Cat cognitive science has come a long way over the past two decades. Research has been looking at cats and their behaviors for many years.
In this video, we will delve into feline science and tell you why cats make the stinky face, why they ignore you, and why they suddenly take off at 100 miles an hour or jump out at you.
Why cats suddenly take off at 100 miles an hour
Does your cat suddenly run around the house and then suddenly stop in their tracks?
Or perhaps they unexpectedly jump out at you, grab your ankles, or pounce on you while you're preparing dinner or simply petting them?
This behavior is often due to pent-up energy that suddenly overflows.
Cats are natural predators, and domestic cats retain this instinct to a certain extent. At times, they will feel the desire to hunt and practice their natural instincts.
If a cat isn't getting enough exercise during the day, they are more likely to display these sudden bursts of energy. Beware if you wear big, fuzzy slippers or socks that look conspicuously like small mammals, as this may encourage pouncing.
But remember, your cat may also jump out on you if they are stressed or agitated. For instance, when you're moving around, whether cleaning or making dinner, the cat may “attack” you because they are agitated or overstimulated by loud noises or sudden movements. Likewise, if you pet your cat for prolonged amount of time, they can become overstimulated, leading to sudden aggression.
Why cats persistently ask to go out and come back in again?
If you have an outdoor cat, you may have wondered why your cat wants to go out, and then a minute later is standing in front of the door and suddenly wants to come back in. Are our feline companions really that indecisive? No. This behavior actually has something to do with their territorial nature. Cats like to patrol their territory and regularly check whether everything is still in order and no intruders are hanging around in their area.
In the world of cats, there are simply no doors that constantly block the way and stake out their own territory.
And this is why many cats don’t like closed doors. If you have ever closed a door behind your cat, you probably know that a closed room is something that cats hate. Cats believe they actually own your house and they get confused when part of their territory is closed off to them.
Why Do Cats Make the “Stinky Face”?
Every once a while, you may notice your cat making a sneering face. The upper lip draws back, the nose wrinkles, and the mouth opens and remains a little open for some time. This phenomenon has a scientific name; It’s called the Flehman response. And this behavior isn’t limited to domestic cats. Many other mammals, including lions and horses perform this action too.
When a cat displays the Flehmen response, they’re basically analyzing a particular scent.
This response lets the scent travel along the roof of the mouth where a specialized sensory structure known as the vomeronasal organ is located.
Why cats ignore you
Your cat is sitting across the room, you look over to them, and you call their name and nothing happens. Your feelings get hurt and you wonder, does my cat even recognize my voice at all? A study conducted in 2013 at the University of Tokyo found that cats can recognize their owners’ voices. What’s more, cats can recognize their names-even when it is called by a stranger. Some felines will twitch their ears or tilt their head when they hear their name being called.
However, the study also found that only about 10 percent of those cats come when called. Cats do know your voice and their names but they don’t always feel the need to offer a response.
And, of course, this is why we find cats so appealing. It is the very nature and behavior of cats that makes them one of the most popular pets.
Why do cats guard you?
Although they are independent animals, cats form strong bonds with their human companions and consider them part of their social group. Just as they would protect their fellow feline family members, they extend the same protective instincts towards their human family. Keep in mind that cats are territorial animals, and they view their home environment and their owners as part of their territory. They feel a sense of responsibility for guarding and protecting their territory from perceived threats.
Cats display their protective nature in various ways, like sleeping with their humans. Cats are well aware that they, and their humans, are vulnerable when sleeping. Staying close-by is one way to stay safe should a predator launch a nighttime attack.
Furthermore, it is common for cats to follow their owners to the bathroom or around the house. While this behavior may stem from curiosity and a desire to be involved in their human's daily routines, it is also a way for cats to ensure their owner's safety and prevent any potential harm from occurring.

My cats will stare at me for long periods of time. I'll shrug my shoulders and say "What?" at which point they run to their bowls sitting and waiting like Snoopy! When the litter box is too stinky for their liking they'll stand outside the bathroom door and start meowing. If I don't move fast enough for their liking they'll run to me continually nagging until I move. Who's training who? 😅😅😅😂😂😂

She loves you and worships the ground that you walk upon. Plus she can't get over how absolutely beautiful she finds you.
I've always had cats that come when they're called. It's because I only call them when I'm going to have fun with them or feed them, so they always come on command. My friend didn't know I had a cat so I called her. She came running from the back of the house and leaped into my lap. They were amazed.
My cat doesn't acknowledge me when I say his name most likely because royalty doesn't need to respond to their servant. Basically, he thinks that he's too good for me. He might be right.

My sister’s cat has never responded to its name but mine respond every time I say their names. I don’t know if it’s because i had all my cats from babyhood and my sister adopted hers from a shelter as an adult. Maybe her cat had another name before adoption. Did you adopt your cat?
I used to have a big orange tomcat named Tom. After he would take a dump in his litter pail, he always felt the need to tell me about it. He would search me out and say an enthusiastic meow at me after every dump!

Haha my cat is very talkative. She always comes when called and she'll even hold a whole conversation if you humor her.
My cat blinks at me all the time and I was wondering what that meant and now that they have said it and I am really happy about that!

3:52 No, they’re popular because they’re low maintenance. You just have to put out a litter box and food, and they’ll occasionally say hi. Dogs want to be with you and play with you and want you to show them affection as much as they want to show you affection. Cats don’t care if you like them or not.

My cat Cheech Marin and her bro TommyChong always stare at me. And yes. I’m the dang door keeper. I’m always telling them I wish I had a 100$ for every time I have to get up. All mine are rescued from newborns. They are so possessive over me.

My cat ignored me when I called her name and my girl thought she didn’t know her name I said she did she’s just ignoring us she didn’t believe me called my cats name 10 more times then my cat turned looked at her mad real quick and looked back out the window I was laughing so hard

One of my old cats who passed away after his 18th birthday once took off full speed down the hall and ran face first into a glass cabinet that had fragile brickabrack. It was hilarious

This is my first time seeing your video and it gave me a wealth of information. I grew up with cats and dogs but they were both inside and outside pets. I am considering having a Ragdoll cat but I have a smaller apartment with antique upholstery that I inherited. I don't really have a place for a cat tree and I know it is considered by many cruel to have a kitten declawed. What options do you recommend to teach a cat not to claw furniture or the many upholstered items: chairs, sofas, skirted tables, etc. that I have?

My cat used a small throw rug that’s only for him. He sharpens his claws on it, plays with toys on it and sometimes sleeps on it. Declawing cats is illegal in my state.

Wow thank you for sharing this amazing video I learned so much my cat is very vocal, and I give him too much attention he follows me everywhere, he is a very picky eater and does not like beef only seafood. And steals my dog's food so I have to supervise him to prevent any illness. I take him to a vet he ja aggressive but not with me, I wish he was friendly too. others, he is very territorial and doesn't let anyone come near me. I tried many times to teach him to relax by giving treats to my husband to give him and he won't eat them endless, I am the one giving him the food. He is a rescue like my husky thank God they love each other, but if I give love to my dog my cat gets in between. Wish I know why his behaviour is so attached to me. I am careful with visitors as he gets frisky. But he loves belly rubs only from me. 😆😸
My cat will come up to me while I'm watching tv and her eyes are fixed on me.. I reach over to her and pet her and rub around her face.. She will plop down on her back and I know she wants me to pet her tummy so she can bite and scratch me.. My boy has developed a new habit. He’s next to me when I call in to pay my bills. I can be with both all day but my girl or boy pounds on my bedroom door for night cuddle then they go downstairs for bed. I wake up open my door my two are right there, get their morning kiss and we all stampede to the kitchen for breakfast. And my boy marks me when I put his bowl down. My past cats never did.

@@9Achaemenid I found her in some bushes at the side of the street when she was 3 weeks old two years ago. She wakes me at 4.00 every morning and follows me to the bathroom and toilet and stays with me until I feed her.
