The Manda: Croatia's Minimalist .50 BMG

All the best firearms history channels streaming to all major devices:
weaponsandwar.tv
The Manda is a rifle that was designed for the Croatian Special Police at the beginning of the Homeland War in 1991. At that point, the Special Police (basically the SWAT teams) were basically the only really well-trained fighters in the country with combat experience. They wanted .50 BMG anti-material rifles for the war that was breaking out, and the Croatian Ministry of the Interior developed and produced the Manda for them.
Specifically, the rifle was designed by engineer Petar Vucetic (and named after his sister). Mechanically, it is a very simple rifle, with two large locking lugs, a tubular stock, M70 AK pistol grip, and a barrel made form a turned-down Browning M2 bolt with a large muzzle brake. A total of 84 were made, fitted with Leupold scopes and mounts with integrated BDC cams for use from 300 out to 1000 meters.

@@budwyzer77Minimalist does not refer to how thick or heavy something is, it refers to a very simple design. You could make something thick and robust or thin and light and still have something that is minimalist in design. There is a small number of parts and the parts themselves are very simple in design. That's what makes this rifle a minimalist design. You have to use very thick metal to make a 50 BMG that doesn't blow up. Also not machining anything off of the parts that wasn't necessary gives the rifle a minimalist look. That will also add some weight.

Yugoslavia had the third largest army in Europe at the time of its breakup. It was controlled by the Serbs because the capital of YU was Belgrade. Can you imagine being in war against the third largest army in Europe and having only the police force to defend yourself!? People were going into trenches with hunting rifles. It took courage on another level, but we were defending our homes and were as one. Something similar can still be seen in Croatian sports.

I have about 10 minutes for watching something. Netflix has very little that short, but a video like this on a topic I enjoy is very welcome into that time slot. You always do a great job with your content and placing the weapon in its historical context.

Mauser used both methods in different versions of their rifles, both the cock on open and the cock on close, and there has been a lot of others. So there are a lot of possibilities here. The Mosin Nagant is one possibility but without talking to the designer it's hard to know where he found the inspiration.

I love the simplicity and minimalist look. I think once you got set up, it wouldn't be that expensive to mass produce. You would definitely want to test every single bolt with magnetic particle inspection and use really good steel and heat treatment. There's no margen for error on something chambered in 50 BMG. I wonder how many shots those bolt lugs will safely hold up for.
