Back in 1977 I had just gotten out of the Marines and I was working at the 7-11 store in Daytona Beach Shores Florida down the road from Gregg Allman's Mom. The guys from Marshall Tucker used to hang out around there with Gregg Allman. The Marshall Tucker Band was a bunch of really nice guys. They'd come into the store and stay and talk to me for awhile. One of them even came in once to apologize for Gregg Allman's drunken rage in the store the night before.

My dad died in July so it's been a rough six months. I randomly listened to this song then sent it to my mom and three brothers the other night and said "this reminds me of Dad." Turns out my mom was in a bar and this song was playing at the same time. And before hearing about it, my aunt woke in the middle of the night and randomly listened to it. In case anyone wants the lyrics. Took my family away from our Carolina home Had dreams about the west and started to roam Six long months on a dust covered trail They say heaven's at the end But so far it's been hell And there's fire on the mountain Lightening in the air Gold in them hills and it's waiting for me there We were digging and shifting from five to five Selling everything we found just to stay alive Gold flowed free like the whiskey in the bars Sinning was the big thin Lord And Satan was the star And there's fire on the mountain Lightening in the air Gold in them hills and it's waiting for me there Dance hall girls were the evening treat Empty cartridges and blood lined the gutters of the street Men were shot down for the sake of fun Or just to hear the noise of their 44 guns And there's fire on the mountain Lightening in the air Gold in them hills and it's waiting for me there Now my widow, she weeps by my grave Tears flow free for her man she couldn't save Shot down in cold blood by a gun that carried fame All for a useless and no good worthless claim And there's fire on the mountain Lightening in the air Gold in them hills and it's waiting for me there Fire on the mountain Lightening in the air Gold in them hills and it's waiting for me there Waiting for me there

What a joy it must be to know you've seen real music performed by real musicians, lucky bastard
This song has a special meaning for me because my 3rd great grandfather left his Carolina home headed west to the gold fields of Oregon where he and his son struck it rich. His obituary published in the: The Burtonian Newspaper, Burt County, Nebraska, Thursday, June 19, 1879. ABNER WILEY Died, on Monday, March 10th, 1879, at the residence of his son in this county, Abner Wiley, in the 90th year of his age. Born in Guilford county, North Carolina, where his early manhood was spent, he moved thence to Indiana in 1831. Ten years afterward he journeyed to Jefferson county, this State, and there he made his home till 1850, when he went with his son, A. S. Wiley, who joined the army of gold-seekers and spent three years amid the mountain miners of Oregon. Returning at the end of that time, he has since dwelt with his children. Long indeed has been his journey. Since it was commenced all of the great battles of Napoleon have been fought. He was quite a lad when Washington passed away. He was a voter before the keel of a steamer rippled the American waters. The telegraph found him midway on his life's voyage. He was a soldier in the war of 1812. But his journey is ended, he has gone over to the other shore of the Great River and is now reunited with the loved and lost who have gone on before. - Burt County, (Neb.) Burtonian

Wow! Great heritage. Love that
Just seen them at Carnegie Music Hall south side of Pittsburgh. I just turned 64 and the last time I seen them was 1977. What great music they created in their songs. It’s here for ever! Thanks for the talent and the memories.
Took my fam'ly away from our Carolina home Had dreams about the west and started to roam Six long months on a dust covered trail They say heaven's at the end But so far it's been hell And there's fire on the mountain Lightening in the air Gold in them hills and it's waiting for me there We were digging and shifting from five to five Selling ev'rything we found just to stay alive Gold flowed free like the whiskey in the bars Sinning was the big thin Lord And satan was the star And there's fire on the mountain Lightening in the air Gold in them hills and it's waiting for me there Dance hall girls were the evening treat Empty cartridges and blood lined the gutters of the street Men were shot down for the sake of fun Or just to hear the noise of their 44 guns And there's fire on the mountain Lightening in the air Gold in them hills and it's waiting for me there Now my widow, she weeps by my grave Tears flow free for her man she couldn't save Shot down in cold blood by a gun that carried fame All for a useless and no good worthless claim And there's fire on the mountain Lightening in the air Gold in them hills and it's waiting for me there

These guys recorded at Capricorn in Macon GA. We did work on their equipment in the 70's along with most of the other "Capricorn Bands" like Charlie Daniels, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Wet Willie, Sea Leavel (Chuck Leavel), Allman Brothers and a couple of dozen I can't recall now. We were located in Decatur, GA and got a large amount of the equipment work in the South East. We were just in the right place at the right time. The 70's were really a good time to be in the music business.

Marshall Tucker were a big southern rock group during the 70’s🎶
I've said it before, MTB was like Bob Will and the Texas Playboys. They couldn't be put in a category by the music industry, therefor they never got the support by radio they should have had. Superior musicianship, singing, arrangement, and writing were a hallmark of both bands
