I grew up in Welch, McDowell County. I lived there in the 60's - 70's. It was booming and a great place to live. We had a theatre, swimming pool, skating rink, bowling alley, Watsons, Murphy's, football games, Sterling and West Virginia drive-in and a lot more. I had a wonderful childhood there. A lot of good memories.

Wow... randomly ran across this video. Mr. Montgomery was one of my Jr. High school teachers at Northfork. I remember we had to recite the Preamble in his class. This was back in 1986-88 timeframe.

Why get out we need people here the children are the leaders of tomorrow. West Virginia is a beautiful state and I wouldn’t live anywhere else. We get negative reviews about all of our state not just McDowell county. McDowell and other southern West Virginia coal producing counties was robbed of its natural resources then left to die along with the miners and their families …whilst all the riches from the coal went to other states.

@@danbailey96 Because if kids stay they have far less opportunities. I left and made triple the money I would have in WV. Then I came back to enjoy all the beauty WV has to offer. If you have enough money to enjoy it and not have to work yourself into an early grave. 😉

Our country needs to practice what it preaches... Are we a rich capitalistic country, supporting free enterprise and the people that go with it.. or just pretenders? Ask someone from southern West Virginia and you'll probably get an honest answer.... What could the cost on one aircraft carrier... do for places like McDowell, Logan and Mingo Counties.

lol...she lost and never had any control over coal mines hon. No one's using coal very much. My town in Missouri (I was born in Welch)is completely coal free now. We have acres of solar panels and wind machines. Our electricity is free once these initial investment is recouped. Coal is old school and dirty for our planet. You have to change with the times. I was reading that people in WV are now doing....BEES....and selling huge amounts of honey. Great idea.
