The Man That Redefined MIDI-Programmable Rigs

Музыка

Today, we're sitting down with Ron Menelli, the founder and owner of RJM, our go-to name when it comes to MIDI switchers. We'll dive deep into the beginnings of RJM and talk about how they became the leading manufacturer of MIDI switchers!
More about RJM:
RJM Music Technology, Inc. was founded in 2003 by Ron Menelli. Ron started playing guitar in 7th grade and only months later built his first effect pedal. After getting degrees in Computer Engineering and Computer Science and then spending several years in the corporate jungle, he decided to go off on his own and start RJM Music.

    I have the third RG-16, Ron hand signed it himself. He told me that Paul Jackson Jr got the first one, and Dave Weiner got the second. Works great, does so much. Ron is a great guy, super cool to talk to, and when we talked the RG-16 didn't exist, but three weeks later he worked it out and had a new unit. Great video find for me! Discovered Vertex via Rhett Schull and have been watching all your videos. A few months back I discovered RJM while doing deep research and it moved to the top of my list. What I want is a system where I can break an entire show down by songs/parts and just switch through them all like using a sequential shift transmission: Forward (and backwards in case of a mistake). This way I can write the entire show, part by part and not have to dance around. Then, I still want the option to dance around for off-the-cuff encore jams. I live in Portland, Oregon for the past 15 years, after growing up in Marin County, CA. So, finding someone relatively near to build a specific system designed by/for me seems a lot closer now. I have been developing my system for years now (more than a decade actually), and finally the pieces of the puzzle have become realities. The Mastermind GT/22 in a Schmidt Array SA900 board with Strymon and various other midi pedals; plus wah, volume, and expression pedals and a Uni-vibe in a second, smaller Schmidt Array SA 350XDM. It's a pretty complex system designed to make it all extremely easy for me. I've been researching buffers as this system will be a wet/dry/wet system. The one thing that is still missing is AOIP (Audio Over Internet Protocols) so the cabling from the front of the stage to the back line racks can be flat-cable ethernet. I figure that's the next development. Like I said, this is a very complex system.

    @@MrDavemiley I know that there is now a threshold that adjust the delay before the audio signal comes in when switched. I think the earlier versions and software didn't have this control. All of the switchers will have "POPS" because of how the switching is done. They just circumvent it by creating a delay in the audio signal so it discharges before the signal comes on. The drawback is you have a little less immediacy when switching over.

  • @VertexEffectsInc

    @VertexEffectsInc

    2 жыл бұрын

    You can make a good buffer out of a lot of different design archetypes, including BJT. It's just way cheaper to make a buffer using BJT's or JFET's that doing it with OPA's if you're going for budget. Boss, I suspect uses BJT's and FET buffers separately for input and output buffers on all their pedals because it was the cheapest they could make what they considered to be a good sounding buffer at the time, although they haven't evolved much since the 1980's even though they could make them much more neutral and transparent now for not too much more money. I think their style of buffers have become synonymous with their products so it's too late to change. I think if the goal is "neutral" it's easiest to get there with opamps and I think the results are most quiet, efficient, and represent the original tone best. There are other ways to get there as well, but this is my preference.

    How does the RJM compare with its competitors? GigRig or Musicom or Boss?

  • @VertexEffectsInc

    @VertexEffectsInc

    3 жыл бұрын

    I think of RJM as the the top if you're giving an honest appraisal of build quality, versus features, versus design versus software. I think that the Gig Rig and MusicomLab are also great units, and have benefits as well depending on what you're looking for. For example, the MusicomLab I think has the best buffers in it and isolated outputs on the smaller and larger units which the smaller RJM's don't have. I think the Boss has the most features for the money and is the best value. I think the GigRig one is good for beginners to MIDI that don't need a lot of features but want to have that ability in their rigs for programming but don't want to sit with a manual for weeks to learn the product.

    The Mastermind PBC/6X and the upcoming Mini Effect Gizmo X can change loop order. The signal is never converted to digital. Our other switchers have fixed loop order.

    Our switchers are much more versatile. You can configure the buttons any way you'd like. You can set up multiple button pages to match your workflow. We have much more extensive MIDI support. We can send any types of MIDI messages from any button and can send potentially hundreds of messages per button. We also support MIDI clock. Supporting all of this is our Mac/PC editor which allows you to set things up quickly and easily. Also if you use Stereo pedals you only need 1 loop for a stereo pedal whereas on the G3 you need 2. The PBC/6X has 3 mono and 4 stereo loops but they can be reconfigured to be 11 mono loops. The PBC/10 has 6 mono loops and 4 stereo. You can add a Mini Effect Gizmo to extend that by 6 stereo loops (New Mini Effect Gizmo coming out soon). If you are in the US the PBC/6X and PBC/10 are significantly less expensive than the respective G3 models. (And we have a Black Friday sale going on right now shop.rjmmusic.com) The PBC/6X and PBC/10 are both made in the US. Hope that helps you! We appreciate that you are considering our products!

    Koen, how can you say this without having done the comparison? I think the G2/G3 have their assets - I don't think they are better than the RJM having done the comparisons (not of the G3 yet) but of the G2. I think there are benefits of each, but sonically, you'd have to have done a direct A/B of the switchers, their buffers, etc. Did you actually do this? Does a "BIG NAME" mean that it's good? Do you know how many "Big Names" are using RJM?
