that go wrong, and to still enjoy the life that happens during all of their goals, setbacks, and achievements. Much more than our circumstances, our mentality affects whether we suffer through life, or enjoy it. I'm sure people struggling with depression can relate to having days that go almost perfectly, only to still feel alone and sad still. Or people with great struggles, but positive mentality thinking that life is fulfilling for them.

Final Fantasy 14 touches on how nihilism destroys people. The conclusion the game comes to is that one must continue to struggle to find meaning in life. This was contained in one of the most elegant lines I have ever read. “Walk Free” Meaning while some may have the ability to fly freely over all obstacles this can lead to nihilism as nothing seems to matter. However when one must climb the mountain the individual gains meaning through their effort. They walk so they remain free.

But I recognize the good in faith, in my case the Christian faith of my family and ancestors even though by the time I was born my parents were no longing practising. It's not merely a religion but a tangible link to my heritage and culture, a blueprint with helpful advice to be a kind, loving person. I may not *believe* with certainty there is a God, but I *want* there to be one. At the end of the day it is a tremendous comfort to know that through all the suffering of life there is a light in the darkness. We both looked into the abyss, but when it looked back at us, you blinked.” The line is Batman’s, and it’s impactful because he says it to Owlman, an evil alternate version of Batman who believes that the only meaningful thing to do is kill everything. Owlman is the ultimate Nihilist, who believes that nothing matters so much that he isn’t even angry or disappointed or scared when he dies. Batman on the other hand, is anything but.

From being bullied in school, struggling financially, leaving my family to live in an unknown city by myself, loneliness, being discriminated against and attacked because of my race. But thinking about what I suffered throughout life made me realize that I’m glad that i suffered. I’m glad that I was able to experience these pains than never experiencing them at all. Maybe I’m a masochist, idk. But what I do know, is that without all that suffering, I wouldn’t know what it feels to appreciate. Just as its impossible to rid the world of pain, its impossible to rid the world of happiness, if theres no happiness pain can't really exist as theres nothing to give it much meaning or weight, without pain you can't get or appreciate the value of life. It was never "nothing matters" It was "if nothing matters, anything can matter." And as it turns out, Everything does.

Great video, great movie. I remember being impressed with the movie because there were many interpretations that were possible. You covered the nihilism angle very well, but there was another theme touching on the growing divisiveness in our society. But for me, because of what's happening in my life right now, I saw a story about how young adults in crisis can permanently reject their parents if their parents don't work hard to maintain the relationship. Even when *they* don't want to. *Especially* when they don't want to.

As a person of faith, I agree with you, you can find meaning in life even if you don't believe in a higher power. Think about it, what a miracle it is that out of billions of planets and solar systems, in this vast universe filled with "nothing", life happened on our beautiful Earth. How wonderful it is. There may be life out there (and I believe there is), but we have yet to find it. For now, it is just us on this bouncing ball in the void of the universe. And not only are we the lucky ones, but how lucky are we that out of all possible life on Earth, we were born humans. Now I'm gonna go give this movie a shot. I wasn't really interested in it until this video 😛 Also, this video reminded me of one of my favorite songs, "The Riddle" by Five for Fighting, I think it touches on the same question, what's the meaning of life.

For me there are two amazing things about this film. One is Michelle Yeoh’s performance which is a million miles away from her in real life. Fragile, lacking confidence, inept, serious, frightened. You would never associate any of these things with the badasses she is used to playing. And two is Ke Huy Quan who steals the film from her AND YET does not diminish her amazing performance. How is that possible? They are incredible in this and add to that the simple themes (I call it “Monty Python presents Its a Wonderful Multiverse Life”) and you have a film that will endure for decades. No sequels, please.

I actually think separating nihilism into pessimistic nihilist and optimistic nihilism is the way to go here. Nihilists of both sides of the coin know that the universe doesn't care about anything, and there is no intrinsic meaning, but while pessimistic nihilists let that reality consume them and fill them with negativity, optimistic nihilists shrug their shoulders and say, "So what if the universe doesn't care anout us? We make our OWN meaning." and in effect they seem like they aren't nihilist at all, except just like the pessimistic ones, they accept that the universe doesn't care, but they don't let it bring them down or change how they act. Because in the end, does it really change anything? We exist, we live, and we can find hope and love in that existence if we just embrace the moment. Intrinsic meaning need not apply.

I could be wrong but that split between the pessimistic\optimistic sides of nihilism is how I interpreted "the middle way" in Buddhism. The middle way is the path between nihilism and essentialism where you acknowledge both the objective meaninglessness of the world and your ability for you\your life to have subjective meaning.

Existentialism is a type of nihilism. They both assume there is no objective truth or meaning to existence, existentialism just takes it a step further and says you can create your own subjective meaning. The example in the film as you point out is Waymond. It's a good example on the surface, until you realize Waymond did actually abandon hope in the face of adversity--he was threatening divorce because it was too much for him. Philosophies that answer hard questions don't exist to help you get through the good times--we don't need help with that, we enjoy it. Philosophies exist to help you get through the bad times; and existentialism is the flower, but nihilism is the root. Existentialism won't see you through hard times. Soul searching isn't comfortable, but if you really like thought experiments here's one: you find meaning in your work? What if you met with an accident and was no longer able to work? No longer able to contribute to humanity's progress, would you still have value? Would your life still have meaning? Why? This type of thinking also means there will always be humans who hold no meaning to you, people you will deem worthless, even if you like entertaining the idea that all lives have meaning. If there isn't a single thing that encompasses all human beings to say we have value and meaning, then there will always be those who should just die, and make way for the valuable people (I don't believe this, I'm just following the logic). Existentialism is the ultimate in ignoring the problem by distracting yourself with good things without stopping to ask why they are good. It works for a time, but only in a prosperous culture without too many pressing issues. Best case scenario you live happy and distracted, then lie there on your deathbed, comfortless and with nothing to look forward to, waiting for it all to end, and you wind back up where you started--nihilism. Reading that back, it sounds kinda depressing, but there's a reason religion has been around thousands of years, and these new philosophies pop up for a while, then fade away. Do some research into countries that don't permit religious missionary visas--government policies aside, they are often the most receptive to religious ideas. The idea that suffering is the meaning of life is found in Judaism, Christianity, and I think Buddhism--and it's not something Victor Frankl chose, it was a revelation. Interesting that you use a religious person as a real-world example.

You can't even use words, because they have meaning, or at least by using words you're implying they do. You can't even think.

The point of Nihilism reminds me of an execution device that I read about in a book. I don't remember the book but maybe it was; 'The Phantom Tollbooth'. A narcist is placed into a machine powered by a sponge cake, that shows the person relating to the machine, then to the place the he is at, then the city, country and on and on until it shows the massive size of the universe. This is supposed to show how utterly insignificant one is and as a result they perish. But in the case of this character he steps out of the machine as happy as can be and he says; "In all the universe it was me that is pointed out!" He proceeds to eat the sponge cake as he happily goes his way.

Nihilism is an easy escape from our own failures or mistakes, escape from confrontation with the responsibilities that inherently comes with giving meaning to our actions. Having meaning defines what's real in our minds. Like it was said in free guy "If sharing a coffee, sitting here with my freind is not real. Then I don't know what's real"

I believe there is real value in the mantra, "be kind." The movie (and many real people) cling to it for its protection against the madness of the abyss. They come to it through both desperation and an almost instinctual recognition that there is something fundamentally good in kindness. However, it can go no further than this vague sense. The movie argues for kindness with an emotional appeal and the claim that you'll (probably) be happier for it. The whole thing just makes me sad, because I absolutely believe there is real good in kindness. In fact, I believe we were made for love, and to be loved. This is our nature. This is our purpose. And in it, we find meaning, peace, and joy. However, rather than stumbling to this truth blindly, out of panic and vague intuition, I see them as easy and logical conclusions of my Christian faith. Enerything Everywhere All At Once argues for nihilism, and then fumbles a refutation that could not matter more.

While I agree about nihilism being a path to self-destruction (or at least self-stagnation), I think you are wrong about nihilism being the problem of current western culture. Yes, you right - even without appealing to some "higher power" people can find meaning in their lives. But that's exactly what leads to the problem - some people are so desperate to find meaning for their lives, that they can set most rediculous goals, based on most twisted ideas of good and evil. Take for example intersectionality - some people start to believe that their sacred mission is to "protect miniorities from oppressive white straight men", and they are ready not only to do most horrible things but they actively silence anyone who question their way of thinking and thus undermines their self-validation.

He sets down characteristics of truly joyful people and shows how its the opposite of what one might think (hedonism) but instead it is in gratitude, fellowship, purposeful work, giving, awe, forgiveness, courage, stewardship, goodness (righteousness), and a few others - - but these are HARD! It seems counterproductive to give, work, and try hard things in order to gain joy. But he explains it (in his adorable Scottish accent) that the golden rule of joy is "pursue righteousness and you'll get happiness thrown in. Pursue happiness directly and you'll get neither righteousness nor happiness."

If you ever feel nihilistic, just know that something/someone from above put your consciousness behind your eyes. God loves you And no I don't mean Jesus or Buddha or Abraham. I'm not religious, I'm agnostic. There's a god that created life, that's what I believe, but I don't know if we human captured him/her with our text. Maybe it's the meaning of my life, to figure that out.

I appreciate that you have found meaning in your life. My best friend was an atheist and we had many wonderful conversations together. For me, I would not be able to find life's meaning in something that can be taken away from me, like work. Call me needy but I need life's meaning to extend beyond my small existence. It gives me comfort that there exists something larger, grander and more intelligent than myself. I don't believe that He controls everything - I am a believer in individual free agency. I guess my belief is the exact opposite of the nihilist - the nihilist believes that nothing matters, that nothing has meaning. I believe that everything has meaning and value - even the suffering we must endure here.

I think over thinking in general is the problem. Nihilism is primarily brought in by seeing death as a negative thing. Which it isn't. That's the first misconception. Death is just a transition process from this existence to the next. It has been described as peaceful, cathartic, and relaxing by people that have done it. True nihilism would be having to live forever without being able to die. Talk about nothing mattering when you are alive for a billion years. That would be miserable.

My counter to this, as a Christian, is this: you are seriously undervaluing human life to assume that we are not eternal beings. We are not meant for the finite. The neverending desire to grow, expand, learn, thrive, survive...all of that has to come from somewhere. You say you get your worth from your work, but what happens if you lose your hands? What if you get a brain embolism and find that you can't communicate as well as you used to? What happens if you start stagnating in quality and nobody appreciates your work like they once used to? These are realities that occur for everyone. They come for us all. But yet we still do have worth. We are timeless. Eternal. It is never enough for a healthy and functional human being to just climb the mountain and be content...there has to be more mountains, more obstacles traversed, more adversity overcome. You run out of mountains, you struggle. You perish. We need the infinite. From my perspective, God meets that infinite desire. He is infinite AND eternal. And He wants a relationship with us so we can enjoy that eternity and infinity with Him who is those things. You will lie on your deathbed with regret in your heart, however small. You will wish you could have pursued the one that got away, the lucrative job opportunity that you mishandled, the friendship burned in part due to the mistakes you made, even the smallest of choices like being kind to someone you know you weren't kind to or tasting a certain food. There is NEVER enough life for us, and it shouldn't be. Not until we are home. For me, I will lie on my deathbed with a peace not many others know...a peace that my real life is beginning as soon as I close my eyes and get on home.

Well, first of all, I think the fact that my life is finite actually makes me appreciate and value it all the more, and there are plenty of examples I could draw from religious history to showcase this point -- however, I'd also be the first to acknowledge that many atheists or anti-religious movements throughout history have been equally inhumane. But to your question about meaning in the face of adversity, the point I made in this video and have made elsewhere is that you have to find meaning in life. I think mostly this is done through cultivating a sense of gratitude and appreciation for all sorts of things. If I lose my hands, I will be sad for a while, but I will then find ways to do what I do without them. If nobody appreciates my work, I will hopefully remember the advice I've literally presented here many times on this series and get more creative and figure out how to make it more interesting to people again. If I get a brain embolism and can't communicate, I'm going to lean on my family and do what I can through them. There's no magic here. Part of living is accepting the risk of dying or eventually fading away. I accept that.

I liked the movie for the most part right up until the ending line where the mother says "nothing matters anyway." Which just collapses the entire movie right back to the start. Really disgusted me that they included that line when the entire film seemed to build up to refuting that statement. Sad to hear the show is coming to an end. This is one of my favorite series.

@@alexander6304 I do agree on most points personally I have never struggled to face the harsh reality that actually nothing matters, I doesn´t mean that you are given a free ride to do whatever you like as I strongly believe the bonds we form with our family, friends, and fellow humans is enough to understand empathy, and the better life that you can have, however there is a strong point that I can´t understand, if you are born you condemn to experience this really and obviously some people with be blessed in the life lottery with a fantastic life but others will be condemn to a horrible existence, why in any sane mind would you bring more people have gamble their life's in a game they didn´t chose to participate. Human evolution has the desire of reproduction and it is understandable that this happen in animals that aren´t self-aware but why in the world do when you have the awareness.hah

That is just her discovering optimistic nihilism, which is the entire philosophy of the movie at the end. It’s finding your own meaning even though you believe nothing matters. That is the true message of the movie: the war between optimism and pessimism, and how both can be nihilists, but only one can be happy.

You are the universe experiencing itself subjectively, the purpose of life is to expand and be able to better perceive the universe. One of the easiest ways to expand life is through symbiosis. But ya, I can see how man made books and whatnot could lead people to confusion about it. "An impossibly large and unfeeling universe" Indeed, that is why the universe created you, to feel. What more importance could you want? Why is it that curiosity is one of our strongest desires, it drives us to explore distant lands, and atomic structures. Also, huge shocker, we innately feel good when we create stuff, might be a clue to what the "purpose of life" is. All these conclusions can be drawn from simply stopping, sitting down, and just watching life, no books, no priests, no prophets. You are bound to witness a lot of death, tragedy, and adversity. However every creature will fight till its dying breathe to continue creating more life. Hell even cockroaches can breed after decapitation.

I was looking forward to this one. I actually came away thinking EEAAO was a nihilistic movie. It didn't really propose any alternative philosophy. It just said we can survive that reality by caring for each other. I struggle to believe that finding a subjective meaning within ourselves will ever be enough. There's a reason most people on earth find religion. Humans naturally "look up" to find purpose. I think that is very important whether it's because we're evolutionarily inclined to do so, or because there is in fact a higher power.

Ah - the movie said that there isn't a founding meaning, so it's up to each of us to construct one. Which people do find depressing, but only because they've been raised to think that there is and needs to be a 'meaning of life' as a hangover of having organised religion imposed on every aspect of life which _gave_ you a meaning of life to comply with. It's like being depressed that there's no 'meaning of work' now that there aren't any medieval trades guilds to slot you into. If instead you'd had primary school classes and cartoons that included aspects of making your own objectives and thinking what the consequences of those might be you'd now be emotionally ready for it as an adult.

  • @MrAwombat

    @MrAwombat

@@williamchamberlain2263 I can understand why some people think that way. However, the vast majority of people, despite how they are raised, have an intuition that objective truth and meaning exist. Maybe you would argue this, but I think objective meaning is inherently more satisfying and powerful than subjective meaning. I appreciate people who try to look on the bright side of life, but I don't think the EEAAO worldview will produce the type of world we want to see and it is ultimately empty.
