The Mars Volta - Things Behind the Sun

Please beware of them that stare
They'll only smile to see you while
Your time away
And once you've seen what they have been
To win the earth just won't seem worth
Your night or your day
Who'll hear what I say.
Look around you find the ground
Is not so far from where you are
But not too wise
For down below they never grow
They're always tired and charms are hired
From out of their eyes
Never surprise.
Take your time and you'll be fine
And say a prayer for people there
Who live on the floor
And if you see what's meant to be
Don't name the day or try to say
It happened before.
Don't be shy you learn to fly
And see the sun when day is done
If only you see
Just what you are beneath a star
That came to stay one rainy day
In autumn for free
Yes, be what you'll be.
Please beware of them that stare
They'll only smile to see you while
Your time away
And once you've seen what they have been
To win the earth just won't seem worth
Your night or your day
Who'll hear what I say.
Open up the broken cup
Let goodly sin and sunshine in
Yes that's today.
And open wide the hymns you hide
You find reknown while people frown
At things that you say
But say what you'll say
About the farmers and the fun
And the things behind the sun
And the people round your head
Who say everything's been said
And the movement in your brain
Sends you out into the rain.

This was how I found out about Nick Drake, and i'll be eternally grateful to Mars Volta for introducing me to him.

I knew all Nick Drake's songs before discovering this cover by The Mars Volta, featuring John Frusciante on acoustic guitar. I usually dislike Nick Drake's covers but this one is great, respecting the original mood and style and adding some ethereal singing and effects. Great cover!

This version is so strange-beautiful. They found a way to remain original even as they, basically, do the same song, same guitar . This one grows on me slowly..

For those that not like the “radio frequency” this represent the darkness behind the normal voice, like things behind the sun.

It may be, doesn't mean I enjoy it But then I don't have to enjoy it to like it But this, neh There may be more symbolism in terms of sound, but I don't think that necessarily enhances it

Some of us just know his voice man but you go right ahead relating everything about him back to his drug abuse in the 1990s if that makes you feel better. Nearly got through one small comment section without someone feeling the need to bring that up but no.

I just looked up lyrics to Things Behind The Sun so I could practice it for a cover I'm planning to do of the entire Pink Moon album in one take, and stumbled across the Mars Volta lyrics, so now I'm here. Not quite the same feeling as Nick, they voltafied it, but it's still eerily haunting. And frusciante played acoustic on this?? Crazy, how someone with such little music inspired some of the greatest musicians we know today

Where does anyone find time in their life to hate The Mars Volta? Forget personal taste and everything, the fact is they are probably the greatest band on the planet right now. Every album is completely different to the others, and every album is a 9/10 at least. Love this song, love this version, still love Nick Drake. Open your eyes.

I think this is a good cover considering that they decided to stay in time. The original is good but Nick didn't sing in rhythm at all. He's like literally behind the whole time.

I love creative re-imaginings of good songs. My personal distaste for the Mars Volta aside, I just found this cover very, very dull. I can admit that they're a group of talented fellows that are more than competent with their instruments and that is actually what irks me more about this performance. Whoever the guitar player is didn't seem to spend any time trying to actually learn how it's played. It's not "creative" to do it wrong. It's just lazy.
