@@20gamesboard it is very common to lowball stuff, particularly on all-or-nothing funding platforms like Kickstarter, where speed to fund and exceeding goals helps feed their algorithm. I don't know if it's as common on the smaller platforms. That said, $800k is nothing to sneeze at.

@20gamesboard Matt has addressed that strategy before. If I remember correctly, MCDM doesn't do it because if they "fund" the amount listed but not the amount they actually need then they go bankrupt because they are still on the hook for a product.

As one of the testers for this game, I've already run it several times and instead of telling you what I think, I'll just tell you what some people from my gaming group said. Non-testers, most of these people barely knows MCDM or Matt Colville exist, this is what they thought about the game. "It felt like everyone got to do something cool on their turn. I always felt like I had interesting choices to make." "If I were starting a new campaign tomorrow, I'd use these rules instead of 5e. Even without the polish." "Always getting to do damage and never having a useless turn feels AMAZING!" "I felt like an epic hero the whole time!" This is just what some normal players thought. I'm not a shill though, the game is NOT ready, there was a ton of negative feedback too. But that's why we test, that's why MCDM isn't promising a game NOW. All the stuff that's cool and fun is staying, all the stuff that doesn't work and is broken and weird? Almost all of that is probably gonna change! If you're like me and most of my friends and just burned out by 5e or even just wanted to do something different, I'd STRONGLY recommend following this game's development. Maybe you can't back and that's fine, but keep an eye on it. I think this is going to be a VERY fun game to be fantasy, monster-fighting heroes in.

I remember hearing Matt talk about Tolkien's idea that the world is a "pale echo" of what it once was. Hearing him now rally at the end of this video -- to say that this hobby can be better, can improve on what it is and once was -- felt like a much-needed bit of hope. That's when I decided to back. I know MCDM met their funding goals and then some, but I hope -- I believe -- they can do it.

Mr. Colville! Came into a bit of extra cash and I just bought a copy of Flee Mortals! And my god is it one of the best pieces of TTRP content I've ever seen. I've spent the last 1.5 hours or so thumbing through the pdf, and it's amazing. The monsters themselves are fun and interesting. The artwork is incredible. There's a wide variety in every sense of the word. But not only that: the book, as a resource, is perfection. There's an easy to browse table listing monsters by CR. There's an easy to understand "role" system that instantly conveys the type of things a creature does in combat. There's simple guidelines for reskinning monsters of one type to another. Worth every penny. A couple of these bad boys are going in next session for sure. All that to say: Congrats on the massive success of your crowd funding campaign (nearing 3mil as I write!). I'm really looking forward to it. Everyone over there at MCDM is doing fabulous work and I'm excited to get my hands on this next project once its finished.

One of the things that I think is interesting is that these roles tap into a certain type of play experience more than they lock someone into a specific "class". I would LOVE to see a troubadour placing "tensions" on people/monsters, for players they act as debuffs and for monsters they're buffs. But then, when the encounter requires it, he can trigger the "resolutions", changing the debuffs in high buffs for players or dealing high damage on monsters. It would be a HUGE source of cinematic drama.

I like the Motivations and Pitfalls framework for negotiating with NPCs. Back when I played a lot of 3E (& 5E) D&D, I saw a lot of players treat social rolls as, like, mind control. "I just need to roll good enough and the NPC will do whatever I want." It was so bad the attitude bled into other games I tried to run with those groups (imagine me, trying to explain to a stubborn player that they can't make a demon act against its nature in Blades in the Dark).

The first thing that came to mind when you described the victories vs heals dynamic and the building class resource was a great way to build the all wild shape no spells druid from the movie. The Skin Walker:... might need a different name. You get a bunch of creature stat blocks. Mostly beasts, but each subclass would open up access to another creature type. Not the whole monster book, but more than your level or whatever number in the game is analogous to your proficiency bonus or main stat modifier. You can wild shape, or whatever the shape changing gets renamed to, once each turn. At the start of your adventuring day you only have access to the lowest CR tier, or whatever tier system ends up being used for organizing the monster in the game. Each time your class resource or victory pools grow you unlock access to the next tier of creature shapes you can change into. When you stop and your resources reset you go back to only shifting into the lowest tier/CR. Other class features gained through leveling could be scaling how many attacks or multiattacks you can do in any form. Setting one or two low tier forms as defaults you can always shift to or from once a turn separate from your one higher tier shift each turn. The ability to summon multiple creatures of the form you've taken. Making Shadow Clones of your creature forms. All kinds of things. One cool social encounter gimmick that could be added to this class is Shape Shifter duels. Think the Wizard's Duel from Sword In the Stone, or the "I Am" contest from Sandman. Not full combat duels. More of a quick food chain escalation minigame.

Honestly, very appreciative of being open about actually paying your employees. It’s so ridiculous how game companies just don’t disclose that- and it’s probably because, well, you know.. either way, thank you for making that clear

Would love for the VTT to have "in the requirements" that it could also be used locally to provide a battle map for in-house gaming on a horizontal TV. "Play remote, in-person, hybrid, OK"

The Fury sounds like a combination of Fantasy Florida Man and the "Local Man Literally Too Angry To Die!" meme. Everything else... well I hope you had plans for future supplements because over 200% sounds like a strong demand to me.

I have not yet finished this video - I would, but I must rest tonight - but I felt I needed to say that this fills me with hope specifically as a person trying to create their own ttrpgs…. Yeah, you read that right. I am working on four, all on my own, as of now. Bit silly, I know, but they’re my passion projects. I’m not sure I can finish them alone, though; I think I can make the core rules, but the art, production, publishing, marketing - all that stuff feels beyond me. I’m hoping I can find a team to help in the long run, and seeing you, as well as learning about others who’ve made ttrpgs before, big or small, is inspiring. I feel like an aspiring craftsman, trying to make a work of art, and am so delighted to see the many works others have made before. Saying that, I should add that, yeah, this sounds like a work of art too. I know, I haven’t finished the video yet, but I will in the mroning and if I change my mind I’ll edit this then. As it stands though, I hope this project succeeds. It sounds like a very fun ttrpg. Hopefully, my little projects can one day be embraced and enjoyed as well Edit: Well, it took a little longer than I anticipated but I’ve officially finished the video and can say wholeheartedly that I remain inspired and hopeful. I don’t know where to start myself but I think I’ll do a small part in supporting this project

Backed the Ajax version before watching. I'll be back after morning meetings. Hold that thought, Matt! Like I've said before, I believe in MCDM's and Matt's visions, and the track record continues to be good; flee, mortals was a real wake up call and I hope this is...a wake up...explosion? :)

THANK YOU for being upfront (repeatedly) about the uncertainty involved in a crowdfunding campaign and especially the stretch goals. If the Double Fine documentaries have taught me anything, it’s that crowdfunding can be a Faustian bargain-especially when it’s not sufficiently communicated that crowdfunding buys the person-hours it takes to make a product, NOT the finished product itself, and that you can’t know how development will shake out months or years down the line.

TL:DR: Easier to schedule half evening play from home, instead of whole evening sessions at a localtion where you can't help at home. An advantage of using a VTT with people in the same town or city is scheduling a play session. You can do it on a weekday after dinner and putting small children to bed, instead of going directly to someones home, have dinner there while chatting for an hour or so before you start. VTT start is 15-30 minutes of chatting, living room start is usually 1-2 hours also you have to include going home time, both if groups I'm in are anything to go after.

My own gaming has moved far from this sort of game in many ways to really simple rpg content like Cairn or Knave and narrative Skirmish games like Frostgrave when I feel like playing something more tactical. But I will always back MCDM products. Partly its because I really enjoy the books as objects. But also it's because I will always be grateful to Matt for his running the game videos that got me running my first games. My first ever D&D session as a GM was in the Delian Tomb. I'll always be thankful for it. Much love, MCDM.
