Matthew Williams is one the most popular designers to emerge in the past few years, and in this episode of Threaducation we will take a look at how that happened. All things considered, it’s a pretty crazy story. He started off woking for a brand in Los Angeles, began working with with Kanye West, started dating Lady Gaga, eventually joined Kanye’s creative agency DONDA, founded Been Trill alongside Virgil Abloh, Heron, Preston, and Justin Saunders, then eventually left that to found Alyx. After a few years of proving himself at Alyx he became the creative director of Givenchy. We’ll break down each step along the way along with some surprising facts and theories. This is the Matthew Williams story.

The more and more I watch these videos I understand that most of these success stories are nothing more than connections and people being in the right place at the right time. And many are 6 degrees of separation in terms of familiar circles. There are so many talented people in the world who never hit those connections, but to be fair, you also have to network and be more than regional

It was his gf who introduced him to fashion, she was a knitwear designer and sadly I forgot her name, but you can see how his style and interest changed after she took him to PFW for the first time.
He really supports younger generation and the rap industry hard hard i love that
I had no idea who Mathew Williams is, but after seeing this; it’s amazing how everything is connected in the fashion industry.. as a casual, I only see the surface, but seeing the roots of many popular brands? It’s actually not as complex, as I once thought, it’s more organic.. it’s ppl who have a vision, and the environment around that vision that makes it all rise- and, at times the reason why it falls too. At its core, it’s just a person who decided to be free with their expressions, and using their influences to make something so eye catching & unique. Another amazing video, man.. as always. Seriously. You haven’t had one bad video, or even mediocre, they’ve all been insane quality.

I feel like everyone’s stories are always the same in a sense , excluding matthew, they start off nobody then they randomly coincidentally meet someone that will "change their life forever". Life really is about who you know and being in the right place at the right time .

In the early 2010's Williams was also affiliated with stussy a lot since he did quite a few direction and styling gigs for the lookbooks, which is probably how they managed to get the stussy collab.

If i remember correctly the timeline regarding alyx is a bit different. I think while the brand was doing okay, he needed an investor and thats when Luca stepped in and they moved the entire studio to Slamjams headquarters near modena and changed the name from alyx studios to 1017 alyx

What's also important regarding his love life is that around the time he started working for Givenchy, him and Jennifer separated. I do not think they are on good terms and I do believe its made a huge impact on Williams as an industry professional.
